RockRoll360 #102 - Last Train Home ( Part 1 )

TRAINS
Trains take you to the empty spaces
Where orange fires raged the other day
And you could then collect the fire- dust
In the enclosed cup of your joined palms
And pour it in oblation into holy rivers
Which will take them to the green sea.
Trains bring people to river canals
Where death is a mere after-fact
Submerged in flowing green waters.
It is like what your life’s beginning was
When you were sleeping in your mother
Submerged in a sea of emerald aqua
With your eyes closed in green oblivion.
Trains take you through the sea of darkness
Holding you safely in their green wombs.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING GEORGE HARRISON PT.1
It is time for our annual tributes to George Harrison and John Lennon.
Last year I did a split show.
But there is so much music out there by both of them, much of it unheard, I decided each would get their own hour.
George died on November 29, 2001, with many of us here in New York City still reeling from the Sept. 11th attacks.
Looking over his songs, I wondered if they had taken on any greater meaning for him as he grew aware that he was terminally ill.
So, I thought I would open up with a few songs to show you what I mean.
But not wanting to play the same old same old, I will be playing different versions, or takes (sometimes demos), throughout these shows and John’s.
Take for instance, Give Me Love, Give Me Peace On Earth, where he sings almost pleadingly “give me life, give me hope”. If he even heard it during his illness, how would that make him feel?
Or the Art Of Dying, would that give him some strength and solace?
George had an ongoing battle with cancer, and that moron who stabbed him and punctured his lung didn’t help.
Isn’t It A Pity he had to leave us.
I have some live things too- one from a concert in 1974 and another from 1991.
Engineer Ken saw him in ‘74 but doesn’t remember hearing the track I will play- a bluesy version of a lesser-known Beatles song, complete with vibes!
It is a different George than the serious one, joking around with the band members and making up new words.
Plus I have George doing an acoustic version of a previously unreleased Bob Dylan song that ultimately ended as electric on the Porky’s Revenge soundtrack (HUH?)
I promise you will hear things you have never heard before.
And all guitar players should particularly enjoy this episode and the next with George Harrison!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: BOATS PT.3

These next 2 chapters can be listened to either BEFORE or AFTER Thanksgiving.
So no need to take time away from your turkey preparation, just listen at your leisure.
I open this one in a similar fashion to Part One, but from across the Atlantic.
Did you know George Washington declared a Day Of Thanksgiving in 1789, but my man Thomas Jefferson dismissed it?
What the hell was he thinking, lol?
A women’s magazine editor named Sarah Hale felt we should have one though, and wrote editorials and letters to presidents, governors and other influential people for FORTY YEARS, until President Lincoln proclaimed a National Day Of Thanksgiving in 1863.
In 1941, Congress made it a Holiday- the 4th Thursday in November.
In this episode, songs about Ships- including one co-written by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Paul Kantner (Kantner for years couldn’t collect on it because of contractual obligations- don’t you love those?).
Then I will begin a collection of songs for people heading for the dock, port or harbor, and those who are there waiting for them.
Starting with another contrast- this time between some old, poetic Dylan and the Hollies.
I will continue with that sub-topic in our final, concluding entry with a varied selection of songs you should enjoy.
Getting closer and closer to Turkey Time!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A ROCKOLLECTIONS LOOK AT WOODSTOCK PT.2

I came back in this half kidding about the name Wavy Gravy.
Engineer Ken told me what his real name was- you will not believe it, lol!
As I mentioned before, the premise of my doing Woodstock was to bring a different look at it.
So the first priority was to NOT play any of the songs that were on the original Woodstock album from 1970.
Remember, that 3-disc LP that was so amazing back then?
I mean, nobody put out 3 vinyl records in one album!
But by now, most people have heard those songs over and over, and I wanted to avoid making you do so again.
However there were necessary exceptions- and you will hear 2 of them in this episode.
To open, I have Richie Havens in his own words, talking about how they wouldn’t let him off the stage.
No one else was prepared to play, and they kept sending him back out there over and over.
And I have a confession to make- I have always done my show as a local one, a show from New York that does not try to be more than it is.
Nowadays there are so many sterile, syndicated shows that go nationwide.
As a result, they aim at such a broad audience that they lose all local color.
I want to be an exception and a throwback to when radio was your friend, and when I say it is a beautiful day I am talking about a beautiful day in New York City.
Even though terrestrially I am on over 70 affiliated stations across North America, never mind the internet where the reach is around the world.
Hell if I thought about that, I might get stagefright, lol!
All of this is leading me back to what was our local FM Rock station WNEW-FM again, and a reporter from there that would only be recalled by us New Yorkers.
His name was Mike Eisgrau, I don’t know if he is still around- but I will play the first of one of his reports filed live from the Woodstock Festival.
Also in this chapter a Bob Dylan song that I have never heard sung by Dylan, not even on bootleg.
Do enjoy our trip, definitely not on LSD, as we get ourselves Back To The Garden!
There are two more of these to come!
Mike
The audio clips used in this series were obtained from the archives of Dennis Elsas of WFUV, and they can be heard there along with much more, at Dennis’ website www.denniselsas.com.
I personally thank him for the memories.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THIS IS A MANN’S WORLD PT.2 END

