ROCKOLLECTIONS: A SHOW ABOUT NOTHING PT.3

Funny thing, I didn’t realize yesterday would be Columbus Day until after 5 in the afternoon last Friday, as I was talking to a girl and she mentioned it.
I probably would have gone to work, something that could have happened on the Seinfeld show, lol!
All things considered, Seinfeld was probably the funniest Television show ever.
And I was thinking, it would not have worked in any city other than New York!
Think about that…there’s just no way- the apartments, stores, restaurants, streets, movies, etc.
The CHARACTERS are New York!
A few sound bites from the show and more of the music of Nothing, as I carry on with this odd topic.
And I will get to Christopher Columbus in the next and final chapter.
I think you’ll like this one.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL FOR 2010 PT.4 FINAL

Concluding a tradition I have been doing for years, but skipped last year.
This year I felt like bringing it back.
It’s a celebration of the lives of those we lost in the previous year- in this case 2010.
Mostly, it’s an Irish Wake!
Many of these people have undoubtedly touched you in some way, shape or form, and made your life a bit happier and more pleasant.
For the musical folks who passed on, they are deserving of one more play, at least.
And we will deal with some other cultural figures as well, from TV, movies, etc.
You are welcome to anticipate or second-guess my own musical choices!
And I always realize after awhile that for those who didn’t know about the demise of some of these people, I am the resented Bearer Of Bad News!
Well, somebody’s gotta do it, lol!

In this fourth and final episode, those selected are:
Mike Edwards (a bad year for those named Edwards, this is the 3rd one on these shows)
Eddie Fisher
Solomon Burke
Clay Cole
Plus a return to Television, complete with a singing performance by Leslie Nielsen.
And wrapping it all up with the incomparable voice of Fred Foy, a name you may not recognize but his contribution to our culture you should find unforgettable!

For these folks we pay tribute to and memorialize, they can’t give any more than they have.

Till next year…

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL FOR 2010 PT.2

This is a tradition I have been doing for years, but I skipped it last year- thought it might be getting played out.
Now I felt like bringing it back.
In this second episode, those selected are:
Ronnie James Dio
Lena Horne
then Dennis Hopper from the Movies
after which I wander off the path into Television
ending with something you will either love for bringing back memories of what was a phenomenon for those of a certain age, or sadly have no interest in- taken from the actual “Disneyland” TV series where portions were played in bits and pieces, put together here in its entirety, making it the world’s longest version of The Ballad Of Davy Crockett!

For these folks we pay tribute to and memorialize, they can’t give any more than they have.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.5

Tribute Memorial Pt. 5

Well after some vacationing, I am back from the dead with some more dead, lol!
Oh, I need a rest from my rest.
Picking up from where we left off, Liz Claiborne passed away last year, the famous clothing designer.
I’ve got something from the Kinks for her.
The guy who wrote Unchained Melody died, Hy Zaret. Interesting story in that he was supposed to write it for a 1955 movie called Unchained, but he refused to include the word “unchained” anywhere in the song.
Give a listen, he didn’t!
Also, we lost Boots Randolph, whose instrumental hit was equally famous for being the theme song for a very funny British comedian. You should recognize it immediately.
Bill Pinkney the last remaining original Drifter died in 2007. He was the distinctive bass singer who left the group just before their major successes.
As this was broadcast just one day after St. Pat’s, I thought I would do my Mom proud by going back to Tommy Makem and the Clancys for one more. This one a folk song you should know.
Hilly Crystal, founder and owner of the legendary CBGB’s died last year. So one from the early punk band Television for him.
Speaking of television, Alice Ghostley of the show Bewitched died- she will never be MORE Ghostley!
I will leave you with a couple of questions.
What would you play for some upcoming late folks such as Tom Snyder and famous mime Marcel Marceau?
Come back and hear what I chose.
