RockRoll360 #157- Chalk Dust Torture (Part 1)
God, it’s been a while since my last post.
Been very busy with this and that.
I also have to put a little laziness into
the mix also.
Well, two events since our last
meeting. The Boston Bruins winning the Stanley
Cup for the 1st time since 1972.
Boston has won 7 titles in 10 years.
To add to that all of 4 major sport teams
have won a title. The Patriots (02,04,05),
Red Sox (04,07), Bruins (2011), and Celtics (08).
No other city has done that.
And on a sad note the loss of Clarence Clemons of
Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. Both
news items are noted here in this show.
Here’s the latest compilation I put together
here during the month of June of 2011.
This one features great deep track by
The Pretenders. A couple of new songs by
The Cars & Reba McEntire. Also got turned on by
a couple gems by The Violent Femmes and
Big Head And The Monsters, thanks to FreeForm WBCN.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BACK TO BACK TO SCHOOL 2010 PT.2 END

I am going to open up this last half of Back To Back To School with a question.
A question regarding Teachers who use propaganda to brainwash kids, and although the song is from 1964, the situation has never been worse than it is today.
Then it is on to how maybe the reason I hated school was because when you think about it, the whole day for a kid revolves around it. and being told what to do.
So quickly the Rebel comes into our show, not unlike myself, making the Teachers mad.
Got a few tunes about the opposite sex attraction, and a terrific but obscure song by Chuck Berry that demonstrates the awful situation of how, if you go to school with your girlfriend, after you break up you still have to see her everyday,
I wanted to play another interpretation of that song written by Graham Parker, so I did.
But by a group this time, and live.
Finally, if you are anything like me, there was only one song to end with.
And that’s the one I chose!
The cartoon above is a hint, lol!
Thankfully, for many of us, all this School stuff is from a distance.
If you are living it, I am sorry for you, lol!
My computer needs a tuneup or more, so I will be back when I am able.
Until then, enjoy the music and keep on rockin’!
Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: AMBOY DUKES PT.2 & MLK DAY!

Back with some more of the Amboy Dukes, Ted Nugent’s old group- and it WAS Ted’s group.
He had to keep bailing the members out of jail, booked their concerts, took care of the finances, drove their truck, made hotel reservations, etc.- all while fighting with them!
I am going to play you a hippie classic- a terrific song, complete with sitar, with just the right title for that period, Psalm Of Aftermath.
Feeling like a babysitter, Ted left the group and came back with a great solo album.
I have the band doing a great old Chuck Berry chestnut, complete with a series of those false endings groups sometimes do.
Today, Ted Nugent is into so many things I couldn’t list them all.
He even has an internet column I enjoy.
So I thought I’d play something solo by him you might know.
Finally, in honor of Monday being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, that will be duly noted.
Talk about dreams…!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BRENDA LEE PT.2 END

I will continue with Brenda Lee- and she has the bona fides, she is in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
But it took her 11 years to get in, the longest time for any artist to make it.
And further indication of the R&R Hall Of Fame’s virtually meaningless existence.
Last chapter, I forewarned men to have a recording device ready.
Right off the bat, it will be time to use it.
And all in good fun, lol!
It’s Brenda’s signature song and hit # 1.
Followed by the earliest song I could find by her, from 1956, a phone number missing a number!
I’ll flip back and forth in this episode with that rough voice of her’s and some ballads- Number one’s and Top Ten songs.
In the early 60’s over in England, her opening act was a then little-known Liverpool group, the Beatles.
They went on to considerable fame also!
For some reason, Brenda Lee was always much more popular in the UK, even having a couple of Top Ten hits there that weren’t even released as singles here in the U.S.
She could rock, sing ballads and combined sexiness with innocence.
It’s a shame Brenda Lee is not better remembered.
But you may be surprised to know she has been mentioned in SONGS, by Chuck Berry, Burton Cummings…even Golden Earring’s Radar Love!
Last week we ran late, this time we had a little bit of time left over.
Not enough for a song, but enough to hear me try to smoothly stretch it to the end, LOL!
Hope you will hold Brenda Lee in higher regard now that you’ve gotten to hear what she could do.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A FAT GUY PT.2

I will continue now with some Mountain proper.
West and Pappalardi shared vocals, and they added Corky Laing on drums.
Theme For An Imaginary Western was written by Cream’s Jack Bruce- hell, the vocal even SOUNDS like Jack Bruce!
And that will not be the end of a Leslie West/Jack Bruce connection.
Mountain’s 4th live concert was at Woodstock ‘69!
And they wrote a song about it- For Yasgur’s Farm.
My favorite album by Mountain is Nantucket Sleighride.
I will have some trivia about just what a Nantucket Sleighride exactly is, dating back to the whaling ship days, plus info about my friend who was a descendant of Owen Coffin on Nantucket Island.
Then the band doing an old Chuck Berry chestnut.
I will end this episode with a song for Father’s Day.
OK, so? It is dated. Check out early if you want, lol!
More Mountain ahead, so be on the lookout.
