RockRoll360 #157- Chalk Dust Torture (Part 1)

Chalk Dust Torture ( Pt.1)

God, it’s been a while since my last post.
Been very busy with this and that.
I also have to put a little laziness into
the mix also.
Well, two events since our last
meeting. The Boston Bruins winning the Stanley
Cup for the 1st time since 1972.
Boston has won 7 titles in 10 years.
To add to that all of 4 major sport teams
have won a title. The Patriots (02,04,05),
Red Sox (04,07), Bruins (2011), and Celtics (08).
No other city has done that.
And on a sad note the loss of Clarence Clemons of
Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. Both
news items are noted here in this show.
Here’s the latest compilation I put together
here during the month of June of 2011.
This one features great deep track by
The Pretenders. A couple of new songs by
The Cars & Reba McEntire. Also got turned on by
a couple gems by The Violent Femmes and
Big Head And The Monsters, thanks to FreeForm WBCN.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: EARTHY MANN PT.1

I am always honest with you.
So I must tell you that sometimes putting a Podcast up can be a royal pain in the ass!
That is the case with this one.
Not the content, but from a technical standpoint. It was a struggle.
If you only know Manfred Mann from the 60’s pop singles group, you will be very surprised by what he moved into as Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.
He headed in a much more “progressive” direction.
I’ll begin this with a Springsteen song and a classical piece of music they put lyrics to.
The results were big hits, one here and one in the UK.
Another song, Demolition Man, was a hit over there, and frankly I didn’t care for it.
But after repeated listenings for this show, it has grown on me- kinda like me on people…like a fungus, lol.
Got another Springsteen song after that, as Mann from his earliest days always had a keen ear for talented songwriters, and would adapt their songs to his style.
And it’s funny, sometimes hearing another artist do these songs you realize how GREAT Bruce was with those early lyrics. He came right out of the box running.
However, this is Manfred Mann’s Earth Band we are doing, and the spotlight is on them.
There will be a Part Two.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE SOUTHSIDE OF ASBURY PT.2 END

mp_ssj_2.jpg

First off, I just want to say that if I had access to the studio, I would have done one or more shows on Mothers this year.
I did a couple of them a few years ago, and if you do a Search or scroll Previous Posts here, you will find them.
A few more words about the Schaefer Festival Concerts, where I spent many a joyous summer night.
They were held at the Wollman Skating Rink, which was and still is, an outdoor ice skating rink in New York’s famous Central Park.
Since it is outdoors, obviously no skating in the summertime, and so folding chairs were put all around where the ice had been.
A wonderful, intimate setting to see some surprisingly big time artists!
Back to this found show on Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, a live song to open this chapter up, where Ronnie Spector formerly of the Ronettes made a guest appearance to duet with Johnny.
Sounding so right, and with that same distinctive voice!
Think I heard myself singing in the crowd on some of these songs.
Hey, you never know, lol!
We’ll hear what is considered the definitive version of Bruce Springsteen’s Hearts Of Stone, and a whole lot more.
Complete with a thoroughly fitting song to end with.
Happy Mothers Day to all who qualify!
Love ya Mom!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE SOUTHSIDE OF ASBURY PT.1

mp_ssj_1.jpg

This is the first “NEW” show I have put up in a while.

Although I can’t remember when I broadcast it, it was never put up for podcast, so here we go. For those following, my position on going back to the radio station remains unchanged, if I can’t play music, I don’t want to play at all (I have no interest in doing TALK radio!).

However, they have blinked first!

So we will see what happens, and maybe I return relatively soon.

In the meantime, we have Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, always 2nd after Springsteen to put forth a Jersey or Asbury Park sound.

I have seen these guys in concert maybe more than any other group, having gotten more freebie tickets for them than any other, lol!

Under Bruce’s long shadow, it was difficult for them to make their mark as proponents of Blue-Eyed Soul.

However many of their songs were written by Springsteen for them, including the great opening song.

They have always remained popular in my area, and I have always thought their music was fun- no pretense, just good old workmanlike rock & roll.

From a distance of years, I enjoyed poking fun at myself for having attended most of their concerts loaded, pie-eyed, shitfaced or any other slang term for drunk!

