ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR THE 4TH OF JULY- JAY AND THE AMERICANS PT.1

For the 4th Of July, I wanted something American.
Then it occurred to me- Jay & The Americans!
I had some fun with the beginning of this one.
Oh, and that famous Denise likes them too- I don’t know whether more than Herman’s Hermits or not.
After this, she will never have a reason to listen again- certainly not for ME, lol!
At the start there was Jay Traynor, and he was replaced by Jay Black.
Black had that at times operatic voice, as did Roy Orbison.
I’ll have the very interesting story of Only In America, ORIGINALLY recorded by the Drifters but given to Jay & The Americans with the same music track behind them, it was unchanged.
The song was considered unrealistic being sung by The Drifters!
As usual, I will be playing songs that are forgotten by the tight playlists of today’s radio.
Including one in particular, called Think Of The Good Times that had Engineer Ken and I look at each other and smile in recognition, an excellent old forgotten song that revealed nothing by its title, but when it started to play it was instantly recognizable.
There are extra studio bits of intro on some of the songs, that being a trend today.
Oh, and listen closely for that squeaking door at the beginning of one of the songs!
I was feeling very goofy during this show, and that will continue in Part Two- as well as some surprises.
Mike

RockRoll360 #107 Golden Age of Underground Radio Vol. 2 (Part 1)

Front yard of Estrellas house above, MJL plays guitar. Around this time, early 70s, she and her friends recently made a jingle for KMET radio station. “A little bit of heaven, ninety-four point seven, KMET twiddle-dee”
RockRoll360 #107 Golden Age of Underground Radio Vol. 2 (Part 1 )
Various Artists - Golden Age of Underground Radio
(1989 Dcc Compact Classics ) (CD) (Part 2)
A logical and proper extension of the first volume of the series (which spotlighted FM underground pioneer Tom Donahue), Golden Age of Underground Radio, Vol. 2 features recordings of the legendary Los Angeles disc jockey B. Mitchell Reed, who was one of the mainstays on KMET FM, as well as an extremely important mover and shaker in the city in its prime. Taken from shows of the 1968-1971 period, this show showcases what FM radio was, as well as its necessity and artful production. Around fabulous (full-length) versions of FM staples by Love (”Alone Again Or”), Donovan Featuring the Jeff Beck Group (”Barabajagal”), and about a dozen other turntable hits, Reed keeps the flow going with smooth, hip, and very honest raps that capture the moment in tact and in real time. Commercials of the era (such as “The Hip Bagel”) and news reports only add to the period charm and transport the listener to a very real evening of music and intelligent thought. Like Donahue, Reed started in AM radio, during its loud, fast, mile-a-minute Top 40 heyday. The metamorphosis that he and the audience were going through at the dawn of the 1970s is captured here in all of its glory, making this an exquisite social, spiritual, and political document, not to mention an artistic one as well.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUNE IS NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.4 END

We will start off this final episode with a few more real River songs- for Rivers that geographically and specifically do exist.
And leaving the country once more for the Amazon River, with a wonderfully twisted use of words by an unlikely source- sweet, cuddly Don McLean.
Then a couple about one of America’s most famous Rivers, at least in song, that we have been misspelling for well over a century!
I have a behind-the-scenes story about doing a show one time, and Engineer Ken refusing to play a song that I wanted to come on next.
So while one song was playing, and running down with each second, I was out of the studio insisting the next tune was the way to go, all the while listening to that playing song tick away, knowing I had only seconds to literally run to be back on the microphone.
Ken and I have laughed about that incident for years now.
Particularly in light of what he did next, lol!
I will play that problematic (for him more than me!) song, and also my vindication for insisting that it was a damn good one.
In between…the most aptly named artist of the entire series.
Then I will begin to wind down our 2 week celebration of National Rivers Month in a Peaceful way.
Ending this Theme in an almost full circle way, I have a song that refers back to the very first song I played to open it!
Hope you enjoyed the trip.
I see Part 3 has gotten a lot of play, but where were you for Parts 1 & 2?
And finally, be kind to your Rivers- look at how the incompetents are ruining the Ocean!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUNE IS NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.3

Continuing on…
National Rivers Month is a time to enjoy all of the things that rivers bring to our communities. Rivers provide drinking water, recreational opportunities, environmental ecosystems and wildlife habitats. Rivers have also been used as a source of food, for transport, as a defensive barrier, as a source of hydropower to drive machinery, and as a means of disposing of waste.
But don’t pee in the River, lol!
After our opening song, a bit of humor from Jackie Vernon.
There’s a name…he was a standup comic known for his deadpan delivery.
He is also known for being the voice of Frosty the Snowman in the special that is run on TV every year at Christmas.
Following that, the most perfect song imaginable to follow Vernon’s story!
Then I thought I would play some songs about real, actual, existing geographical Rivers.
And I will be choosing them from Rock, Folk, Soul and anywhere else the current carries me.

