Ah yes, quotes regarding the heart. My favorite:

"Beans, Beans, good for the heart/beans, beans, great for the heart!"

-somebody on SNL

Back to the show, the opener was pretty good. I'm just not a big Yes fan. I do have 90215 or whatever the title is, so it's probably gonna be AOTW one day. Also, not a big Linda Ronstadt fan.

But I dig Elvis. I still say he has the best, most soothing voice ever, even in the history of the whole wide world. I also like Randy Meisner, so that was a nice pick. But not the Golden Pell.

I'm giving the GP to The Beach Boys and The Four Freshman. Very nice track. I like the BB's version just slightly over the other, but really only because I know their voices. However, I had to listen twice, as I missed what you were saying at the beginning of the song, and I didn't realize it had changed from one artist to the next.

Unc,
So I remembered correctly about that Milsap song.
I don't know if he has great taste anymore, but my brother knew a DJ when we had a Country station and would go to the station and he would sit with the guy, or call in and request songs.
Now, no more Country station!
I know Hank Williams music pretty well, Charlie Pride much less so, but I am familiar with “Kaw-Liga”.
However it always comes as a surprise when I see the odd title...I have to play it to recall what it is, lol!
I just have a mental block with that song!
Good version by Ronnie, not the best quality live though.
Thanks again for the videos, I wouldn't have found them, lol,
Mike

Lost In The 50’s Tonight was his, Mike. Big ol' hit for Milsap. Your mother's son, the brother Father has great taste in music. Ronnie Milsap had his very own style that just didn't fit in a neat country package. Although I'd say it was country music almost in the Nashville Strings mode his style and vocal range won the listeners hearts and respect. His cover of Hank Williams "Kaw-Liga" is a favorite of mine.

Unc,
Good song that “Smokey Mountain Rain”, and I don't limit myself to Rock, I'd play it.
The second clip is very funny, although I was distracted by whatever language that was, lol!
And Don Gibson is one of my favorites...always loved Oh Lonesome Me.
My brother the Priest loves Country music (I have his albums), and Ronnie Milsap in particular.
He was the one who told me was blind, I never knew.
So I got into his music a bit through my brother.
Doesn't he do a song called Lost In The 50's Tonight?
I've always wanted to play that on the show!
Thanks, and good to see Ron & Nancy again, things sure were better then,
Mike

RJ,
I thought you would like this better.
I was working through that sadness of Pete Fornatale, and going along by the 2nd half getting myself lost in the music, sometimes all else fades away
And I really am going through things looking for a way to honor him.
The way it appears, you won't believe what you will hear- although not having grown up with him it may not matter as much.
I like and love, in that order, Too Much Rain by McCartney and Rainy Night House by Joni Mitchell.
Figured you and others would have heard those two, The Fortunes & Carpenters (still shocked I played the Carpenters, lol!), I don't want to be too obscure all the time.
I keep telling people, in the beginning of those free-form FM days, the Bee Gees were considered Progressive Rock.
They did some amazing stuff, really great songs, and that was just one of them- not even a hit single, but an album track that was played a lot by Scott Muni.
Years later, with the dislike between us Rockers and the Disco people, they really did themselves a disservice and forever tainted their reputations by moving into Saturday Night Fever and Disco.
But their career was in decline, so financially for them it was a great move.
However I'll always remember that early stuff, and play it when I get the chance- and some of it will be this Summer!
So, the Golden Pell goes to The Bee Gees- think I would have made the same choice!
A truly great song to end that long series with...I felt.
Offhand, I don't know Sometimes The Rain Won't Let Me Sleep by The Oak Ridge Boys.
It's impossible to hear everything, but I try, lol!
And that sure is a nice thing, to make somebody remember a song I didn't even play...WOW!
But that proves how you get it- I may have helped you think of it, but you are a Thinking Man.
To me, that's the perfect listener!
Thanks for that listen, writing, and pull out that vinyl, lol,
Mike

No problem, Mike. Not strictly rock but another great Rain song was Ronnie Milsap's "Smokey Mountain Rain".

Love this YT comment below...
<strong>"Ronnie Milsap is third in #1 hits to George Strait and Conway Twitty, and not in the Country Music Hall of Fame? What's with that?"</strong>

...and here he is with Ray Charles.
Check out the laughing Ronald Reagan and Nancy.
<em>Hey, America was great then!!</em>

RJ,
Thank you my brother in rock, lol!
Nice expression there, I dig it.
My second CCR tune in the series and Fogerty's vocals always seem great to me.
That Four Seasons one is a forgotten gem, and a decent contender for the Golden Pell.
It is correctly Baby, The Rain Must Fall, but two n's in Glenn, and I too think it is the most worthy recipient for the Golden Pell.
What was probably lost was my subtlety in choosing that to open the show.
In the lyrics there is that independence of "Wherever my heart leads me, baby, I must go, baby I must go".
And "I don't know now what waits for me, maybe Heaven, maybe Hell", both references to the life, then death, of that now gone DJ, Pete Fornatale.
Honestly, I do remember Driving My Life Away by Eddie Rabbit, that's a good one.
But the song I should definitely have thought of is his I Love A Rainy Night.
I have shamed myself and my family, if I were samurai I would have to kill myself, lol!
Great call by Mike Mills!
Here's a little secret- I refuse to use Google or anything else to find and list songs on a particular topic.
I steadfastly prefer to think of them myself, keep it real and organic!
If I had Googled I am sure Eddie's song would have popped up...actually I'm not sure since I've never tried it, lol!
So what we have here is, if I don't think of a song (and no one comes up with a suggestion I can use), it doesn't get played.
We use computers too much, makes us lazy.
I prefer to be human, lol!
Don't you agree?
Thanks for listening and writing my brother in Rock (still liking that!),

Alright DJ Mike, I liked this one a bit better than the last one. Not that the last one was bad, I just liked this a bit better.

