RockRoll360 #162 - Goodbye to WBCN (Part.47)

It’s been almost two years ago August 12, 2009, since the
last words were uttered from WBCN 104.1 before
the change to WBMX 104.1, here in Boston.
The words of course was BCN’s Cosmic Muffin, the late
Darrel Martinie mentioning “Over & Out”
This is also my last podcast featuring
the “4 Day Goodbye To WBCN” series.
This is somewhat ( see below ! ) the end of a great
revolutionary radio station. It has been fun and very
reminiscing to me placing these shows on podcast.
In the future I’m sure I’ll be featuring more
tid bits of BCN from my achieves and of course
what I can find on the web. But until then it’s
all over. Enjoy more extras on this show
I found and then the last 20 minutes of
WBCN FM 104.1 as we know it.
Bradley J.did a outstanding job of ending the final minutes
with “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd ” and
I have to a great nod to Juanita’s Big Goodbye Song
“That’s Life ” by Frank Sinatra.
Of course I mentioned above “somewhat”. I need to
remind you you can still find WBCN The Modern Years
for you younger listeners - Nice Inch Nails to Nirvana to
Ozzy on WBZ 98.5 HD-2,
and of course my favorite The American Revolution.
WBCN anything go’s Free Form WBCN Radio with a very
eclectic format on WZLX 100.7 HD-3. The legendary
WBCN was known for its anything-goes spirit. Rock,
blues, jazz, politics… WBCN didn’t have rules.
The “Free Form” nature of the station is
back as WBCN’s first rock Program Director
Sam Kopper brings the spirit of the original WBCN
into 2011. He’s been working very hard on trying to
Keep this station afloat. He even purchased a bus
to promote Free Form WBCN.Please support his hard work.
WBCN Free Form often goes live Mon-Fri and Sundays
from 11 AM to 2 PM.
Both of these stations also can
be found on WBCN.COM to play on any of your media players.
If you have been enjoying this series and faithfully been
listening, I Thank You & Keepa Rockin.
Enjoy The Show !

RockRoll360 #153 - Goodbye to WBCN (Part.44)

Mark Parenteau-Charles Laquidara -
and Sue Specker at the WBCN strike of 1979.
In 1979, WBCN was purchased by
Hemisphire Broadcasting who let go several
longtime employees who they determined
“non-essential.” Hemisphere president Michael Wiener
fired 19 of 37 employees and refused to deal with
the union. He wanted to trim”excess fat” while
keeping the “core of the station.”News
director/dissector Danny Schechter was out the door,
but folks like Charles Laquidara, Mark Parenteau,
Matt Siegel, Tracy Roach, and Tony Berardini were kept.
This set off a local controversy in Boston that
resulted in the entire airstaff walking
off the air striking in protest. During the walkout,
WBCN stayed on the air with substitute DJs imported
from several out-of-town Hemisphire sister stations.
The protest got local media coverage and the attention
of several well-known Boston-based music acts,
including The Cars, Aerosmith, and Boston, who got
behind the protest. When several large advertisers
pulled spots, and the union filed a challenge to
Hemisphere’s license, pointing out that by forcing
the staff out on strike, Hemisphere had created a
situation where it couldn’t provide the public service
it was required to, Hemisphire relented, the fired
staffers were rehired and the DJs went back on the air.
The protest was over. (It was also rumored that
Hemisphere’s FCC lawyers had vetoed the course of
action advised by Hemisphere’s labor lawyers.)
On March 9, three weeks into the strike, Hemisphere
agreed to the last of the union’s terms and the strikers
voted to return on Monday, March 12 of 1979, just
in time to celebrate their 11th Birthday on the 15th.
Charles Laquidara played “Superman” by the Kinks
back to back for an entire show in celebration.
More at the door here at 104.
Here’s a collection of material I gathered back
the day the strike ended from a cassette I
named at the time WBCN’s Back !
Except for the 1st song by Sass, the original
playlist of songs from that broadcast has been
segued into re-recordings to ensure a
better sound quality for this podcast of one of the greatest
moments in progressive radio rock history.

RockRoll360 #141 - Goodbye to WBCN (Part.40)

Amy Brooks & Hardy
For you people that’s been looking for more sound clips
of WBCN besides the 4-Day Special.
Well I have to say you hit paydirt here,
and it’s a long one. ( 73 Minutes )
We are going to listen to 3 out of 4 phases of WBCN.
The first section is with Charles “Very Laidback” Laquidara
playing pretty things with great vintage BCN commercials,
from back in 1970. Songs have been re-recorded to
give you the best possible sound.
2nd section is from the 80’s in which Charles gives us
a Mattress Milestone. I happen to be in the studio that
day with Charles and requested that song by People
in 1983. We argue on who did that song originally.
He said The Zombies and I said People.
He was right. What I can’t believe is that I never heard it
by the Zombies until that year. In my defense the Zombies
did not chart with that single but People did.
Section with The Byrds is from 1986, during WBCN’s
28th Birthday Show.
And of course we move to 2009 during the 4-Day closing
celebration show with Hardy & guest.
I also want to say Thanks for the compliments
I been getting from BCN fans and BCN’s Alumni’s
for putting this all together and on the web. It’s
the least I can do for a station along with
WBRU in Providence, WNEW in New York and WMMR
in Philly that actually shape my life is some ways.
Enjoy and Rock On.

