ROCKOLLECTIONS: IT’S BLOOMING TIME PT.2

As we will throughout this series, I will flip Gardens and Flowers, so a couple of rockers about Flowers open this installment.
First one, Picking Wild Flowers- and anything wild is good!
The next one by the Talking Heads contained the Crossed F incident.
Although I am one of the most disorganized people I know, I can also be very picayune about certain things.
This I have always regarded as just a minor facet of my insanity, not a problem.
So upon realizing on my handwritten list of songs that I had not crossed the F in Flowers, thereby making it Tlowers, I rushed out to tell Engineer Ken.
Ken, the poor soul, thought something had gone terribly wrong, lol!
But that was enough to throw me into an embarrassed lather.
Taking a quick sedative, I was able to continue, lol!
Got a song for Mothers Day that fits our flora requirement- from a couple of tough dudes, Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings.
Returning to the subject of Gardens, there are lots of different kinds of Gardens.
I will open a set with a song that is NOT one of them (HUH?)!
But I later erroneously identified the singer as Loretta Lynn, and I should have said Lynn Anderson.
I always confuse the two…wonder why, lol?
Finally, we end this chapter with something we have known we have to do for decades- get back there to that Garden.
A very Happy Mothers Day to all those still with us, and loving remembrances to those who are not.
If you still have Mom, realize you are lucky, treasure the moments and tell her you love her!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A ROCKOLLECTIONS LOOK AT WOODSTOCK PT.4 FINAL

Beginning this our final look at the Woodstock Festival, I will again take you back to WNEW-FM.
In 1969, Rosko was still working the 7 to midnight shift there, so we will hear him briefly sell you on the Festival- followed by another report from their newsman Mike Eisgrau.
I thank Dennis Elsas again for these snippets, and he has a website www.denniselsas.com that is well worth visiting.
After that, the Band didn’t make onto that old original vinyl album, but we have them here.
A couple from them, starting with a song you should know by Johnny Cash, although I believe it was written by Lefty Frizzell.
I suppose I could look it up, but I am still lazy, lol!
So go ahead, you look it up!
And don’t forget, Woodstock was the Band’s neighborhood- they did Music From Big Pink there.
I’ll have a list of folks who either canceled or declined to play at Woodstock that I am sure you will find very interesting.
Some of the reasons are good ones, some are not.
More music, coming almost full circle, and finally, one of the guys who thought up Woosdstock had an idea as to how he wanted to end the Festival.
He couldn’t…but we can!
I hope you enjoyed our little look at that historic weekend.
Next, something completely different…that’s the plan anyway!
The audio clips used in this series were obtained from the archives of Dennis Elsas of WFUV, and they can be heard there along with much more, at Dennis’ website www.denniselsas.com.
I personally thank him for the memories.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE:THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.6

Before moving on with this chapter of Space, I owed you some ID’s from the previous episode.
The debt will be paid.
And a Shoutout to my buddy Mike Hennessy, for sending me a clean CD copy of a song I only had on vinyl- thanks, pal.
Some more info about our astronauts you may not have known- they had some difficulty getting back in the module with 2 boxes of more than 48 pounds of lunar surface material.
Wait till you hear some of the equipment they tossed out, had to throw away, to make the module lighter for the trip home.
And Aldrin accidentally broke the circuit breaker switch to the MAIN engine for liftoff to get back home.
Nice going Buzz!
But the day was saved with a common item and some good old American ingenuity!
Back to our Proprietary Moon songs, I have a song Johnny Cash and Paul McCartney wrote together while on vacation in Jamaica.
We’ll hear them sing it together.
Now with the sorry state of today’s radio, where else can you hear stuff like that but here at Rockollections?
Then I’ll go Cajun with a great, underrated singer/songwriter, followed by a terrific live rocker by a long lasting band.
Now, I should point out that poetic license allows me to play Moon songs wherein the Moon mentioned could be the name of a bar or a whorehouse.
Where did I put that damned poetic license anyway, lol?
There was one I couldn’t resist playing, that would make my Mom proud. It was # 2 in 1956 amidst all the Elvis and others, as Rock & Roll was starting to really take over the charts.
Don’t get me wrong though. My Mom LOVED Elvis! AND Rock & Roll!
Our astronauts take off leaving behind monitoring devices, an American flag and a plaque.
And to end this one, I thought it might be interesting to play five pieces of music…all instrumentals…that should trigger a mental image in your mind of things relating to Space.
No lyrics, no spoken words!
Let’s see if it works.
More Space coming.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE KINGSTON TRIO PT.1

This 4-part series may seem surprising- acoustic, a folk act, and from the 50’s & early 60’s!
But the Kingston Trio made their mark, I am a folkie and I get to pick, lol!
I will be taking an extensive look at the Trio, and delving deeply.
If I didn’t think you would enjoy it, I wouldn’t bother putting it up here.
And there is some interesting history connected to them.
Did you know that at the very first Grammys, they won one for Best Country & Western Song- there was no Folk category!
Wonder what Johnny Cash was doing that year?
While immensely popular with the public, they were villified by the folk purists because they dared to sing new songs, not just 200 year old ones!
At one point, they had 4 of the Top 10 albums on the charts.
So join me, as I play a certain song that was on our Summer Cruise, but this time with the old, calypso wording.
An African song, with a translation at the beginning, that became a huge hit by another group after they rocked it up..
And a Woody Guthrie song that sounds so different to hear by somebody other than the Weavers.
We’re just getting started!
