ROCKOLLECTIONS: SALUTE TO MOTHERS PT.4

After playing songs about Good Mothers last chapter, I promised you Bad Mothers.
And this is a Salute, lol?
Yes, Good, Bad, it takes all kinds.
I’ll start with the most notorious Bad Mother I could think of- and this Mom is from one of the most successful albums around.
After that, two songs I will undoubtedly be introducing you to.
If you recall, during my Psychotherapy series last summer I played a pair of strange, but well-received by listeners, songs by Janis Ian and Dory Previn.
This time we’ll flip-flop the artists and start with Previn, and her sad and spooky tale.
They are from vinyl LP’s and sound like it, but that’s the only way I have them.
The common thread connecting these Bad Mothers is that they are manipulative, and most especially possessive.
Not wanting their child to ever leave them!
You’ll hear what I mean.
After that, a song by the Who I CHOSE to play from the vinyl- I heard the CD version and found it to be so lacking in sparkle and life it was no contest…the old vinyl copy wins.
And that Mother in the Who song goes beyond Bad into insane, I mean what the…?
I’ll close this episode out with an interesting change in direction regarding Mothers- one that is not often talked about, never mind playing songs about.
I hope you enjoy this Part 4, as it is a curious mix of known and unknown!
And with so many Mother songs left, I will continue with them next week for two final installments.
Hey, it’s free-form radio, and I pick the music, lol!
You should trust me by now!
Mike

RockRoll360 #153 - Goodbye to WBCN (Part.44)

Mark Parenteau-Charles Laquidara -
and Sue Specker at the WBCN strike of 1979.
In 1979, WBCN was purchased by
Hemisphire Broadcasting who let go several
longtime employees who they determined
“non-essential.” Hemisphere president Michael Wiener
fired 19 of 37 employees and refused to deal with
the union. He wanted to trim”excess fat” while
keeping the “core of the station.”News
director/dissector Danny Schechter was out the door,
but folks like Charles Laquidara, Mark Parenteau,
Matt Siegel, Tracy Roach, and Tony Berardini were kept.
This set off a local controversy in Boston that
resulted in the entire airstaff walking
off the air striking in protest. During the walkout,
WBCN stayed on the air with substitute DJs imported
from several out-of-town Hemisphire sister stations.
The protest got local media coverage and the attention
of several well-known Boston-based music acts,
including The Cars, Aerosmith, and Boston, who got
behind the protest. When several large advertisers
pulled spots, and the union filed a challenge to
Hemisphere’s license, pointing out that by forcing
the staff out on strike, Hemisphere had created a
situation where it couldn’t provide the public service
it was required to, Hemisphire relented, the fired
staffers were rehired and the DJs went back on the air.
The protest was over. (It was also rumored that
Hemisphere’s FCC lawyers had vetoed the course of
action advised by Hemisphere’s labor lawyers.)
On March 9, three weeks into the strike, Hemisphere
agreed to the last of the union’s terms and the strikers
voted to return on Monday, March 12 of 1979, just
in time to celebrate their 11th Birthday on the 15th.
Charles Laquidara played “Superman” by the Kinks
back to back for an entire show in celebration.
More at the door here at 104.
Here’s a collection of material I gathered back
the day the strike ended from a cassette I
named at the time WBCN’s Back !
Except for the 1st song by Sass, the original
playlist of songs from that broadcast has been
segued into re-recordings to ensure a
better sound quality for this podcast of one of the greatest
moments in progressive radio rock history.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A FAT GUY PT.3

As we open Part 3, I will dip back into that solo Leslie West album from 1969, back when there was no group called Mountain.
His version of a Bob Dylan song made famous by the Band, and also by Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & Trinity as the theme to the British comedy Absolutely Fabulous.
In an attempt to avoid being compared to Cream, the group added a keyboardist.
So we will return to Mountain proper, for a series of songs I have always liked, including one that has always had a touch of melancholy for me.
In the 70’s there were some personnel changes.
Also in the 70’s, Leslie West kept busy by also playing with The Who on their Who’s Next sessions- and he was on the demo of Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Also on a Bo Diddley 20th Anniversary Tribute All Star Album.
And in the 2000’s, he has contributed to an Ozzie Osborne album, plus had solo and group LP’s.
I will close this chapter out with a song dedicated to our next power blackout!
In the next and final podcast, Leslie West joins a supergroup- but were they?
Mike
