ROCKOLLECTIONS: SONGS FOR FOOLS PT.1

 

We will put the Tribute/Memorials aside temporarily for these special Songs For Fools.
I got off to a rocky start on this one, guess I was anxious to get going on this April 1st, lol.
These two Pods were a lot of fun to do, and if you don’t suspect anything yet, well the 3rd song I played should explain it all.
I intend to give you some “Oh Wow” moments with this two-parter, those songs just below the consciousness that haven’t been heard in a long time but are so enjoyable to welcome back.
Everybody at various points in their life acts like a fool.
And from the earliest days of Rock & Roll right up to today, there have been songs about them.
No fooling!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.5

Well after some vacationing, I am back from the dead with some more dead, lol!
Oh, I need a rest from my rest.
Picking up from where we left off, Liz Claiborne passed away last year, the famous clothing designer.
I’ve got something from the Kinks for her.
The guy who wrote Unchained Melody died, Hy Zaret. Interesting story in that he was supposed to write it for a 1955 movie called Unchained, but he refused to include the word “unchained” anywhere in the song.
Give a listen, he didn’t!
Also, we lost Boots Randolph, whose instrumental hit was equally famous for being the theme song for a very funny British comedian. You should recognize it immediately.
Bill Pinkney the last remaining original Drifter died in 2007. He was the distinctive bass singer who left the group just before their major successes.
As this was broadcast just one day after St. Pat’s, I thought I would do my Mom proud by going back to Tommy Makem and the Clancys for one more. This one a folk song you should know.
Hilly Crystal, founder and owner of the legendary CBGB’s died last year. So one from the early punk band Television for him.
Speaking of television, Alice Ghostley of the show Bewitched died- she will never be MORE Ghostley!
I will leave you with a couple of questions.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.4

I had to get this one up, and jump ahead in our chronological order, to have it out there for St. Patrick’s Day!
Tommy Makem died in 2007, and along with the Clancy Brothers put out some wonderful music, Irish and otherwise.
They were legitimate folkies, and if you think they had no rock & roll roots you are mistaken.
Don’t forget, at that 30th Anniversary for Bob Dylan, they were there with the likes of George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Roger McGuinn, Tracey Chapman, Dylan himself, and many others. And they are on the resulting album singing Dylan with all those rock luminaries.
So a few from them, including Moonshiner, a love song to whiskey!
And as I said in the show, back when I was drinking, I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard, and sang, those songs!
Interestingly, Kitty Carlisle and Tom Poston died 13 days apart. They were both panelists on the same TV game show for years- I can’t remember Carlisle ever NOT being on it!
That prompted me to play some John Lennon.
We lost Bobby “Boris” Pickett last year, of Monster Mash fame- I will play something far more obscure by him.
Then it is one for and from Zola Taylor, of the Platters.
And we will end this one with one-hit-wonder Freddie Scott, who I was surprised for some reason to learn was 74 when he died.
Being temporarily part of the living, I think I may take some time off to celebrate my birthday, or as I call it, the Ides Of Mike- an 11 day bacchanal.
But we will continue where we left off.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.3

Continuing our remembrance of those we lost in 2007, I have Bowie Kuhn, former Commissioner of Baseball leading off. I had something to play for him but I accidentally left it home.
So we get started musically with Luther Ingram.
Nothing to play for Calvert DeForest, aka Larry “Bud” Mellman, of David Letterman fame.
But I had to mention him since he lived across the street from me, and I would meet him all the time.
Moving on to Hy Weiss, founder of Old Town Records, one of many small record companies that used to exist before the few, big conglomerates took over the industry. And limiting our choices.
So, a couple of songs from the old Old Town label I hope you recall.
Then it’s one you have to remember, in honor of Hank Medress of the Tokens who died last year.
That prompted my spontaneous and half-hearted attempt at an impression of Ron Lundy, formerly of the Oldies Station WCBS-FM- that in truth no longer exists, despite what they claim.
A very interesting and terrific song is next that was what was then called an FM turntable hit back in the 60’s and early 70’s, by the group Ambrosia, for quirky author Kurt Vonnegut, who died at the age of 84.
Ambrosia intentionally took the name of this song, Nice, Nice, Very Nice from the title of one of the chapters in Vonnegut’s book, “Cat’s Cradle”.
Apparently that is much easier to write that than it was for me to say, lol!
It just felt so good to hear that one again, and if you never have, give it a good listen!
We will go out gung ho this time with the late great Hawaiian singer, Don Ho.
Hope you are respectfully enjoying our trip into the musical nooks and crannies to honor these recently departed artists.
We will have more lives to celebrate- I am not yet even halfway done.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.2

