ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE SOUNDS OF PETS PT.2 END

Did I mention Paul McCartney has said the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds was the driving force for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, lol?
He also has said God Only Knows is the best song ever written.
We continue with the other side of the album.
And in the interest of aural purity, I want you to know that I played the vinyl mono version of Pet Sounds for these two parts- the way Brian Wilson intended it to be heard.
Enjoy!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING JOHN LENNON PT.1

Last week we did George Harrison, this week it is John Lennon’s turn.
As you should know, he was shot and killed on Dec.8, 1980.
I was looking for a way to open this show, when those “You Are Here” signs occured to me.
Everybody has to be somewhere, so you are here!
I have some rare and unusual Lennon things, in this chapter going back to his Beatle days.
Included is a version of his Norwegian Wood, in which George first unveiled his sitar playing to us.
You’ll hear John and Paul, but George is playing those SITAR chords on GUITAR.
We’ll have some older Beatle things as well.
I’ll tell you about what some of John’s last day was like.
And you’ll hear a very interesting story from George Martin about the animal sound effects on Good Morning Good Morning from Sgt. Pepper, and what the order of succession of them was supposed to represent.
Then I will play you just the isolated animal effects!
Speaking of animals, a Walrus counts, right?
We will close this one out with another isolated bit, this time that radio broadcast of Shakespeare’s King Lear that John used in…well, you know!
Hope you enjoy this one- it was a lot of fun for me to get to play these things for more than just the people who come over to my house.
There will be another episode on Mr. Lennon shortly.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE:THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.6

Before moving on with this chapter of Space, I owed you some ID’s from the previous episode.
The debt will be paid.
And a Shoutout to my buddy Mike Hennessy, for sending me a clean CD copy of a song I only had on vinyl- thanks, pal.
Some more info about our astronauts you may not have known- they had some difficulty getting back in the module with 2 boxes of more than 48 pounds of lunar surface material.
Wait till you hear some of the equipment they tossed out, had to throw away, to make the module lighter for the trip home.
And Aldrin accidentally broke the circuit breaker switch to the MAIN engine for liftoff to get back home.
Nice going Buzz!
But the day was saved with a common item and some good old American ingenuity!
Back to our Proprietary Moon songs, I have a song Johnny Cash and Paul McCartney wrote together while on vacation in Jamaica.
We’ll hear them sing it together.
Now with the sorry state of today’s radio, where else can you hear stuff like that but here at Rockollections?
Then I’ll go Cajun with a great, underrated singer/songwriter, followed by a terrific live rocker by a long lasting band.
Now, I should point out that poetic license allows me to play Moon songs wherein the Moon mentioned could be the name of a bar or a whorehouse.
Where did I put that damned poetic license anyway, lol?
There was one I couldn’t resist playing, that would make my Mom proud. It was # 2 in 1956 amidst all the Elvis and others, as Rock & Roll was starting to really take over the charts.
Don’t get me wrong though. My Mom LOVED Elvis! AND Rock & Roll!
Our astronauts take off leaving behind monitoring devices, an American flag and a plaque.
And to end this one, I thought it might be interesting to play five pieces of music…all instrumentals…that should trigger a mental image in your mind of things relating to Space.
No lyrics, no spoken words!
Let’s see if it works.
More Space coming.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN PT.2 2006 VERSION
I will now continue with the 2006 show I did, and a good time to point out that in 2007 I did full shows for EACH of them. You can hear them here by simply scrolling back on the words “previous posts”.
And also to announce there will be another new George & John show within the next few days, from this year 2008.
While most were watching Monday Night Football, I remember I was watching a hockey game (it’s a BETTER game!) on TV with a buddy when the phone rang and another friend told me John was shot.
I quickly put the stereo on to WNEW-FM, then the best rock station in the world, and Vin Scelsa was playing Springsteen’s “Jungleland”.
My heart sank, I knew instinctively we had lost him!
In this episode, I decided to play songs ABOUT John- as a little cottage industry has sprung up regarding that. And as it turned out, I didn’t have enough time to even play what I brought with me.
I remarked that there was a great shortage of songs about George Harrison or his death. None really. Maybe that is because it didn’t come so suddenly and in such a violent fashion.
But with intentional irony, I mentioned even George had written a song for John, and of course we will open with that.
I think you will hear some very interesting things here. George Martin’s comments on John’s death. A Letter To John written and read by Paul McCartney at Lennon’s induction ceremony to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, and of course the song he wrote for John. An underrated song by Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead, that has never gotten any airplay, and includes John Lennon and others.
And the other usual surprises I hope you have come to expect.
Rest in peace, George and John. We are diminished by your absence. Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ODDS AND ENDS VOL.1- PT.2

Finishing up with our first Odds & Ends, after a few songs for Heather, I’ll open with one for Paul should he decide to get married again, by a Dutch group called Smyle that had the Beatle sound down pat- especially the John Lennon voice.
I have never wanted Rockollections to be labeled an Oldies show, or a Classic Rock one.
Especially in the Theme shows, if I play an old record, I am using it in a contemporary way.
Besides, some of the older music I play was NEVER played on the radio at all- so throw the Classic tag away.
I just play what I consider the best or most interesting songs I can think of, irregardless of when it was made!
And I have nothing against new music- except maybe that most of it sucks, lol!
I wanna play 3 new songs for you though.
One each by the G-Men, Amer Diab and Mark Wayne Glasmire (and I had fun with his triple name, lol!).
Give a listen and see what you think.
They were the ones I chose that day, and there are more than 3 new songs I enjoy- just want to make that clear to any folks that think I am not open-minded.
The song by Glasmire is about a relationship that has a chance at getting back together.
Made me think of a song by the Del Fuegos, but with less of a chance at reconciliation in it.
After the new stuff, I must say it IS still fun to play the old ones, and I will continue to do so!
So I will end with first, a Chiffons number you should know- but without any MUSIC!
And lastly, Brian Wilson with his daughters, singing a song that tells me I should do these Odds & Ends more often.
Enjoy!
Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ODDS AND ENDS VOLUME 1- PT.1

After all those Flowers & Gardens & things, I thought I’d take a Personal Day.
Just grabbed some Odds & Ends in the form of CD’s and records and brought them in to the station.
I said to myself, let’s really go free-form and see what happens.
I must thank my pal, Mike Hennessy, for the opening song of the day.
He sent it to me, I didn’t even know it existed, and a perfect fit.
Nice pickup Mickster!
Then a song specifically for Odds & Ends.
After that, something that has been nagging me.
That whole Paul McCartney/Heather Mills divorce.
As I say in the show, I think more people are sympathetic to Paul, and regard Heather as something of a gold-digger.
From the getgo, a song jumped out at me that summed up my feelings on the subject.
That led to another similar song, but the 1st one is the one that says it best for me.
It also occurred to me that McCartney has a song from a fairly recent album called From A Lover To A Friend.
Don’t think he’s going to be singing that too much in concert for a while, lol!
But I wanted to play something by Paul, so why not a very overlooked one that nobody plays anymore?
Probably because it is long, and that upsets radio nowadays- gets in the way of the commercials, and the DJ’s mindless chatter.
So a multi-tuned cut, a terrific example of McCartney the Prolific Tunesmith- songs tumbling together as if he couldn’t contain all the melodies in his head. (And the last in the bunch is my favorite!)
Engineer Ken said he hadn’t heard it in years, see if the same applies to you.
More Odds & Ends to follow- including some NEW music!
Mike
