ROCKOLLECTIONS: SALUTE TO MOTHERS PT.2
![]()

I’ll open this chapter for Mothers with two interpretations of the same song.
As I was discussing recently with my friend RJ, there are songs that are covered by artists and Pop-musiced-up to the point where the meaning intended by the writer is lost.
That seems to be case with the first, at least to me- then I’ll play the proper message version by the composer, Randy Newman.
I started talking about my own Mom, how she is no longer with us, and how much I miss her.
I had absolutely no idea what I was going to play going into this half, and that sentimental mood brought on by thoughts of my very cool Mom caused me to take a risk.
The risk being that today’s radio seemingly has no place for mellow songs- gotta keep those meters in the studio hopping!
But I’ll play them when it suits me and it fits.
Adding to the risk is the high probability you have never heard the songs in the set, so I will really be pushing it, lol!
But that set will be the centerpiece of the episode- what they have in common, besides being beautiful music, is the fact they are Songs By ACTUAL Mothers To Their ACTUAL Children!
What a marvelous gift to be able to do such a thing.
Due to the sheer number of songs about Mothers, and far more importantly, the fact that Mothers deserve to be Saluted for more than just ONE day, I will continue with additional music about them next week…and maybe beyond.
I wish all Mothers the Happiest Mothers Day!
If your Mom is deceased, a truly loving remembrance.
If Mom is still in your life, cherish her and let her know how much you love her.
Please don’t wait until it is chiseled on a tombstone- let her know NOW!!!
She will be so thrilled and grateful to hear it, and you will feel terrific after saying it!

RockRoll360 # 035 - When The Levee Breaks - Pt. 1

If it keeps on rainin’, levee’s goin’ to break,
If it keeps on rainin’, levee’s goin’ to break,
When The Levee Breaks I’ll have no place to stay.
When it came to hurricane provisions I was always one of those people
who chuckled at the sight of watching shoppers fill their carts with
water and canned goods. It would never happen here right?
Those people were just paranoid, buying up all the water and making
the lines at the gas stations too long at every mention of a hurricane.
Then along comes Katrina.
Here is my tribute and remembrance of these terrible days in
New Orleans, La., in August & September of 2005.

LIKE A HURRICANE ( Unplugged )- NEIL YOUNG

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A TOWN WITHOUT PITNEY PT.1

Well, I think I’ll keep you guessing on this one, although there is a huge clue in the title of the episode.
This time we will feature an artist who:
Was a master of teenage romantic angst;
Along with Roy Orbison brought orchestral pop into Rock & Roll;
Was one of the era’s best songwriters, with Hello Mary Lou, He’s A Rebel, Rubber Ball, etc.;
Was an early proponent of “countrypolitan” music;
Was among the first to introduce Eastern elements into pop, well before the Beatles;
Was one of the first to record Jagger/Richards & Randy Newman compositions;
Was an early protege of Phil Spector;
Produced and played all the instruments and voices on his debut hit single;
Played the maracas on the Rolling Stones version of Not Fade Away;
Sang the title song for two classic movies;
Was the first teen idol to perform at the Oscars;
Had a song he SANG prevented from reaching # 1 on charts by a song he WROTE;
Was deservedly inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002.
Figured it out?
PLAY the answer!
Oh, and I finally confused the radio with the podcast. Listen at the break, as I say “Rockollections” instead of “Rock Lives” (hate that name!)