Before we move on to our next R.I.P., I have a bit more about Eric Von Schmidt, including the liner notes to one of his albums written by Bob Dylan.
Then it is on to the loss of Billy Henderson- if you didn’t know, a member of the Spinners- and a song he is most connected with.
This is a strange episode, with seemingly a lot of non-rock people. But trust me, it will be painless and have some damn good music.
So is the case with the beautiful Barbara McNair, an actress but a singer too. And I’ll play an old 1968 single she made for Motown Records, so you know it can’t be bad. In 1968, NOTHING coming out of Motown was bad!
Then Frankie Laine who died at 93. This guy had hits pre-rock & roll, but his career and hits went well into the 50’s and beyond.
From 1968 again, an outstanding instrumental combining elements of jazz and funk called Soulful Strut for the loss of Eldee Young, one half of Young-Holt Unlimited. You should know this one but probably haven’t heard it in a long time. Just simply a great song.
After that, Ken and I did have a discussion about whether to play Betty Hutton.
I pushed for it, because if we are truly to be free-form there are no restrictions.
Although she has no discernible rock & roll roots, she was certainly part of our American pop culture.
And recently I have seen bits and pieces of her on Turner Classic Movies, and although I had no opinion before, I find her to be immensely likable in a fun, almost tomboyish way.
Those sweetheart of a girl-next-door qualities are more than obvious in what you will hear.
I will end this one with a question. What song would you play for the late director of the classic movie Cool Hand Luke?

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2007 PT.1

It is time, a little later this year, for my annual Tribute/Memorial for the artists who passed away in 2007.
They will have a connection to Rock & Roll- however slim that might be- and we will remember some other figures who had a place in our pop culture too.
As is traditional, I’ll start with Graham Nash’s beautiful and melancholy Lost Another One.
A song inspired by his listening to the radio and hearing about George Harrison’s death- knowing that, give a listen to those lyrics.
I will be doing these in a chronological order for the most part. There will be some exceptions, but they will have their reasons.
These people can give no more, and they deserve at least one more play.
As a result, since you can’t control who or when somebody is going to die, I will be all over the musical map even more than usual.
In this opening chapter, we will cover the losses of Sneaky Pete Kleinow, pedal steel player for the Flying Burrito Brothers, actress Yvonne DeCarlo (see what I mean?), Pookie Hudson of the Spaniels, Social Distortion’s Brent Liles, Denny Doherty of the Mamas & Papas and the legendary and influential folkie Eric Von Schmidt.
Enjoy the music, they would want that.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING TO THE “HEART” OF VALENTINE’S DAY 2008 PT.2 END

I am going to start off this last half of our Valentine’s Day celebration of the Heart with a song for the lovely Michelle, who sent me those terrific quotes on the subject of Love.
Not a mushy song, but one I know she likes…I have ways!
Got a couple of beauties after that- great Heart songs.
Then the very interesting matter of an Elvis Presley movie soundtrack from 1961.
On it was a song that a guy named Joe Dowell was smart enough to grab and record for himself.
The result, a worldwide # 1 smash hit for him!
We will play it, and I have to wonder when you heard it last. Probably been a while.
And for some of you, like NEVER!
I’ll play a couple more favorites of mine, followed by a rather obscure Heart song from our boys, the Rolling Stones, from an early album of theirs.
We will close things out with one last quote, this time from Helen Keller.
And a song about the one absolute requirement you must possess to have enjoyed this music and these quotes.

