RockRoll360 #157- Chalk Dust Torture (Part 1)

 

God, it’s been a while since my last post.
Been very busy with this and that.
I also have to put a little laziness into
the mix also.
Well, two events since our last
meeting. The Boston Bruins winning the Stanley
Cup for the 1st time since 1972.
Boston has won 7 titles in 10 years.
To add to that all of 4 major sport teams
have won a title. The Patriots (02,04,05),
Red Sox (04,07), Bruins (2011), and Celtics (08).
No other city has done that.
And on a sad note the loss of Clarence Clemons of
Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. Both
news items are noted here in this show.
Here’s the latest compilation I put together
here during the month of June of 2011.

RockRoll360 #153 - Goodbye to WBCN (Part.44)

In 1979, WBCN was purchased by
Hemisphire Broadcasting who let go several
longtime employees who they determined
“non-essential.” Hemisphere president Michael Wiener
fired 19 of 37 employees and refused to deal with
the union.  He wanted to trim”excess fat” while
keeping the “core of the station.”News
director/dissector Danny Schechter was out the door,
but folks like Charles Laquidara, Mark Parenteau,
Matt Siegel, Tracy Roach, and Tony Berardini were kept.
This set off a local controversy in Boston that
resulted in the entire airstaff walking
off the air striking in protest. During the walkout,
WBCN stayed on the air with substitute DJs imported
from several out-of-town Hemisphire sister stations.
The protest got local media coverage and the attention
of several well-known Boston-based music acts,
including The Cars, Aerosmith, and Boston, who got
behind the protest. When several large advertisers
pulled spots, and the union filed a challenge to
Hemisphere’s license, pointing out that by forcing
the staff out on strike, Hemisphere had created a
situation where it couldn’t provide the public service
it was required to, Hemisphire relented, the fired
staffers were rehired and the DJs went back on the air.
The protest was over. (It was also rumored that
Hemisphere’s FCC lawyers had vetoed the course of
action advised by Hemisphere’s labor lawyers.)
On March 9, three weeks into the strike, Hemisphere
agreed to the last of the union’s terms and the strikers
voted to return on Monday, March 12 of 1979, just
in time to celebrate their 11th Birthday on the 15th.
Charles Laquidara played “Superman” by the Kinks
back to back for an entire show in celebration.

Except for the 1st song by Sass, the original
playlist of songs from that broadcast has been
segued into re-recordings to ensure a
better sound quality for this podcast of one of the greatest
moments in progressive radio rock history.

Most heads consider it importance second only to sex.
And grass will change your musical habits for the better.
Even when you listen later when your not stone.
“Listening to Music”. This cut tells you what kind of
music you can listen to while being stoned
(classical, folk, acid rock, jazz, electronic music).
He warns you never listen to Myron Florin (accordion player
for the Lawrence Welk Show), as well as several
other polka players while stoned, unless they
were being played all together at once.
Well I continue this thought with a collage of real
bad music clips, and ended up with a great ( one of my
favorite songs of all time ) epic tune called
FEEL THE BENEFIT  (Parts 1,2, and 3) by 10cc.
CRANK IT UP  !!!!  - It’s really a great song.

RockRoll360 #147- Goodbye to WBCN (Part.42)

 

Here we are at a phase of WBCN I was not a fan of
and of course not too familiar with. This is where
they tweak their format with modern rock and shock
talk. In early 1994, WBCN made its first major
format adjustment since 1968. The old DJs, station
IDs, and classic rock were gutted, replaced by an
alternative music format featuring new, younger jocks;
on April 1, 1996, the Stern show was switched to the live
morning airing from it’s none live evening broadcast.
The station lost some of its longtime listeners
(who migrated to the now co-owned WZLX, where former
WBCN DJs Laquidara and Carter Alan had gone) but quickly
gained credibility among many younger people. In any case,
it’s a part of the history of WBCN, with a change that
was necessary to gained new younger listeners as stated above.
Unfortunately they lost some older faithful fans.
I was one of them !  Thank God there is a place today we
can go and enjoy the Freeform BCN format or the
modern rock format for you younger listeners.

RockRoll360 #146 - A Child’s Garden Of Grass (Pot 2 of 4)

span>In 1969, Jack S. Margolis wrote a book called
A Child’s Garden of Grass. Two years later, an album based on
that book surfaced on Elektra Records. If you’re looking for a silly comedy album in which the entire theme is on marijuana, and its affects, then you will love this video of the original album, A Child’s Garden of Grass: A pre-legalization comedy.
Each subject of the album starts off with some strange electronic effects before the narrator gets on with the subject. Example is “Listening to Music”. This cut tells you what kind of music you can listen to while being stoned (classical, folk, acid rock, jazz, electronic music). He warns you never listen to Myron Florin (accordion player for the Lawrence Welk Show), as well as several other polka players while stoned, unless they were being played all together at once.