Coming back with Manfred Mann, we’ve got Pretty Flamingo by them.
Then another of their many interpretations of Bob Dylan songs- this time his Just Like A Woman.
Manfred Mann was on of the few groups to successfully replace their lead singer and still remain at the top of their game.
The not so well known You Gave Me Somebody To Love is next, and the opening piano riff reminds me off the Vince Guaraldi Trio, the jazz group known for Cast Your Fate To The Wind and the Charlie Brown soundtracks.
Seemingly, ALL the British bands of that period HAD to do a cover of Muddy Water’s Got My Mojo Workin’- here is Manfred Mann’s contribution. And it rocks!
Gets MY mojo workin’- but that ain’t hard!
With their new lead singer, Mike D’Abo replacing Paul Jones, the group had their biggest hit in two years with yet another Dylan song.
Handbags & Gladrags I knew by Rod Stewart, but give a listen to their version of this excellent song.
Finally, a tune that bounced around in my head for over 20 years, and I never knew who did it- never knew any more than the part I would sing to myself!
Well, it was Manfred Mann.
See if you remember it.
Like I say on the show, old songs are like old friends- sometimes you haven’t run into them for years, and it feels so good when you do!
This whole Manfred Mann thing was fun.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THIS IS A MANN’S WORLD PT.1
I think I can guarantee you a fun time with this one,
it was a treat for me to do!
The music of that 60’s British Invasion group, Manfred Mann.
Just wait till you hear these songs- the memory section of your brain will be in overdrive.
We will start off with a countdown, 5-4-3-2-1.
The band was asked to provide a new theme for the famous British TV music show, Ready, Steady, Go.
That was what they came up with, and it was their first hit.
Then it is on to two nonsense titled songs, including their biggest ever hit, Do Wa Diddy Diddy- and listen closely, I have a rare TRUE stereo version that you don’t usually hear.
As usual, I will be telling you a bit about the band throughout.
Next up, the recipe that made ME- Hubble Bubble, Toil & Trouble.
Followed by a racy song for its time, written by Bob Dylan, though not released by him.
A song I first heard in FRENCH- by the old Fairport Convention, called by them, Si Tu Doir Partir.
Well, here is the first English version I heard. If You Gotta Go, Go Now (Or Else You’ll Have To Stay All Night). My sentiments exactly!
If I didn’t outright say it, I suggested as much many times in my lifelong bachelor life, lol!
The tune reached # 2 on the British charts despite being banned or edited by many stations.
Then one of the most autobiographical songs I have ever heard, The One In The Middle.
Listen closely to those lyrics- they name NAMES! Of course they are their OWN names, but still…
Got their version of the old Coasters song after that, Poison Ivy- and a damn good version it is.
We will close this episode out with one I’ll bet you haven’t heard in years, Ha Ha Said The Clown- and a song that always make me really laugh out loud, thinking of those folks who are afraid of clowns.
That calls for another Mike Pell Moment Of Clarity.
People, now hear this. There are many things in the world to fear. Clowns are NOT one of them, LOL!!!
By the way, Engineer Ken said he was dedicating that clown song to me.
Wonder why?
There will be more Manfred forthcoming in Part Two.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: PLANES PT.2