Paul and Barnabas sang when they were jailed in prison in the book of Acts. Sometimes to hear the words of God sung are the healing balm that diverts you away from deep seated sadness to that of a communal spiritual holy God sanctioned power that almost can not be defined in words. This is done for the comfort factor so that we may be patient in this present evil that is growing daily, and yet the Victor is scheduled to come despite it all.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUNE IS NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.2

Opening up this chapter on Rivers, I have a test for you.
Sometimes I like to see just how smart the listeners are, lol!
So you have the length of three songs to figure out the answer, although with my high regard for you, I doubt it will take that long.
And please stick with the first song, don’t bail on me- it is a beauty by Eric Andersen, but you may not be familiar with it.
The next two you should DEFINITELY know…and will answer my pop quiz, lol!
After that slight puzzle, I’ve got a River song in here that for some reason was indelibly stamped into my memory back in the 60’s.
It’s by David Ackles, and it’s the only song I can remember by him. called Down River.
It’s about a guy who is released from prison, so is it the opposite of being sent Up The River?
Everything is changed for him, and he tries so desperately to hide his crushing disappointment to the now married to someone else woman he loves- it is truly heartbreaking.
Following that, a long song that has some not-recommended lyrics- if you ever do them, they will absolutely get you put in prison.
I will close this episode out with a million-selling instrumental River song from the 50’s- a real Rocker!
Guess what it is?
Coming up, I have an idea for our Rivers presentation next week that I think you might enjoy.
So I hope you will return for a listen, as we musically celebrate June being National Rivers Month.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUNE IS NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.1

I think you can easily see where I am going with this Theme series for the next two weeks.
National Rivers Month is celebrated annually during the month of June to promote awareness and preservation of the country’s Rivers.
A river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing toward an ocean, a lake, a sea or another river.
In a few cases, a river simply flows into the ground or dries up completely.
Small rivers may also be called streams, creeks or brooks.
For this event, I have gathered a bunch of my favorite River songs.
And as usual, there are far too many for me to have time enough to play.
So I just let the tide take me in that free-form and free-association way of choosing the songs, flowing along like a River.
I haven’t done the Parts 3 & 4 yet, but I can already see that some truly wonderful River songs will necessarily be left out.
In this opening chapter, I will take you down to the River and watch it flow, roll on it, realize how wide it can be, and play a River song that some people (including members of the Beatles) consider the Greatest Rock & Roll song ever made.
We will also hear a River song that would be a drunkard’s dream, one that speaks of how shallow they can be (although not as shallow as me, lol), a classic one from the Man In Black, and ending this episode, a warning about trying to cross a River.
Hopefully, you will enjoy this opening salvo for one of our most beautiful natural resources- it contains some very enjoyable music you will both remember and be introduced to.
Give me a Theme about something, and I will give you several shows, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MUSIC FOR MONEY & THE FINANCIAL CRISIS PT.8 CONCLUSION

Here is the finale of our look at Money and the Financial Crisis.
So I thought we would take a musical look at some of those who TAKE our money, and give little, if anything, in return.
That includes Unions, Gold diggers (not being sexist, they can be of either gender), and the biggest offender of all…the Government.
What do they care? It’s Only Money. And it is not THEIRS!
In between, it is ironic as we have been playing music, that the music industry itself has one of the most shameful histories for cheating artists out of their money.
To close, I have two separate and completely different endings.
One a bad one, and since I couldn’t leave you like that, another a good one.
I also leave with these thoughts.
We currently owe 13 TRILLION dollars, and according to a Treasury Department report to Congress that will be 19 TRILLION in less than 5 short years, 2015.
Can that amount ever really be paid?
Things don’t look too good for the world either, according to a report today by the IMF below.
IMF: Risks to Global Economy Have ‘Risen Significantly’
Thursday, June 10, 2010
By: Frank McGuire
The RISKS to a robust global recovery have “risen significantly” as many governments struggle with debt, a top International Monetary Fund official has warned.
“After nearly two years of global economic and financial upheaval, shock waves are still being felt, as we have seen with recent developments in Europe and the resulting financial market volatility,” Naoyuki Shinohara, the IMF’s deputy managing director, said in Singapore on Wednesday.
“The global outlook remains unusually uncertain and downside risks have risen significantly,” Shinohara said, according to Britain’s Daily Telegraph.
Countries across Europe are being pressured to slash their deficits, which were deepened by the financial crisis and the governments’ response to it.
Some economists fear that moves by countries ranging from Britain to Spain to rein in public spending at the same time will set back a global recovery, the Telegraph reported.
Europe’s debt crisis could disrupt global trade, hurting demand for Asian exports and sending “hot money” into the region if policymakers fail to act swiftly and appropriately, Shinohara said, according to Reuters.
I have only tried to warn you, so don’t kill the messenger.
There are good people out there working to fix things using the free market system- leave them alone, keep the Goddard government out of it, and they will surely succeed.
Good luck to us all!
Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MUSIC FOR MONEY & THE FINANCIAL CRISIS PT.7

