ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING GEORGE HARRISON & JOHN LENNON 2011 PT.1

It is that bittersweet time of year again.
Between the deaths of George Harrison and John Lennon- one by disease, the other murdered.
I hadn’t realized it was 10 years ago for George, he died on November 29th, 2001, and we here in New York were still reeling from the attacks of Sept.11th.
As is usual for these shows, I will try to play interesting things you may never have heard.
In this episode dedicated to George, I have a bare version, without the chorus, of a #1 Billboard song for him, followed by an answer song to it that came 35 YEARS later…and by another former Beatle!
Then a musical look at the friendship between George and Bob Dylan.
So if you were/are a fan of George Harrison, The Beatles or Bob Dylan, you should find something enjoyable and fascinating here.
Next up, John Lennon.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: COVERED BY THE BEATLES VOL.2 - PT.1

Here’s the next Volume and episode of a now-and-then series I started in February, Covered By The Beatles.
As you should be aware, the Beatles put many older Rock & Roll songs, mostly from America, on their early albums and EP’s.
So the simple idea is to play the Beatle Cover Version followed by the Original Version.
And I’ll be playing these the proper way to hear them, in the order they originally were released over in England.
The selections in this chapter will all be from the LP, With The Beatles.
I never realized this until doing the show- an album that was released in the UK on a fateful day in the United States!
The first time we did this it went very well, and this should be equally enjoyable…with one song in particular that is a rarity I doubt you have ever heard.
Make your comparisons as to the better interpretations, and just HAVE FUN!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE WICKED PICKETT PT.2 & MEMORIAL DAY

Continuing with our featured artist, Wilson Pickett, I was surprised to find out quite a few things about his life while researching him, like his relationship with his mother.
And especially the trouble he seemed to get into in his later years.
Aren’t you supposed to do that when in your younger age?
We’ll open this one with an old single I did not play in the first half.
It seems Engineer Ken Stanley, who is a musician, remembered and liked the one I chose not to play, particularly the lead guitar in it, as that is his instrument of choice.
How could I deny my old pal anything, lol?
I’l have a song by the Wicked Pickett that, although not a hit single for him, I particulalrly like.
And it could be Rock Lives/Rockollections first ever Musical Recipe!
Prompting a smartass comment by me, lol!
Pickett had the good sense and taste use a young Duane Allman as a session guitarist on a hit cover of the Beatles’ Hey Jude.
He cut some hits in Philadelphia with Gamble & Huff productions in the early ’70s.
He even did a hit version of the Archies’ Sugar, Sugar, which is almost tolerable and I could have played, but I doubt I will EVER play by ANY artist!
Let’s just call it good taste and a respect for the audience, lol!
I hate that damn song!
All in all, a good show that will definitely bring back memories of remembered and half-forgotten songs- and a time when music formats weren’t so rigidly structured, when good music was simply good music, and the beancounters weren’t so desperately trying to appeal to the fragmented audience they created.
At the end of the show, we acknowledge Memorial Day, very distinct from Veteran’s Day and far more solemn, with a song about the impossible-not-to-be-touched-by Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
Have a Happy Memorial Day, and remember those brave soldiers who gave their lives…not just the store sales and the barbecues!

RockRoll360 #153 - Goodbye to WBCN (Part.44)

Mark Parenteau-Charles Laquidara -
and Sue Specker at the WBCN strike of 1979.
In 1979, WBCN was purchased by
Hemisphire Broadcasting who let go several
longtime employees who they determined
“non-essential.” Hemisphere president Michael Wiener
fired 19 of 37 employees and refused to deal with
the union. He wanted to trim”excess fat” while
keeping the “core of the station.”News
director/dissector Danny Schechter was out the door,
but folks like Charles Laquidara, Mark Parenteau,
Matt Siegel, Tracy Roach, and Tony Berardini were kept.
This set off a local controversy in Boston that
resulted in the entire airstaff walking
off the air striking in protest. During the walkout,
WBCN stayed on the air with substitute DJs imported
from several out-of-town Hemisphire sister stations.
The protest got local media coverage and the attention
of several well-known Boston-based music acts,
including The Cars, Aerosmith, and Boston, who got
behind the protest. When several large advertisers
pulled spots, and the union filed a challenge to
Hemisphere’s license, pointing out that by forcing
the staff out on strike, Hemisphere had created a
situation where it couldn’t provide the public service
it was required to, Hemisphire relented, the fired
staffers were rehired and the DJs went back on the air.
The protest was over. (It was also rumored that
Hemisphere’s FCC lawyers had vetoed the course of
action advised by Hemisphere’s labor lawyers.)
On March 9, three weeks into the strike, Hemisphere
agreed to the last of the union’s terms and the strikers
voted to return on Monday, March 12 of 1979, just
in time to celebrate their 11th Birthday on the 15th.
Charles Laquidara played “Superman” by the Kinks
back to back for an entire show in celebration.
More at the door here at 104.
Here’s a collection of material I gathered back
the day the strike ended from a cassette I
named at the time WBCN’s Back !