We continue now with our journey home for Thanksgiving, this year by Plane.
So, all songs will be about Planes or Flying- and for some strange reason I used a LOT of vinyl records for these shows, as all audiophiles will undoubtedly pick up on.
I owed you some ID’s from the previous chapter, and that will be taken care of.
The first song played is an amazing one. It was written on a dare in 15 minutes by someone you will be familiar with, before a trip to the airport.
I will have a bit more about the Wright Brothers, but not much this time.
Then it is time we get our own butts out to the airport, as we have flights waiting.
Two songs about that.
First, one I am sure you have not heard in a LONG time!
A one-hit wonder group from California that made it to #17 on the charts in the Flower Power period of 1967.
An unforgettable song, though I am sure it has been forgotten, about going from the U.S. to England in search of a hit single, and realizing that the trip and the effort is not worth breaking your loved one’s heart.
The next I HAD to play, and is maybe the FINEST song ever about leaving on a plane.
Some people may be surprised to learn it was written by John Denver!
Next, we will fly Trans Love Airways with Donovan- very 60’s sounding (and listen for his sly reference to flying Jefferson Airplane!).
Closing this episode out, I have a very funny set beginning with the brilliant Christine Lavin.
Then we will tackle the subject of Airport Security with a surprise guest, followed by Tom Paxton singing about the airlines’ uncanny ability to drive musicians crazy by breaking their guitars en route.
Closing this one out is a very short number, only seconds long, by Bob Dylan.
I don’t know what the hell he is singing about, but it is called Jet Pilot, lol!
All in all, this one is a fun time, as we reach the midpoint of our trek home for Thanksgiving.
Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE KINGSTON TRIO PT.2

Continuing with our exploration of the music by the Kingston Trio, I will open with a song that is still to this day their most requested- and yet it never cracked the Top 40 as a single.
Coupled with a story of my friend Dan’s visit to Scotland.
Oh yeah, you can tell he is a friend of mine, lol!
Then the saga of two songs, same music.
There was a Bob Dylan song I knew very well from before I was able to LEGALLY drink!
When I was legal and in an Irish bar, I heard someone singing an IRA song about what we called the “troubles”, that had the same tune as that Dylan one, and I was annoyed that it had been ripped off.
As I later found out, I had it backwards, and Dylan was the thief, or let’s say, borrower.
This is serious music, as both are powerful and thought-provoking, both have traitors in them.
No theologian me, I apologize if anyone is offended by my take on Judas in the Dylan song.
It was a purely personal thought that hit me in Catholic school, and I was amazed to hear that not only had someone else thought the same thing, but SANG about it!
Enough about that.
I’ll play a hit single by the Trio that has a lala title but is actually quite good.
Then a song they did, that I first heard in its Top 40 hit form by someone else- and by him a contender for Worst Song Ever Made, lol!
The Kingstons perform it in a much more palatable way.
To end this chapter, I wanted to go out with my very favorite Kingston Trio song.
Now I had told Engineer Ken what it was before the show, but by the end he had forgotten.
The ensuing confusion is kind of funny.
Actually, I had a LOT of fun with all these Kingston Trio shows- and it made me fun.
You’ll hear that, it shows!
To be continued…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.4 CONCLUSION

The final chapter of the Wilburys that Travel.
Heading right to the music, I’ll open open with Inside Out- the state of the world today, or maybe just the state of my life, lol!
Getting back to that question of why Vol.3 followed Vol.1, the official word was that Vol.3 was recorded by a different group of brothers.
All the remaining members, Dylan, Lynne, Harrison, Petty, took DIFFERENT Wilbury names.
In other words, a Vol.2 could NEVER be done, out of respect for the death of Roy Orbison.
Moving on with the music, got one for my inevitable trip to the Poor House.
The Traveling Wilbury’s CD’s were out of print for many years, mainly because George Harrison owned the rights, and died before he could renew them.
I have an outtake by George. A terrific song called Maxine.
I’ll be quoting from a very perceptive article by a guy named Phil Reed.
Then a song that may have slipped through the cracks, the Travelers contributed the title song on the children’s album, the Romanian Angel Appeal Benefit Album.
Engineer Ken accidentally played Roy Orbison’s last posthumous hit instead.
But we got it all straightened out.
I’ll take it all home with another outtake that is so good I can’t believe it wasn’t released- appropriately called I’m Gone (and I am in more ways than one, lol!)
Just a great rocker!
I owe a great debt of thanks to my pal Mike Hennessy for his contributions to this series.
So I do so publicly- Thanks Mickster!
This last episode is a good one. Hope you like it.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.3

