RockRoll360 #145 - A Child’s Garden Of Grass ( Pot 1 of 4 )

A Child's Garden Of Grass

That’s one small toke for man, and a giant toke for mankind.
Not only did the smoke linger over all things enlightened
and libidinal. Turns out its pseudo-scholarly study could
provide a laugh, as evidenced by this cult comedy classic
from 1971. A Child’s Garden Of Grass is an expanded audio
companion to Jack Margolis and Richard Clorfene’s book of
the same name. Radio legend Ron Jacobs suggested the
spoken-word adaptation to Elektra head Jac Holzman, who
loved the idea. Margolis was hired to do the writing and
members of The Firesign Theater, among others, to do
the voice work.

What resulted was a clever compendium on the science,
history, and culture of marijuana. Within Garden’s
parody of a painfully polite instructional record
(you know, the ones that taught kids of the ’50s and
’60s to be upstanding citizens) are dryly comic sketches
that surely had a hand in shaping the stoned genius
of Cheech & Chong.
So if your still a full blown stoner, a casual stoner,
maybe you use to smoke but quit a long time ago or you
smoked but never inhaled or maybe you never indulged.
You will enjoy this show. I also added great
related tunes throughout this 4 POT series along with
other great comedy bits and sound bites.

As Ben Harper sings :::

Herb the gift, from the Earth,
and what’s from the earth is of the greatest worth.
So before u knock it, try it first.
and you’ll see it’s a blessing and it’s not a curse.
If you don’t like my fire, then don’t come around,
cause I’m gonna burn one down.
Yes I’m gonna burn one.

This is the 4th generation of this compilation I
have made since the early 70’s, changes here and there.
The first two on cassette and the last two on two CD’s.
This last one I put together was compiled in February 2011.

OK Folks !!!!!!…… This is where I blow my own whistle.
This 4 Pot series is my work of art.

Enjoy and have a great hearty (LOL) laugh on me.

Now I’m happy to  present to you

ROCKOLLECTIONS: IT’S BLOOMING TIME PT.6

May Flowers Pt.6

I apologize for this, and let me clear up any confusion.
This series was done a few years ago, and it was in this week that Memorial Day fell- this year it is the last day of the month, Monday May 31st.
I didn’t want to go out of sequence.
So whatever I say about Memorial Day, please keep in your mind and hearts next week.
I am continuing our proposition that April Showers Bring May Flowers with something different this time, Trees!
Then a wonderful 2-song set, analogous to Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkees at that famous 60’s concert.
But reverse them- a pop song and a protest song- and I love them both.
One for the Flower Girl and one for the Flower Lady.
We will close this chapter out with a song that is within our Theme, and that many people may not realize is actually an anti-war song.
If the people in the world would only stop to really listen to the words, take them to heart, then maybe all nations could get along.
Probably a pipedream, since at any given time there is always some large or small war going on somewhere on this earth.
I guess we need the people who believe peace is possible as much as we need our warriors.
However, for Memorial Day, the weekend and the song is dedicated to our Soldier Heroes who have given their lives for these beloved United States.
The ultimate sacrifice, and we salute them for it.
Happy Memorial Day…next week…and please don’t forget to remember our brave Heroes!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: HEY HEY…THE MONKEES - PT.2 END

We are going to start this concluding chapter with my favorite Monkees song.
It took me years to realize I had one, lol!
We’ll talk a bit about them having Jimi Hendrix as an opening act- Engineer Ken was actually at the concert at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens.
Those teenybopper mothers were aghast.
So it seems that the Monkees were hipper than I gave them credit for.
During their 2nd season on TV they invited Frank Zappa and Tim Buckley on the show.
They were at the Monterey Pop Festival in ‘67, although they didn’t play.
So, I gotta give them credit, those things were cool.
In among the Monkees songs this time, I will play their last Top 20 song, and the original version by the Coasters- and I wonder how many people even knew there was a previous version.
And to take us out, another surprise.
A fun take on that favorite Monkees song of mine, by the writer of it.
I’ll bet you have never heard it!
This show turned out to be a lot of fun, as I suspected it would and how they usually are for me.
And I have revised my opinion of the Monkees.
They weren’t terribly important to Rock & Roll, but they were entertaining and valid.
Come hear for yourself!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A LOT MORE LITTLE PT.2 & ONE FOR INTERNATIONAL WHISTLERS WEEK

Little Richard actually started recording in the early 50’s, but had little success until he met producer Bumps Blackwell.

And even Blackwell at first treated him as a blues singer.

In fact, Richard was very capable singing blues- a point we will make with the first 2 songs of this chapter.

Also, because of the anti-rock & roll feelings of the period and what was called “race” music, many of Richard’s songs as well as those of Fats Domino, etc, were taken and sung by white artists.

Pat Boone being one that easily comes to mind, but you can’t really blame him. It made the songs more palatable to the radio stations and the record companies.

But Little Richard and the others would change that- and things would NEVER sound the same again!

I will play a few that you may or may not know, and a few that you have to know.

Little Richard Penniman, among his many accomplishments, took Billy Preston on a European tour, picked the Beatles for an opening act in England, and hired Jimi Hendrix for his band.

Maybe those things alone would qualify him for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame!

Closing this one out, I picked an oddball song from around the same time as Little Richard was hitting it big, to play for International Whistlers Week- which was this week.

No kidding, there is one- the last week of April!