Another example is “Creativity” where the narrator seems to suggest when you’re stoned, you begin to overestimate your “artistic” talents. By the end of that cut, you start hearing some really bad rock and roll, played and sung by the person being stoned. Of course an album dealing with this subject should never be without “Physical Effects” and “Psychological Effects”, as well as how to acquire marijuana (which seems to suggest any manner possible, even stealing). “Psychological Effects” really cracks me up, because you hear a conversation between a man and a woman, and the person totally forgot what he was saying, and didn’t care. There was also a lot of giggling as they listen to some really crappy music.

That’s one small toke for man, and a giant toke for mankind.
Not only did the smoke linger over all things enlightened
and libidinal. Turns out its pseudo-scholarly study could
provide a laugh, as evidenced by this cult comedy classic
from 1971. A Child’s Garden Of Grass is an expanded audio
companion to Jack Margolis and Richard Clorfene’s book of
the same name. Radio legend Ron Jacobs suggested the
spoken-word adaptation to Elektra head Jac Holzman, who
loved the idea. Margolis was hired to do the writing and
members of The Firesign Theater, among others, to do
the voice work.

What resulted was a clever compendium on the science,
history, and culture of marijuana. Within Garden’s
parody of a painfully polite instructional record
(you know, the ones that taught kids of the ’50s and
’60s to be upstanding citizens) are dryly comic sketches
that surely had a hand in shaping the stoned genius
of Cheech & Chong.
So if your still a full blown stoner, a casual stoner,
maybe you use to smoke but quit a long time ago or you
smoked but never inhaled or maybe you never indulged.
You will enjoy this show. I also added great
related tunes throughout this 4 POT series along with
other great comedy bits and sound bites.

For you people that’s been looking for more sound clips
of WBCN besides the 4-Day Special.
Well I have to say you hit paydirt here,
and it’s a long one. ( 73 Minutes )
We are going to listen to 3 out of 4 phases of WBCN.

The first section is with Charles “Very Laidback” Laquidara
playing pretty things with great vintage BCN commercials,
from back in 1970. Songs have been re-recorded to
give you the best possible sound.

2nd section is from the 80’s in which Charles gives us
a Mattress Milestone. I happen to be in the studio that
day with Charles and requested that song by People
in 1983. We argue on who did that song originally.
He said The Zombies and I said People.
He was right. What I can’t believe is that I never heard it
by the Zombies until that year. In my defense the Zombies
did not chart with that single but People did.

Section with The Byrds is from 1986, during WBCN’s
28th Birthday Show.
And of course we move to 2009 during the 4-Day closing
celebration show with Hardy & guest. 

I also want to say Thanks for the compliments
I been getting from BCN fans and BCN’s Alumni’s 
for putting this all together and on the web. It’s
the least I can do for a station along with
WBRU in Providence, WNEW in New York and WMMR
in Philly that actually shape my life is some ways.

This podcast features Adam 12’s last day on the air
along with WBCN’s last day. 

Don’t forget segments with this symbol  (*)
was not part of the 4 day Goodbye series. It’s just a little
of added bonus from my collection from the past from cassette
or from the web elsewhere. Also on these latest sound bites I
seem to have lost some of the sound qualities that I collected
back in 2009. My screwup of course. Didn’t follow through
on the downloading and checking the sound quality of this segment
of the show. I also was unable to reload from the web and
make better adjustments. The web site which featured all of
the complete bites from the entire 4 days seems to be gone
into the internets black hole. So as of today I guess,
this is the only place to enjoy this special program.
Again sorry for the lost of the sound quality. Past BCN episodes
quality was very good - Now it’s fair.

Believe me, nobody is as pissed off in this world than I am.
Hopefully in the near future the sound will be upgraded.
Somebody is cyberspace should have these MP3’s the way
it should be. (Very Good Quality).

during the month of January 2011. Another one of the
compilations I am very proud of. This one features great
deep tracks by Tom Petty, Black Sabbath, the late
Captain Beefheart and the late Gerry Rafferty.
I even place the announcement from Monday Night Football
from Cosell & Gifford, on the shooting of John Lennon, during
the game. Also great tuneage with newer material by Fink,
along with a uncut / unedited version (Rated R) of
Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons.

This podcast features a great interview from Adam 12 with
Jerry Goodwin, once the host of WBCN’s, Duke Of Madness Show.

Jerry’s voice was a staple of radio for over forty years
with stops in Dallas, Miami, Detroit, and Boston. He is
famous for his “Duke of Madness” character heard for many
years on Detroit and Boston radio. He is a member in good
standing with the New England Media Gang and in 2005 was
recognized by the Detroit radio community as one of Detroit’s
rock radio “Legends”. As a member of SAG, he has performed
in many films and TV shows produced in and around the
New England area. As a member of Actors Equity, he has twice
been awarded the “Best Performance” award by the
Boston Theatre Critics. He is presently doing character voices
for numerous CD- ROM games and holds character voice seminars
three times a year for Chart Productions in Boston. Besides
holding memberships in the Screen Actors Guild and the
Actors Equity Association, he is also a member of
The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists
and a charter member of Stage Source of Boston.

something about this song I love. Even though I am not a
fan of rap or very heavy metal, there is a great presence
