ROCKOLLECTIONS: BACK TO BACK TO SCHOOL 2010 PT.2 END

I am going to open up this last half of Back To Back To School with a question.
A question regarding Teachers who use propaganda to brainwash kids, and although the song is from 1964, the situation has never been worse than it is today.
Then it is on to how maybe the reason I hated school was because when you think about it, the whole day for a kid revolves around it. and being told what to do.
So quickly the Rebel comes into our show, not unlike myself, making the Teachers mad.
Got a few tunes about the opposite sex attraction, and a terrific but obscure song by Chuck Berry that demonstrates the awful situation of how, if you go to school with your girlfriend, after you break up you still have to see her everyday,
I wanted to play another interpretation of that song written by Graham Parker, so I did.
But by a group this time, and live.
Finally, if you are anything like me, there was only one song to end with.
And that’s the one I chose!
The cartoon above is a hint, lol!
Thankfully, for many of us, all this School stuff is from a distance.
If you are living it, I am sorry for you, lol!
My computer needs a tuneup or more, so I will be back when I am able.
Until then, enjoy the music and keep on rockin’!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BACK TO BACK TO SCHOOL 2010 PT.1

This was the 3rd show I had planned before I was so rudely interrupted last September.
Well not exactly what I had planned, since I added songs in the course of the year, and a different time in free-form radio brings different results.
NO songs from last year will be repeated- all distinct selections for this 2010!
It is that most awful time of year again, resulting in going Back To Back To School, kicking and screaming!
I will open with a school that I might, just might, have had fun attending.
Continuing on with some good old Rock & Roll from the early days having to do with School.
Then another fond look back, this time at those wonderful School Days.
And I must emphasize that I mean the Time Period of our lives, NOT the actual tortuous hours physically spent IN School, lol!
Have fun if you can!
Another half coming.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: END OF SUMMER CRUISE PT.2 CONCLUSION

Alright- cruises, boats, etc.- you need Sailors.
That is where I am going in this one.
And when I say sailor, who is the first one you think of?
I have a real good set about Sailors, and since we had the wind, I lengthened it even more.
Then a change of pace to an entirely different kind of seagoing vessel, with a button-down mind, then the World’s Greatest Group!
This one has the usual surprises I hope you have come to expect. (Stick around for the ending!).
There was a time in the beginning of my 12 years when I had to fight to get things played- especially when I had a partner on the show (I could NEVER go back to that!).
And even more especially when I wandered far from Rock & Roll.
As I have mentioned before, this was a station that never played Rock & Roll, and I am still the only one who does!
There was this fear about what the higher-ups would think- even Engineer Ken many times wondered where I was going.
“You want to play WHAT?”
I would argue and tell them I will not embarrass you, this will work!
Most times they yielded and I got the recordings on the show.
But in the last 7 or 8 years, they have totally left me alone.
This show is now very much what I had always envisioned it to be.
And of course, there is that wonderful vindication of winning the Best Entertainment Show Of 2004 and again for 2007.
Enough of that, let’s enjoy the salty air against our faces and sail on.
One more thing…don’t awake with a tummy ache!
Mean anything to you?

ROCKOLLECTIONS: END OF SUMMER CRUISE PT.1

I thought I would try something different here, for this last official week of the season- an End Of Summer Cruise, using music as our proxy means of travel.
Whether the Cruise is on a lake, a river or the ocean- I got you covered.
Although if it is on an ocean, we might be lucky enough for some whale-watching!
Further, if you are tight for money and can’t afford a cruise, or if you don’t have a boat of your own, well, we can BUILD our own!
Which is just what we will do, again using songs as our tools.
Plus I will put a mythologically named group on the water, although their name is not my idea of a good time.
That river runs through hell!
This episode ends with a song that, if you listen to those illegal smile lyrics, I must remind you is ONLY a fantasy, lol!
There will be more to come, we will keep on cruisin’!
Oh yeah!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR 9/11- NEW YORK SONGS & MORE 2010 PT.2 END