Too Much Rain by McCartney and Rainy Night House by Joni Mitchell were good tunes that I've never heard before, so great choices there.

I've heard Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again many times as well as Rainy Days And Mondays by The Carpenters. Both good songs.

I had a hard time deciding who to award the Golden Pell to. On one hand was The Grateful Dead's A Box Of Rain, and the other hand holds And The Sun Will Shine by The Bee Gees. I just couldn't quite place that it was the Bee Gees. Those guys have written some really great songs over the years, and this is one I've never heard. So I've made my choice, Golden Pell goes to The Bee Gees. Marvelous song bro.

And I just thought of one more rain song that is near and dear to me, but I don't have a copy of it right now. I used to own the cassette tape but it's long since disappeared. It's Sometimes The Rain Won't Let Me Sleep by The Oak Ridge Boys. It's off of an album called The Oak Ridge Boys Have Arrived, and that is a fantastic album. I actually have the vinly, but haven't tried to transfer it to mp3 yet. I'll get around to it one day, but the point is that your show has helped me remember that song. So thanks go to you.

Not a bad show at all my brother in rock.

I love the CCR tune. That is just a great song and Fogerty's vocal is so good on it.

I also really liked Tell It To The Rain by The Four Seasons. It almost got the Golden Pell. However, I'll have to say that honor goes to:

Glen Yarbrough and the song Baby, The Rain Must Fall. Hopefully, I got his name right and the song title right. Beautiful.

Hey, I thought of a song that doesn't have rain anywhere in the title but seems to me like it would fit, and that is Driving My Life Away by Eddie Rabbit. Do you remember that one? "Windshield wipers, tapping out a tempo/keeping perfect rhythm with the song on the radioooooo".

I'll try to finish it up this afternoon.

Lovely songs that bring back nice memories from both parts of the Kentucky Derby series. I loved that song "Wildfire" from so long ago.

If enjoying the Weekend Power Hour on a Monday morning is against the law; then, you'd best arrest me! Otherwise; to let you know I thoroughly enjoyed each artist & selection today.

You can never ever ever go wrong starting a show off with a Barney Fife soundbyte! I can hear your tastes changing in your recent shows versus shows like this. This is Michael the "Top 40" guy! hahaha...

Do you really still like Moby? I was hopeful that you had moved on from those horrible Moby days! hahahaha... If it wasnt for the fact that he feuded with eminemineminem, or whoever that is, and the commercial that played that Stars song until society begged for mercy, nobody would've ever knew who he was...

Everything else sounded great! as usuall.. I love Three Dog Night, as a kid I stared at that Cyan record cover for hours! I seen them on the Midnight Special (at least I think itwas, it couldve been Rock Concert as well), the drummer was playing a clear see-through kit, why that was cool I have no idea but thats the kind of stuff that made listen and watch! Thought they were the coolest band I'd ever seen and heard. I posted Out In The Country for the crowd on here a while back, and it got a luke warm reception. Even considered Pieces of April last month but pulled it back because of that. Maybe I will try again though!

Keb Mo was smooth, liked it!

Heres some Real Men of Genius trivia for you! Dave Bickler is the voice behind the narrative, he's the original vocalist from Survivor and the same voice you hear on Eye of the Tiger! Seen them do the Real Men of Genius stuff live during halftime of a Charlotte Bobcats game! They made up like 4 or 5 bits about Chalrotte and the NBA here and they stole the show (which is easy to do with the Bobcats, hahahaha)!!!

Great show!

RJ,
With that first one, that's what I'm here for!
I get it, if I say "horse songs" fast it means I am talking about those women our politicians hire, lol!
Yep, I had 2 George Harrison songs in there, and I agree, one clearly better than the other, but both worth a play.
I have noticed over the years that people feel strongly about that Wildfire- they either hate it or love it, not much in between.
It's always moved me, and I am a city guy- never had a pony named Wildfire or anything else, lol!
The Lightfoot song is called Pony Man, and like so much of his stuff, I always enjoy hearing and playing it.
The Golden Pell to the second George Harrison tune, Horse To Water, is the one I would have picked too.
As for the guitar work and all the musicianship, it is on that Jools Holland album, and is commonly considered the LAST thing George ever recorded.
In the previous comments I mentioned a meeting of the minds.
Before I did the show, I had a thought bubble about The Race Is On, and was going to play it by Dave Edmunds...but I also considered the George Jones original.
Alas, the bubble evaporated by the time I sat down to do the show, one of those casualties of free-form.
But damn, it would have sounded good right after that bugle, lol!
Maybe next time, and great thinking on your part.
Keep on anticipating what I'll play, it makes you more of a participant and I love that!
Thanks for listening and the keen thoughts, glad you liked what I did here,
Mike

Mike, you are right, I did like part 2.

I totally forgot about A Horse With No Name. Great song by America. And you have to quit saying "horse songs", cause it sounds like something else (think of the world's oldest profession).

Did I hear you right, 2 George Harrison songs? The first one, Dark Horse, was okay, but that second one...more on that in a moment.

I have always liked Michael Martin Murphy's "horse song". Wildfire really moved me when I was younger. I literally dreamed about the story it told. Plus, we had a pony that always made me think of that song, although her name was not Wildfire.

For the Golden Pell, it's downto two...the Gordon Lightfoot track (I missed the name), and the second George Harrison tune, Horse To Water. What a great little bit of guitar work on that one. So I'm giving it to George. Both are outstanding songs.

Nice show.
