ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING GEORGE HARRISON & JOHN LENNON 2011 PT.1

It is that bittersweet time of year again.
Between the deaths of George Harrison and John Lennon- one by disease, the other murdered.
I hadn’t realized it was 10 years ago for George, he died on November 29th, 2001, and we here in New York were still reeling from the attacks of Sept.11th.
As is usual for these shows, I will try to play interesting things you may never have heard.
In this episode dedicated to George, I have a bare version, without the chorus, of a #1 Billboard song for him, followed by an answer song to it that came 35 YEARS later…and by another former Beatle!
Then a musical look at the friendship between George and Bob Dylan.
So if you were/are a fan of George Harrison, The Beatles or Bob Dylan, you should find something enjoyable and fascinating here.
Next up, John Lennon.

RockRoll360 #134 - Tin Pan Alley ( Part 2 )
Here is Part 2 from the compilation I put together
back in the year of 2005. Featured artist are
Renaissance, Rickie Lee Jones and from a Christian
rap artist Righteous B. Most likely, some of you are going
to say WTH, with the Righteous B song. But there is
something about this song I love. Even though I am not a
fan of rap or very heavy metal, there is a great presence
I get each and every time I listen to this song. Dark & earie like
the feeling I get when I watch those English action mob movies.
Enjoy the last show of 2010.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MUSIC FOR MONEY & THE FINANCIAL CRISIS PT.5

After some time away from it I am back on the Money & Financial Crisis case.
Since I last put out an episode, the Dow Jones dipped 1,000 points in about 20 minutes one day, Greece had to be bailed out (a freakin’ COUNTRY!), Spain’s rating has been downgraded, Ireland is in serious trouble, oil keeps spilling into the Gulf while BP & the Government, aka Dumb & Dumber, stand around with their thumbs up…well maybe their thumbs would be of better use plugging that pipe.
And we keep spending although we don’t have the money!
Things seem better to you?
Plus through all this there are still those entitled-mad people out there who can’t get enough for nothing.
We’ll take a musical look at Easy Money.
People have always attempted to acquire Easy Money- it is almost a time-honored tradition.
And at least it requires some thought, for chrissakes, lol!
During my time away from this series, I naturally thought of more songs, so the series will go a little longer.
I have a song in here by David Bromberg that he co-wrote with George Harrison- and I have always felt that is George at the end screaming in a high-pitched female-like voice.
Almost certainly, his recognizable guitar playing is on the record- although no credit is given on the jacket.
And that’s what I wanted to tell you.
I originally played the CD version of the song and something wasn’t right…it was different, not the way I remembered it.
So I dug out the old vinyl LP and went with the one that was comfortable to me.
Actually, I use my decades-old turntable frequently on this Rockollections thing, I just don’t bother to tell you, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FRAMPTON- HE’S ALIVE! PT.1

Peter Frampton was the lead guitarist with the old British group the Herd.
After that, he founded Humble Pie with Steve Marriot.
And he also did session work with some of the best, including George Harrison on All Things Must Pass.
It was at George’s sessions where he discovered his signature talk box.
He went solo in 1971, had minimal success, and in 1976 busted out of nowhere with his Frampton Comes Alive- the biggest selling live LP at the time! Now it is the 4th live bestseller.
I’ll play songs you don’t hear anymore, not only the ones the Classic Rock stations do- and some stuff from other albums.
But mainly it’ll be from that live album.
What is noticeable is the loudness of the audience (sounds like a firecracker goes off during one song), almost in some cases becoming a distraction.
I think it would have been tamped down today.
But it is without doubt one of the great live Rock & Roll albums of all time.
And Frampton just seemed more confident on stage, and the songs have a brightness not found on his studio albums.
Give a listen.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BILLY PRESTON, UNOFFICIAL 5TH BEATLE PT.1

After a dopey question from me, we open this show with a better question from Billy Preston.
Although he never quite answers it.
I’ll have some very interesting biography to share with you about Billy- and one of my off-the-cuff remarks that made me want to head for Outta Space.
It still strikes me funny though, lol!
After listening to tapes made during the Beatle sessions, it may surprise you just how close Billy Preston came to being officially the 5th Beatle!
Going to play 2 songs next, one was on the Billboard charts at # 22 and the other # 62.
I will leave it to you to judge the better song, but my feelings will be known.
Did you know that the first recorded version of My Sweet Lord was on a Billy Preston album?
Produced by his good friend George Harrison. And Billy appeared on all of George’s 1970’s albums, at least.
Although ill himself, he took George’s passing very hard.
We will close out this opening chapter (of two) with one of Billy’s remarkable performances at the Concert For George Harrison.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING JOHN LENNON PT.2 END

