Longtown Sound 1015 The Sunday Edition

Matthew 5:14-18
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

I received an email from Doc Roberts as follows -
Unc! Here’s an idea: Encourage your listeners to create/post a Sunday Prayer using the titles of your playlist. Make it a weekly contest. The winner gets to “virtually” sit at the head of the “virtual” dinner table next Sunday.
Here’s my offering: (from a previous Sunday’s playlist)
“One Day Everything failed me. I had Just One Hope that, Lord, It Was You who would give me a Second Chance. Now, It Is Well With My Soul.”
Just a thought….

Thanks, Doc! Okay, friends. Create your prayer from the playlist above and post in the comments. I’ll judge ‘em fair and square and determine a winner, though you all are already!

RockRoll360 #108 Golden Age of Underground Radio Vol. 2 (Part 2)

above photo ::: B.Mitchell Reed
KMET was a Los Angeles radio station originally owned by Metromedia that first took to the air in June 1968 at 94.7 MHz. The station, nicknamed “The Mighty Met,” was the pioneering station of the “underground” progressive rock format.
KMET stood in direct contrast to other music stations of the era. Rather than the tight, high-energy Top 40 sound of popular AM stations such as KHJ, KMET and other progressive rock stations played more eclectic artists with much longer songs and more socially-conscious lyrics. The disc jockeys talked much less, and in a more personal, relaxed manner. They were also not afraid to voice their opinions on controversial topics, such as politics, the Vietnam War and civil rights, and most importantly, they chose the music that they played on the air. There was no playlist. Evident of this approach is longtime KMET late night host Jim Ladd (currently at onetime rival KLOS-FM), whose laid-back philosophical ruminations usually led into a song, from artists such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, The Doors or Led Zeppelin - that underscored his point.KMET often mixed counterculture comedy skits by Firesign Theatre and The Credibility Gap with the music. The Credibility Gap broadcast satirical skits during the Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade in the 1970s.[1] Another KMET staple at the time was Dr. Demento, whose show began on KPPC-FM. The “Dr. Demento Show” moved to KMET-FM in 1972 and soon became the most listened-to Sunday evening radio program in Los Angeles. Following Dr. Demento on Sunday nights, Mike Harrison hosted a phone-in talk show called Harrison’s Mike. The adventurous KMET was a member of a fraternity of widely respected progressive rock stations that emerged across the country in the late 1960s and early 1970s, along with KSAN, WNEW in New York, WBCN in Boston, WMMS in Cleveland, KQRS-FM in Minneapolis, and others. The 1978 movie FM was reportedly loosely based on KMET. Much of the history of the salad days of KMET is documented in Jim Ladd’s book Radio Waves, where the station is referred to as Radio KAOS and many of the DJs are given pseudonyms [2]. ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR THE 4TH OF JULY- JAY & THE AMERICANS PT.2 END

I will open this chapter with Only In America, having already told you the story behind it.
Last year, I did a 4-part Podcast theme series called A Celebration Of America- and it is here at WLSO.FM.
At the end of Part 4, I played that same song but by the Drifters, only because I wanted to play a different interpretation. Not knowing at the time that THEY had done the first and original version!
So if you want to hear that piece of history, as I say, it is here. You just have to go back and look for it.
After that great song for this holiday, Jay Black at his operatic best with a song by Rodgers & Hammerstein from South Pacific that was a hit too.
Did you know that Jay & The Americans were responsible for Neil Diamond’s first success as a songwriter?
They did a song he wrote called Sunday And Me, and I’ve got and will play it, you get to hear it.
The band’s last Hit reached # 19 in 1970, and was an old Ronettes tune.
After that, I have a strange one, a curiosity they released in late 1966- an odd, very 60’s sound not at all like what we were used to hearing from them.
Even the title is kinda weird, He’s Raining In My Sunshine. Far out, man!
Turns out Jay Black had a big gambling problem with some big debts, and he sold the group name to pay them off.
Of note is that over the years the group included Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who left to form Steely Dan.
Then, I have a couple of treats.
One member of the Americans, Kenny Vance, started a group with the Planetones that in 1975 came out of nowhere with their doowop retro style, for an unlikely hit in the midst of what was by then a no longer experimental but a formulaic music scene.
Their throwback sound broke the formula, and I just remember it seeming so out of place. But I liked it then and I like it now.
As a born and bred New Yorker, I knew about singing in the subways and the bathrooms and Looking For That Echo!
I will end this Independence Day show with a song I have played quite a few times before on the radio.
I will never understand why this beautiful, wonderful song, done years ago by Eric Andersen, never became a perennial hit.
And in addition I have newly tacked on an inspiring John Phillip Sousa March to take us out at the end- perfect to listen to while watching the Fireworks!
Happy 4th Of July everyone, everywhere!
And Happy Birthday America!
Mike