For those not from here, when I speak of the Schaefer Festival, Schaefer was a local beer!

So the perfect marriage- rock & roll, beer, and my ability to drink massive quantities of it, lol!

Give a listen to Part One of Johnny & The Jukes.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN PT.2 2006 VERSION

Mike Pell's Rockollections - Remembering George and John Part 2

I will now continue with the 2006 show I did, and a good time to point out that in 2007 I did full shows for EACH of them. You can hear them here by simply scrolling back on the words “previous posts”.
And also to announce there will be another new George & John show within the next few days, from this year 2008.

While most were watching Monday Night Football, I remember I was watching a hockey game (it’s a BETTER game!) on TV with a buddy when the phone rang and another friend told me John was shot.
I quickly put the stereo on to WNEW-FM, then the best rock station in the world, and Vin Scelsa was playing Springsteen’s “Jungleland”.
My heart sank, I knew instinctively we had lost him!
In this episode, I decided to play songs ABOUT John- as a little cottage industry has sprung up regarding that. And as it turned out, I didn’t have enough time to even play what I brought with me.
I remarked that there was a great shortage of songs about George Harrison or his death. None really. Maybe that is because it didn’t come so suddenly and in such a violent fashion.
But with intentional irony, I mentioned even George had written a song for John, and of course we will open with that.
I think you will hear some very interesting things here. George Martin’s comments on John’s death. A Letter To John written and read by Paul McCartney at Lennon’s induction ceremony to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, and of course the song he wrote for John. An underrated song by Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead, that has never gotten any airplay, and includes John Lennon and others.
And the other usual surprises I hope you have come to expect.
Rest in peace, George and John. We are diminished by your absence.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.2

WILBURY THEM PT.2

As I move on with the Traveling Wilburys, you are forewarned to get pen and paper ready, as I will be running down the “brothers” roster later in this episode.
Gonna start off with one that has Roy Orbison doing the lead vocal, and stacks right up there with all the great music he has done before.
Roy hadn’t had a real hit in decades, and joining the Wilburys helped him launch a career revival.
Unfortunately for him, he died only mere months after the recording of the Wilburys album, and his own solo one containing his last legitimate hit!
If you have seen the video for End Of The Line, you know the elegantly understated tribute to Orbison in it.
Outtakes have popped up over the years, so I will play a couple of his classic hits re-recorded with the Traveling guys.
Although the band was known for trading vocals, we’ll hear a song with clear spiritual overtones from the very spiritual George Harrison.
And a feisty Bob Dylan, taking on Bruce Springsteen with Tweeter & The Monkey Man.
Mansion On The Hill, anyone? Or Jersey Girl? Maybe Thunder Road?
And don’t forget, I’ll have the actual breakdown of comical names these Rock & Roll giants chose for that debut album.
We’ll end this one with my, and I am sure many other people’s, favorite Traveling Wilburys song.
To be continued…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE RONETTES PT.2 FINAL

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE RONETTES PT.2 FINAL

Well, in this concluding chapter, I will give you that answer right away about who influenced Ronnie Spector the most as a singer.
That way you can apply your knowledge to the remaining songs and say “Ok yeah, I hear it…”
Ronnie married Phil Spector in 1968, and a strange marriage to say the least.
The Ronettes sued him for non-payment of royalties.
It was always suspected that as a big honcho at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, he had kept them out of it because of those legal wrangles, and also his divorce from Ronnie.
While he was out on bail for his murder charges, they got in, inducted by big fan Keith Richards.
Now I recently found out, and was very surprised, that the Ronettes had done the original version of a song that was a hit for the Beach Boys.
I’ll play both of them- and you may be as surprised as I was.
Ronnie Spector had a hit with Eddie Money, singing Take Me Home Tonight.
Well, I am going to take you about 10 years before that, for a song she did that appeared on Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes debut album, demonstrating she still had the voice!
And was written by his Jersey buddy, Bruce Springsteen- a delightful bit of vinyl.
To go out, this show was broadcast April 15, Tax Day. And I have played the Beatles Taxman for it before.
But this time, I ask you to listen closely to the instrumentation, particularly the guitar work, and about two-thirds into it, you will hear lyrics you have probably never heard before.
Told you this would be fun!