We continue our celebration of John Lennon’s life.
Last week we talked about George Harrison’s last song, Horse To Water.
But what was John Lennon’s?
I will play 2 versions of what is commonly regarded as his final song, one a rough cut by him and the other by Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Carpenter does such a good job on it, I feel she took it away from John and made it her own!
Back to his Beatle days after that, with a take that sounds very Buddy Holly to me.
Engineer Ken and I decided to go back to the Mind Games album to finish things off.
There are so many good songs on that LP that were never heard, as the radio playlists began to get even tighter.
So to rectify that a little, we will hear Tight A$ (that’s right, no typo), a catchy rocker called Only People, Out Of The Blue and finish with One Day At A Time- the best way to live your life.
If those song titles do not sound familiar to you, well, I rest my case about commercial radio!
And that will do it for George and John this year.
Hope you got something out of it.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING JOHN LENNON PT.1

Last week we did George Harrison, this week it is John Lennon’s turn.
As you should know, he was shot and killed on Dec.8, 1980.
I was looking for a way to open this show, when those “You Are Here” signs occured to me.
Everybody has to be somewhere, so you are here!
I have some rare and unusual Lennon things, in this chapter going back to his Beatle days.
Included is a version of his Norwegian Wood, in which George first unveiled his sitar playing to us.
You’ll hear John and Paul, but George is playing those SITAR chords on GUITAR.
We’ll have some older Beatle things as well.
I’ll tell you about what some of John’s last day was like.
And you’ll hear a very interesting story from George Martin about the animal sound effects on Good Morning Good Morning from Sgt. Pepper, and what the order of succession of them was supposed to represent.
Then I will play you just the isolated animal effects!
Speaking of animals, a Walrus counts, right?
We will close this one out with another isolated bit, this time that radio broadcast of Shakespeare’s King Lear that John used in…well, you know!
Hope you enjoy this one- it was a lot of fun for me to get to play these things for more than just the people who come over to my house.
There will be another episode on Mr. Lennon shortly.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.3

There was a Captain Video years ago, so this is Captain Audio speaking…
We will continue our journey into space with some more songs about the Moon, as this whole series was inspired by the 1st Moon Landing on July 20, 1969.
Now, everybody knows that George Harrison, with the Beatles, did the great Here Comes The Sun on the Abbey Road album.
But I am sure fewer people are aware that he recorded a song called Here Comes The Moon some years later, as a solo artist.
I will open with that.
And one Beatle calls for another, this one doing a great flip side of a single.
Then we will turn our attention to some historical clarification.
It appears all these years later that Neil Armstrong correctly spoke, as he has insisted, those first words on the moon.
There is recent evidence supporting that he properly said, “One small step for (A) man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Without that crucial “A”, it is redundant- and he was to some extent criticized for it.
Wonder what I would have said?
Probably something along the lines of “Holy crap!”- but not precisely “crap”!
Next we will take a brief look at the effects the Full Moon has on people- and watch out for those shadows too.
Then, the Moon can fill some folks up with so much love, they want to dance by the light of it.
So two songs, coincedentally both from 1961- the first of which just plain makes me ROCK!
Oh man, it makes ME wanna dance around!
In closing, we will note that Armstrong said he had no trouble moving around up there. Despite being 1/6 Earth’s gravity, it was easier than the simulations he had been put through.
And it is now official- this will be the longest and most ambitious Theme series I have ever attempted.
As seemingly endless as Space itself…oh I hope you don’t really feel that way, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: IN THEIR OWN WORDS- REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN 2008 PT.2 END