This is the next-to-last chapter, and opens with a song I am sure at least a few people have been wondering when I was going to play!
After that, one of the numbers I thought of during the layoff- another variation on that old Barrett Strong tune.
I won’t say who does it, but I will tell you that the group’s name sounds like something I would see during my worst hangovers, lol!
This is followed by one from the most influential group of the early days of Rock & Roll in my opinion, in fact it is R & B, and BEFORE Rock & Roll.
Then I attempted to go back in time even farther, but fortunately for you, that one CD was missing in a Bing Crosby Box Set I have.
But I found an alternative for this song that is historic, and actually dates back to the Great Depression- it came out in 1931 or 1932.
Turns out I had a vague memory of it being on Spanky & Our Gang’s 1967 debut album, and I was right.
So we’ll hear that version…maybe a better choice than Bing Crosby…maybe not.
This song has some very serious lyrics, and I ask you to listen to them- they were of their time, and may well become of our time if things do not improve.
After that, a song from a guy who was called the World’s Oldest Teenager before Dick Clark, and would have been old enough to remember the Depression firsthand.
Incidentally, this song was recorded at the legendary Sun Studios, before Elvis and the other white Rockabilly artists got there.
And after that, some much needed humor to close out this episode.
One contemporary and one that goes back to 1961 and contains some brilliant satire.
And they both have to do with Money!
One last chapter forthcoming, and then I go back to being sweet, innocuous me, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MUSIC FOR MONEY & THE FINANCIAL CRISIS PT.6

I am dedicating almost this entire episode to Gold.
It seems that when people lose confidence in their paper currency they turn to it.
While I can understand that, the problem with buying Gold is that it does nothing to help the economy, except for the seller.
People hoard it, an unproductive asset- while even leaving your cash in the bank spurs economic activity, as banks lend against your deposit.
But it is an ancient store of value, and at over $1200 an ounce a tempting one.
There are quite a few songs about Gold, and I just touched the surface here.
In fact, I wanted to play Midas Man by Renaissance, but time constraints worked against it.
Presumably you know that story- everything King Midas touched turned to Gold.
But as a morality tale, that seeming blessing turned into a curse.
So if you know the song, play it in your head, lol!
However I was able to play a related song by the Hollies that should have your memory in overdrive upon hearing it.
One of those forgotten gems from the FM 60’s!
And here’s something you may not have known. I didn’t.
In 1933, during the Depression and soon after Franklin Roosevelt became President, he confiscated almost all privately owned gold, including gold coins.
If you did not turn in your gold, you were subject to jail time- up to 10 years!
Roosevelt did this without Congressional approval, simply issuing an Executive Order.
Without question his actions were unconstitutional, and hey, those Executive Orders…sound familiar?
The next-to-last song in this chapter makes me laugh, and I chose it deliberately as it pertains to my own lack of Money OR Gold.
And here I am trying to warn you as if I were some financial genius, lol!
But I am attempting to do just that, as I believe some real hard times are coming.
Ending the show with a Beatle song…but not by the Beatles.
We’ll wrap things up next week, and I have two separate endings planned.
I hope you join me for the final two parts.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MUSIC FOR MONEY & THE FINANCIAL CRISIS PT.5

After some time away from it I am back on the Money & Financial Crisis case.
Since I last put out an episode, the Dow Jones dipped 1,000 points in about 20 minutes one day, Greece had to be bailed out (a freakin’ COUNTRY!), Spain’s rating has been downgraded, Ireland is in serious trouble, oil keeps spilling into the Gulf while BP & the Government, aka Dumb & Dumber, stand around with their thumbs up…well maybe their thumbs would be of better use plugging that pipe.
And we keep spending although we don’t have the money!
Things seem better to you?
Plus through all this there are still those entitled-mad people out there who can’t get enough for nothing.
We’ll take a musical look at Easy Money.
People have always attempted to acquire Easy Money- it is almost a time-honored tradition.
And at least it requires some thought, for chrissakes, lol!
During my time away from this series, I naturally thought of more songs, so the series will go a little longer.
I have a song in here by David Bromberg that he co-wrote with George Harrison- and I have always felt that is George at the end screaming in a high-pitched female-like voice.
Almost certainly, his recognizable guitar playing is on the record- although no credit is given on the jacket.
And that’s what I wanted to tell you.
I originally played the CD version of the song and something wasn’t right…it was different, not the way I remembered it.
So I dug out the old vinyl LP and went with the one that was comfortable to me.
Actually, I use my decades-old turntable frequently on this Rockollections thing, I just don’t bother to tell you, lol!