Valentine’s Day part 1

 

It’s that time of year again…A time of chocolate and roses, the colors- red and pink and hearts, hearts, everywhere- all playing a part in this universal “day of romance”.  I will also be celebrating since I have gotten bitten by the Love Bug- last April actually.

To me, he’s my angel and often I call him my “Music Man”, as I’m sure many of you do as well, since he is often our personal DJ, opening up brave new worlds, as he enhances our listening experience.  He brings to us sometimes never before heard lyrics and melodies, we otherwise would not have had the privilege of discovering.

It’s Mr. Rockollections himself, Mike Pell! To make a long story short, we met at WLSO. Miss Planet Music, was introduced to Mr. Rockollections by the infamous Uncle Shag and the rest is history.

I made this podcast for him a little while ago, and we thought it would be nice to share it with all of you. There are some great songs on this podcast- ones you may be inspired to share with the one you love.

Just a few notes- I utilized my Music Man’s approach with regards to presentation.  And this little puppy was originally 80 minutes long, so I split it into 4 segments. Yes it’s the same exact podcast I gave to him minus a few “ums” and “you knows” taken out just to clean it up a tad, nothing added or changed. Each part will be posted with no extra introductions, leading immediately into the next segment.  

I must warn you, there are some real beauties on this podcast, songs that you’ve probably never heard before- little treasures to discover. There may even be a song or two you find that says exactly what you want to say to your sweety, just like I found with all these messages from my heart!

Here’s to those who have found their special someone and to others who have yet to find him or her- May it be soon! I’m a firm believer there is indeed someone for everyone. And when it’s meant to be, they will find you- just like my Music Man found me.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING TO THE “HEART” OF VALENTINE’S DAY 2008 PT.1

This show was broadcast Tuesday, and I was so into it I forgot it was Lincoln’s Birthday.
Happy Birthday, Abe! You had the toughest job of all our Presidents.
Now, on to the romantic side of this old heart of mine.
“Heart” will again, as two years ago, appear in the titles of all the songs played in this and the next episode.
Now that will include heartbeat, heartache and heartbreak. And we will talk about that.
Not that I am saying that any of the titles WILL include those words- you’ll have to listen to find out.
I think part of the fun is guessing what Heart songs I am going to pick out to play.
I will tell you this however, you will hear the Jefferson Airplane’s Marty Balin with a beautiful song from a solo album he did.
And I will play contrasting versions of an old song by the Searchers (from which Bob Dylan stole half the tune for Don’t Think Twice), and a very recent one by Robert Gordon from his latest album.
Scattered throughout all the much more music will be some wonderful, touching quotes about Love.
They were sent to me by the sweetest and loveliest girl- my Valentine sweetheart Michelle.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MARTIN LUTHER KING AND SONGS OF FREEDOM PT.4 FINAL

We begin our final chapter with another interpretation of the song we ended the last chapter with.
Great songs tend to be covered by other artists, and this one has been done at least by the Chambers Brothers, a weird but thoroughly enjoyable version by the Vanilla Fudge and the one I have chosen- by Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart.
There is just something about the interplay of Beck’s guitar and Stewart’s voice that does it for me.
Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
That same year, Bob Dylan released HIS own version of a song we have already played twice.
I felt I would be cheating you if I didn’t play the serious, poetic, brilliant use of words contained in Dylan’s epic talking about all the ways we are NOT free! So I played it.
Then the sad account of the King assassination- and I do remember thinking, man, what is going on here? You disagree with someone, so you shoot them?
And that will begin our grand finale.
To close it all out, I have 3 of the best songs ever that speak to all of Mankind.
Kindly listen to the words- you will be better for it.