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUNE IS NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.1

I think you can easily see where I am going with this Theme series for the next two weeks.
National Rivers Month is celebrated annually during the month of June to promote awareness and preservation of the country’s Rivers.
A river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing toward an ocean, a lake, a sea or another river.
In a few cases, a river simply flows into the ground or dries up completely.
Small rivers may also be called streams, creeks or brooks.
For this event, I have gathered a bunch of my favorite River songs.
And as usual, there are far too many for me to have time enough to play.
So I just let the tide take me in that free-form and free-association way of choosing the songs, flowing along like a River.
I haven’t done the Parts 3 & 4 yet, but I can already see that some truly wonderful River songs will necessarily be left out.
In this opening chapter, I will take you down to the River and watch it flow, roll on it, realize how wide it can be, and play a River song that some people (including members of the Beatles) consider the Greatest Rock & Roll song ever made.
We will also hear a River song that would be a drunkard’s dream, one that speaks of how shallow they can be (although not as shallow as me, lol), a classic one from the Man In Black, and ending this episode, a warning about trying to cross a River.
Hopefully, you will enjoy this opening salvo for one of our most beautiful natural resources- it contains some very enjoyable music you will both remember and be introduced to.
Give me a Theme about something, and I will give you several shows, lol!
Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MUSIC FOR MONEY & THE FINANCIAL CRISIS PT.6

I am dedicating almost this entire episode to Gold.
It seems that when people lose confidence in their paper currency they turn to it.
While I can understand that, the problem with buying Gold is that it does nothing to help the economy, except for the seller.
People hoard it, an unproductive asset- while even leaving your cash in the bank spurs economic activity, as banks lend against your deposit.
But it is an ancient store of value, and at over $1200 an ounce a tempting one.
There are quite a few songs about Gold, and I just touched the surface here.
In fact, I wanted to play Midas Man by Renaissance, but time constraints worked against it.
Presumably you know that story- everything King Midas touched turned to Gold.
But as a morality tale, that seeming blessing turned into a curse.
So if you know the song, play it in your head, lol!
However I was able to play a related song by the Hollies that should have your memory in overdrive upon hearing it.
One of those forgotten gems from the FM 60’s!
And here’s something you may not have known. I didn’t.
In 1933, during the Depression and soon after Franklin Roosevelt became President, he confiscated almost all privately owned gold, including gold coins.
If you did not turn in your gold, you were subject to jail time- up to 10 years!
Roosevelt did this without Congressional approval, simply issuing an Executive Order.
Without question his actions were unconstitutional, and hey, those Executive Orders…sound familiar?
The next-to-last song in this chapter makes me laugh, and I chose it deliberately as it pertains to my own lack of Money OR Gold.
And here I am trying to warn you as if I were some financial genius, lol!
But I am attempting to do just that, as I believe some real hard times are coming.
Ending the show with a Beatle song…but not by the Beatles.
We’ll wrap things up next week, and I have two separate endings planned.
I hope you join me for the final two parts.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: IT’S BLOOMING TIME PT.7

It’s still May, so we continue with our April Showers Bring May Flowers.
Well I promised you Grass, and I will now deliver.
It was funny, because of that smoking pot double meaning of Grass, I couldn’t look at Engineer Ken without both of us cracking up.
I tried very hard to only refer to the grass I walk upon, lol!
Got a real good cookin’ opening set of R&B/Soul songs, all of which you may not have heard in a long time.
Then, do you remember that after the Beatles broke up, we were all wondering what drummer Ringo Starr was going to do?
The others had put out their solo albums, but they wrote their own material.
It turned out Ringo did an album called Sentimental Journey, with all songs from the 1930’s & 40’s- some maybe older, I don’t know.
Now that has become trendy nowadays, but Ringo Starr aka Richard Starkey was the FIRST!
We have a song from that album that fits our Grass theme, followed by a couple of other songs you definitely ought to remember- and no doubt, definitely haven’t heard in a while.
Ahhh, that is my biggest joy with these shows- pulling out those forgotten songs!
We will close out this next-to-last chapter with a sort of musical argument.
It seems one lady thinks the grass is green, while two other women are of the opinion it is blue.
Let’s graze!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.3

There was a Captain Video years ago, so this is Captain Audio speaking…
We will continue our journey into space with some more songs about the Moon, as this whole series was inspired by the 1st Moon Landing on July 20, 1969.
Now, everybody knows that George Harrison, with the Beatles, did the great Here Comes The Sun on the Abbey Road album.
But I am sure fewer people are aware that he recorded a song called Here Comes The Moon some years later, as a solo artist.
I will open with that.
And one Beatle calls for another, this one doing a great flip side of a single.
Then we will turn our attention to some historical clarification.
It appears all these years later that Neil Armstrong correctly spoke, as he has insisted, those first words on the moon.
There is recent evidence supporting that he properly said, “One small step for (A) man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Without that crucial “A”, it is redundant- and he was to some extent criticized for it.
Wonder what I would have said?
Probably something along the lines of “Holy crap!”- but not precisely “crap”!
Next we will take a brief look at the effects the Full Moon has on people- and watch out for those shadows too.
Then, the Moon can fill some folks up with so much love, they want to dance by the light of it.
So two songs, coincedentally both from 1961- the first of which just plain makes me ROCK!
Oh man, it makes ME wanna dance around!
In closing, we will note that Armstrong said he had no trouble moving around up there. Despite being 1/6 Earth’s gravity, it was easier than the simulations he had been put through.
And it is now official- this will be the longest and most ambitious Theme series I have ever attempted.
As seemingly endless as Space itself…oh I hope you don’t really feel that way, lol!

Longtown Sound 338 The Beatles, Paul Thorn, Adrienne Pierce, Brett Dennen, Circe Link, Evan Harriman, Jack Falk Project

Wednesday is Pancake Wednesday, a well known Longtown fact. It’s Uncleshag’s vision of the finest independent artists world-wide included with every breakfast served. So, it only figures that the ideal meal should accompany the very best music and fruits. Enjoy the blueberry, strawberry, the melons and whipped creme along with your plain, buckwheat or potato pancakes. Bacon and sausage optional! If tempted and without resistance, go for the heaping dish of vanilla ice cream on the side. A tasty treat! Do not forget the Apricot Pudding!