![]()
Wow did it get cool here in New York City!
But there was an awful lot of heat coming from that picture.
My memory is that for months after, when I would pass the remains of the World Trade Center, it was still burning in certain areas.
Those rescue workers went through a lot- brave and uncomplaining.
This time out I will tell you how I feel about the proposed community center and mosque near Ground Zero.
Want to take a guess?
And there will be songs with that.
But first, another musical visit to another section of the city, heading way uptown this year- and taking a famous train on the subway to get us there.
We will conclude this year with a celebration of our Branches Of The Military from a Marine Corps base in Iraq by a legendary Hard Rock band, consistently voted among the Best Ever, that was ironically formed here in New York City.
Listen to their performance on a USO tour- and their rousing renditions of some very familiar songs that would hardly be called Rock & Roll, but in their hands…
That’s it- I did my best again this year to make sure you never forget what happened on Sept.11, 2001 with the music of my unconquerable city.
Terrorists take heed!
Mike
And again, for those curious or who want to hear what I played on the ONLY time my show has ever fallen on Sept.11th since it did in the fateful 2001, here are both halves of the Sept.11th 2007 broadcast.
By the way, that show back in 2001, the Beach Boys as I recall since Summer was ending, was never broadcast because the transmitter was atop one of the Twin Towers that came crashing down.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR 9/11- NEW YORK SONGS & MORE 2010 PT.1

Been a while since we did one of these traditional remembrances.
Not that I forgot- 2 years ago I was doing the Salute To Radio for my 10th Anniversary that ran into Sept.11th, and last year we were getting kicked out of our radio station.
No selfishness here, New York Songs because I am a New Yorker, do a show for that station that is back and running in New York, we took the biggest hit from those nitwit islamic terrorists, and there are simply more songs about New York than any place in the world.
If that weren’t enough, there are no songs to my knowledge about the attack on the Pentagon, and the one I know of about Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, Let’s Roll by Neil Young, I have played a number of times.
Although I live in Brooklyn, I grew up in Manhattan- those are my roots, and I worked many years in the Wall Street area where the World Trade Center was.
No matter what borough I live in though- and for those that don’t know we have 5, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island- I’ll always have a Heart In New York, loving That Beautiful Noise.
There will probably be songs in this first half you will not know.
But give them a chance and a close listen, for they contain lyrics meaningful to me, and maybe can give you a feel for this city, warts and all.
The upcoming Part Two will be VERY different!
For those interested, I did TWO WEEKS of shows in 2007, Sept.4 & Sept.11- the ONLY time my show has ever fallen on Sept.11th since 2001.
Here are both halves of the Sept 4th 2007 broadcast.

The Sept.11th one I will include with this 2010 Part Two coming soon.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE SOUNDS OF PETS PT.2 END

Did I mention Paul McCartney has said the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds was the driving force for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, lol?
He also has said God Only Knows is the best song ever written.
We continue with the other side of the album.
And in the interest of aural purity, I want you to know that I played the vinyl mono version of Pet Sounds for these two parts- the way Brian Wilson intended it to be heard.
Enjoy!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE SOUNDS OF PETS PT.1

Since I have been on vacation, a REAL traveling around vacation, not just one from radio like before, here’s an old show from 2006.
I did it for the 40th Anniversary of the Pet Sounds album, so add 4 years to everything I say, lol!
It was, and still is, a landmark album.
And it is commonly accepted as the challenge to the Beatles that resulted in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
That fact alone makes it worth a listen.
Plus, even before the Beatles, the Beach Boys (always underrated because of their Surf Music beginnings) had developed into a self-contained group- writing, producing, arranging, etc., their own music.
So, the first of two parts on a Classic Album.
An album you will hear me read about, comment on, and most importantly, play.
Frankly, I think I talked too much, lol!