Sorry for the delay, I had computer problems- this baby has been ready to go for days.
And it is a STRONG episode!
I’ll start with the Wilburys trading vocals on the opening track to their Vol.3.
What happened to Vol.2?
Well, there are 3 theories.
One, it is more of that quirky Wilbury humor.
Two, Vol.2 is now considered to be Tom Petty’s album Full Moon Fever- produced by Jeff Lynne and featuring Lynne, Harrison and Orbison (only one missing was Dylan).
Three, it had to do with the loss of Roy Orbison, and I will have more about that next chapter.
At any rate, I thought I’d play a cut from the Petty LP, dedicated to the approaching anniversary of 9/11.
When I was preparing these shows, I remember hearing a Wilbury song and thinking it could have been done by the Beatles, or Buddy Holly, or the Diamonds or a group like that from the 50’s.
I will play that one, and follow it with a doowop style song from Bob Dylan called 7 Deadly Sins- that’s right, count ‘em- 7.
Though it is a wonderful album, Orbison was sorely missed on Vol.3.
And during the period between the 2 albums, they could have called themselves the Traveling Circus.
They singly or in groups appeared on other people’s records.
I have a great example with George Harrison playing slide guitar on the album Duane Eddy, His Twangy Guitar & The Rebels.
It is an instrumental called The Trembler, and comes with a VERY interesting story about how George brought it to the session, having to do with Ravi Shankar.
After that, an outtake of a song you should know, by the boys and Del Shannon, rumored to take Roy Orbison’s place in the group.
Strangely, he instead took his own life.
We will go out on a happier note, with a great instrumental (?) version of New Blue Moon, that was a B-side to Wilbury singles TWICE!
As I said, a STRONG episode, and an equally good one coming next to close the series out.

As I move on with the Traveling Wilburys, you are forewarned to get pen and paper ready, as I will be running down the “brothers” roster later in this episode.
Gonna start off with one that has Roy Orbison doing the lead vocal, and stacks right up there with all the great music he has done before.
Roy hadn’t had a real hit in decades, and joining the Wilburys helped him launch a career revival.
Unfortunately for him, he died only mere months after the recording of the Wilburys album, and his own solo one containing his last legitimate hit!
If you have seen the video for End Of The Line, you know the elegantly understated tribute to Orbison in it.
Outtakes have popped up over the years, so I will play a couple of his classic hits re-recorded with the Traveling guys.
Although the band was known for trading vocals, we’ll hear a song with clear spiritual overtones from the very spiritual George Harrison.
And a feisty Bob Dylan, taking on Bruce Springsteen with Tweeter & The Monkey Man.
Mansion On The Hill, anyone? Or Jersey Girl? Maybe Thunder Road?
And don’t forget, I’ll have the actual breakdown of comical names these Rock & Roll giants chose for that debut album.
We’ll end this one with my, and I am sure many other people’s, favorite Traveling Wilburys song.
To be continued…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.1

I am going to start this whole thing out rockin’- and rightly so.
All things considered, the Traveling Wilburys were probably the greatest supergroup ever!
Certainly the greatest unoffical supergroup- they didn’t even use their real names.
But we know who they are.
The group came into existence because George Harrison needed a B-side for a single.
And what a freaky way it all fell into place, which I will most assuredly be talking about.
They did that B-side (ultimately replaced by another song), but the result was way too good to toss away as filler.
And they had so much fun recording that one song, they decided to record a full album together using pseudonyms as half-brothers, instead of their real names.
Those real names were, and get this, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne of ELO, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.
What a lineup- it’s Murderer’s Row!
As I said, I will open up rocking and go from there.
Included in this chapter, is a cutely sexy song by Dylan using car jargon- Bob has never been so lecherous and funny at the same time.
And if you listen closely near the end, he sings what was ALMOST the band’s name.
Of course, I will be telling you how they happened to pick their name, Traveling Wilburys.
And how it relates to what I have named this Series.
If you are a rocker, these Pods will be fun.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A FAT GUY PT.3

As we open Part 3, I will dip back into that solo Leslie West album from 1969, back when there was no group called Mountain.
His version of a Bob Dylan song made famous by the Band, and also by Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & Trinity as the theme to the British comedy Absolutely Fabulous.
In an attempt to avoid being compared to Cream, the group added a keyboardist.
So we will return to Mountain proper, for a series of songs I have always liked, including one that has always had a touch of melancholy for me.
In the 70’s there were some personnel changes.
Also in the 70’s, Leslie West kept busy by also playing with The Who on their Who’s Next sessions- and he was on the demo of Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Also on a Bo Diddley 20th Anniversary Tribute All Star Album.
And in the 2000’s, he has contributed to an Ozzie Osborne album, plus had solo and group LP’s.
I will close this chapter out with a song dedicated to our next power blackout!
In the next and final podcast, Leslie West joins a supergroup- but were they?