Odd, how life and history affect us.
To one generation, today Dec. 7th brings memories of the bombing of Pearl Harbor- and they can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when they got the news.
To many of the next couple of generations, they can do likewise for tomorrow Dec. 8th, when they heard of the senseless killing of John Lennon.
So now it is John Lennon’s turn In Their Own Words- and of course music too!
For some reason, all Lennon’s appearances on WNEW-FM are highlighted…except this one.
It took place on May 30, 1969 when he phoned Rosko (Bill Mercer), who was then on the air.
What followed was a far more incisive interview than when he talked to the others.
John talks about being a tough kid, not wanting to hear You Can’t Do That.
Then again, I didn’t like hearing that either, lol!
Oh, I mistakenly said it was a live track. Wrong, sorry- just made to sound that way. But a good remix!
John talks more about being a troublemaker with a chip on his shoulder.
But he found his peace.
Rosko asks him flat-out about his use of Christ in The Ballad Of John & Yoko, and you may be surprised with his answer.
Some more music and conversation, and I will close this year’s remembrance with a beautiful song by John.
Let’s all meet here next year, and I’ll have some more off the beaten path recordings by two guys who meant an awful lot to me!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: IN THEIR OWN WORDS- REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN 2008 PT.1

Well this was an easy show for me.
I just let George Harrison and John Lennon do the talking- so In Their Own Words is what we’ll call it.
In this first half, George talks about the first song he wrote.
During the Beatles’ bloody Let It Be sesions, they were being filmed and there was a soundtrack, so he was caught on audio quitting the band.
When I first met my buddy Mike Hennessy, it was in a bar, and one of the songs on the jukebox he was playing was Blue Jay Way.
I thought that was very cool, not your casual Beatle song nor fan, and we are still pals to this day!
I have a different version of Blue Jay Way, Take 3- significantly different.
You’ll hear George’s appearance on Rutland Weekend Television…as a pirate!
And about his involvement with those Monty Pythoners.
Incidentally, that Rutland was the inspiration for the Rutles- that wonderfully funny parody of the Beatles.
Lots of rough mixes of George’s songs, and there was his love for the ukelele.
We will have Mr. Lennon up next!

ROCKOLLECTIONS - REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN PT.1 2006 VERSION
Here is the 2006 version of the annual remembrance of George and John.
As I note in the opening, this is that odd time where we are between the deaths of George Harrison, November 29, 2001 and John Lennon, December 8, 1980- two former Beatles.
If you had the unparalleled joy of growing up with the Beatles, as they grew with us, and watching them develop into the what I will always call the Greatest Group That Ever Existed, then you know the sadness and mourning the loss of those 2 lads brought us.
And still exists to this day.
Thankfully, that negative can never approach the joy and pure fun their music contributed to our lives.
They were on Mt. Olympus, and we all were all happily looking up to them, eager for their next album and lesson therein. The Beatles spoke to us individually, yet we were unified in our reverence for them. They changed the music for the better, and made us better in the process.
That is why the loss of any of the Fab Four will always be personal.
I can honestly say- no Beatles, then I don’t love music the way I do!
In my constant effort to bring a different angle to these shows, in Part One we will concentrate on George and his legal problems, using music to do so.
Beginning with, in my opinion, the unfair lawsuit brought against him for plagiarism, and continuing with all the suing going on over the Beatles breakup.
You will find that George had a biting, sarcastic wit that could be dead on- and very much in evidence in some of these songs. We will take an entirely different look at John in Part Two.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.4 CONCLUSION

The final chapter of the Wilburys that Travel.
Heading right to the music, I’ll open open with Inside Out- the state of the world today, or maybe just the state of my life, lol!
Getting back to that question of why Vol.3 followed Vol.1, the official word was that Vol.3 was recorded by a different group of brothers.
All the remaining members, Dylan, Lynne, Harrison, Petty, took DIFFERENT Wilbury names.
In other words, a Vol.2 could NEVER be done, out of respect for the death of Roy Orbison.
Moving on with the music, got one for my inevitable trip to the Poor House.
The Traveling Wilbury’s CD’s were out of print for many years, mainly because George Harrison owned the rights, and died before he could renew them.
I have an outtake by George. A terrific song called Maxine.
I’ll be quoting from a very perceptive article by a guy named Phil Reed.
Then a song that may have slipped through the cracks, the Travelers contributed the title song on the children’s album, the Romanian Angel Appeal Benefit Album.
Engineer Ken accidentally played Roy Orbison’s last posthumous hit instead.
But we got it all straightened out.
I’ll take it all home with another outtake that is so good I can’t believe it wasn’t released- appropriately called I’m Gone (and I am in more ways than one, lol!)
Just a great rocker!
I owe a great debt of thanks to my pal Mike Hennessy for his contributions to this series.
So I do so publicly- Thanks Mickster!
This last episode is a good one. Hope you like it.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.3