Finding more material on tape and I would also want to thank Charles Laquidara for giving me permission to use his ”Back To The Future Show” from April 1986. I been editing the segments for this show and future shows to add along with The Goodbye to WBCN Special. I’m predicting this series will take us all to the month of August 2010. The time of the year where we here in New England lost WBCN 104.1 a year. Let’s see what happens. I personally lost the Real WBCN during the year of 1991.

RockRoll360 #050 - Fresh Air - (Part 1)

Ok - Time for a little fun - another special program !
When progressive radio appeared on the airwaves from coast to coast around 1967 throught the early 70’s, it was like a breath of fresh air that filled our mind and spirit with comedy, music and even maintained a strong counterculture reputation. It was a great moment in radio history for the baby boomers.
Let’s make believe we have gone back in time and
we are on a progressive radio time warp. Enjoy the way radio was,
very laid back with great tunes. I have some great moments with some of other
radio stations beside WBCN - Enjoy great progressive radio DJ’s-Scott Muni,
Tom Donohue and Malcolm-Gault Williams.

RockRoll360 - American Revolution: Beginnings of Underground Rock Radio WBCN Pt. 1

Hello Everybody - I’m the new kid on the block. Podcasting from the
City Of Woonsocket, Rhode Island up here in New England.
I would like to say thanks to Uncleshag & Mike Pell for posting my shows on WLSO.FM.
What you’re going to find on this Podcast is an Eclectic intelligent rock, programmed by Michael J. Andrade. Programming is a cross between
Classic Underground & AAA Radio format. You’ll find strange oddities whether it be sound bites, radio station I.D’s and jingles and comedy.
Sometimes there are a string of themed selections. Hopefully I can
keep the genuine expertise that Unc & Mike has and make you the audience keep coming back for more. Updates will most likely be on Tuesdays & Fridays
What else can I say? You will see I have a love for music 1929 through the years of 2009. I also have a love for radio - Especially the days of the classic Underground Rock Radio. So Enjoy, Pass, & Rock On.
I got to put aside the 360 Format for this one, because we are gonna visit the years 1968 & 1969 for the next 80 minutes with a program called An American Revolution. Here is a program I recorded way back off the airwaves March 15th,1988. WBCN was doing an anniversary show on the last 20 years BCN as we know it was on the air as a rock radio station. (Today its been 41 years and one month) Great stuff from this show which includes hippie laced radio commercials and of course the broadcast of the transition and first rock song played that night at 10PM.
A lot of great stories and clips and stories from the early days with Charles Laquidara ( your host & who was still on air with BCN in 1988 ) Tommy Hadges —– Joe Rogers aka. Mississippi Harold Wilson — Ken Shelton —- Eddie Gordesky Ron Della Chiesa —–Tammy Heidi —- Peter Wolf ——Frank Zappa —–Captain Squid —– Devine —– This show was originally broadcast and placed on cassette. I re-recorded / and segued the music from Cd’s to the original broadcast and put on to CD. Nobody likes that background hiss & static. The aircheck part of the show is really not that bad. Then I transfered to the MP3 format for this Podcast .
Music includes ::::: Crown Of Creation - Jefferson Airplane Itchycoo Park -The Small Faces I Feel Free - Cream Ballad Of A Thin Man - Bob Dylan Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan ( note to Charles >>>> Jimmy Page on Guitar not Jeff Beck ) Max Yasgur Going Up The Country - Canned Heat
Here’s a short story about WBCN’s beginings…. Before the middle 1960s, a radio station which was called WBCN played classical music exclusively. The call letters stood for the Boston Concert Network.
One of the on-air personalities at that time was Ron Della Chiesa, who also served as music host and program director. Della Chiesa is still active in classical music broadcasting on WGBH. The station slowly began to change to an ‘underground’ music format on the night of March 15, 1968. The first song played that evening to usher in the new format and slogan ‘American Revolution’ was “I Feel Free” by the rock group Cream. At first the new ‘ American Revolution’ format was only heard during the overnight hours, but by the summer of 1968 it encompassed the entire 24 hour programming day. As a part of their new format, WBCN began supporting non-mainstream investigative reporting and such novel concepts as a show oriented toward prison inmates, health warnings about the hazards of street drugs, and live updates on the traffic problems at Woodstock.