Sorry for the delay, I had computer problems- this baby has been ready to go for days.
And it is a STRONG episode!
I’ll start with the Wilburys trading vocals on the opening track to their Vol.3.
What happened to Vol.2?
Well, there are 3 theories.
One, it is more of that quirky Wilbury humor.
Two, Vol.2 is now considered to be Tom Petty’s album Full Moon Fever- produced by Jeff Lynne and featuring Lynne, Harrison and Orbison (only one missing was Dylan).
Three, it had to do with the loss of Roy Orbison, and I will have more about that next chapter.
At any rate, I thought I’d play a cut from the Petty LP, dedicated to the approaching anniversary of 9/11.
When I was preparing these shows, I remember hearing a Wilbury song and thinking it could have been done by the Beatles, or Buddy Holly, or the Diamonds or a group like that from the 50’s.
I will play that one, and follow it with a doowop style song from Bob Dylan called 7 Deadly Sins- that’s right, count ‘em- 7.
Though it is a wonderful album, Orbison was sorely missed on Vol.3.
And during the period between the 2 albums, they could have called themselves the Traveling Circus.
They singly or in groups appeared on other people’s records.
I have a great example with George Harrison playing slide guitar on the album Duane Eddy, His Twangy Guitar & The Rebels.
It is an instrumental called The Trembler, and comes with a VERY interesting story about how George brought it to the session, having to do with Ravi Shankar.
After that, an outtake of a song you should know, by the boys and Del Shannon, rumored to take Roy Orbison’s place in the group.
Strangely, he instead took his own life.
We will go out on a happier note, with a great instrumental (?) version of New Blue Moon, that was a B-side to Wilbury singles TWICE!
As I said, a STRONG episode, and an equally good one coming next to close the series out.
Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.2

As I move on with the Traveling Wilburys, you are forewarned to get pen and paper ready, as I will be running down the “brothers” roster later in this episode.
Gonna start off with one that has Roy Orbison doing the lead vocal, and stacks right up there with all the great music he has done before.
Roy hadn’t had a real hit in decades, and joining the Wilburys helped him launch a career revival.
Unfortunately for him, he died only mere months after the recording of the Wilburys album, and his own solo one containing his last legitimate hit!
If you have seen the video for End Of The Line, you know the elegantly understated tribute to Orbison in it.
Outtakes have popped up over the years, so I will play a couple of his classic hits re-recorded with the Traveling guys.
Although the band was known for trading vocals, we’ll hear a song with clear spiritual overtones from the very spiritual George Harrison.
And a feisty Bob Dylan, taking on Bruce Springsteen with Tweeter & The Monkey Man.
Mansion On The Hill, anyone? Or Jersey Girl? Maybe Thunder Road?
And don’t forget, I’ll have the actual breakdown of comical names these Rock & Roll giants chose for that debut album.
We’ll end this one with my, and I am sure many other people’s, favorite Traveling Wilburys song.
To be continued…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.1

I am going to start this whole thing out rockin’- and rightly so.
All things considered, the Traveling Wilburys were probably the greatest supergroup ever!
Certainly the greatest unoffical supergroup- they didn’t even use their real names.
But we know who they are.
The group came into existence because George Harrison needed a B-side for a single.
And what a freaky way it all fell into place, which I will most assuredly be talking about.
They did that B-side (ultimately replaced by another song), but the result was way too good to toss away as filler.
And they had so much fun recording that one song, they decided to record a full album together using pseudonyms as half-brothers, instead of their real names.
Those real names were, and get this, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne of ELO, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.
What a lineup- it’s Murderer’s Row!
As I said, I will open up rocking and go from there.
Included in this chapter, is a cutely sexy song by Dylan using car jargon- Bob has never been so lecherous and funny at the same time.
And if you listen closely near the end, he sings what was ALMOST the band’s name.
Of course, I will be telling you how they happened to pick their name, Traveling Wilburys.
And how it relates to what I have named this Series.
If you are a rocker, these Pods will be fun.
