ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE CYCLE OF LIFE PT.7

mp_cycle7.jpg

Getting near the end of The Cycle Of Life, as we reach and take a musical look at Old Age.
That pretty much is how it works in real life, right?
One song about growing old I was not familiar with was suggested by a listener named Eve.
And it does fit in here nicely, done by quite the collection of ladies- Janis Ian, Phoebe Snow and Odetta.
So thank you Eve, for thinking like I do.
Also included is a song I always play for my birthday, been doing it for decades now.
And I will close this next-to-last-episode out with 3 of the finest songs I know about Old Age.
All brilliant, all gems!
Two of them done by guys who were close friends in Chicago, John Prine and Steve Goodman.
Prine’s masterpiece about that bane of Old Age, loneliness.
And Goodman doing Michael Smith’s classic about senility and love.
Leading into maybe the most poignant of all, with that fear we all share.
After all, you should be able to guess what’s coming next.
But first let’s have some fun and Grow Old Together!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE CYCLE OF LIFE PT.6

mp_cycle6.jpg

One last song about children leaving home to open this chapter.
Saving the best for last, it is my favorite- and a return to old friend Tom Rush.
There should be a prequel to this one.
Something was said, something that will be regretted, forgiven but not forgotten.
Then a little detour.
Birthdays are certainly a part of The Cycle Of Life, and mine was last Sunday.
The only time it ever fell on the day of the show was in 2006- back with Engineer Ken, and we were doing the Tribute/Memorials.
I thought I’d do something cute for that birthday day and…well you decide.
So an excerpt from 4 years ago.
Then it is on to the next phase of The Cycle Of Life, the one it seems I am firmly entrenched in- at least I hope I am not in anything older, lol!
Welcome to Middle Age!
There is some real fine music picked out for this, what might seem like a ho-hum topic!
At my age, you can trust me on that, lol!
Next week, we go around the circle one last time.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE CYCLE OF LIFE PT.5

mp_cycle5.jpg

Resuming our series, last week we had the actual Wedding, this time a look back at that memorable day with a couple of songs that do so very nicely.
Starting with a gorgeous song that due to the horrible, sorry state of radio these days, received virtually no airplay.
I wish it weren’t so, but it is doubtful you have heard it- if you have please try to let me know.
It is by Martha Trachtenberg, whenever I have played it for friends it gets quite a reaction, and alone is worth the price of admission.
Wait, what price of admision, lol?
Then we will continue along the Cycle Of Life with Having Kids Of Your Own.
Maybe that was the reason for the Wedding…wink, wink!
The kids grow up quickly and sooner than expected are ready to move out on their own.
So, what we  have here are some musical reflections from that lifelong bachelor and noted authority, ME, on Child Rearing!
Damn, that strikes me as funny, lol!
Stick with me folks, we are working our way through the ups and downs of things past or things to come, in The Cycle Of Life.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE CYCLE OF LIFE PT.4

Funny Wedding Photo by weddingssc2.

Ending those Teenage years, we have a couple of rites of passage.
Unpleasant, but they have to be gotten through.
And some great songs dealing with that.
After that, we are now pretty much grown up.
In our 20’s or early 30’s, like our parents did, we will be getting married.
Well, not exactly we, I stood on the sidelines for that one,
And this lifelong bachelor hasn’t seen too many living commercials for marriage!
Almost all my friends got divorced- some more than once!
But you and I can still exchange vows- of a much lesser status, and no messy legalities, lol!
Join me at the head table, as Rockollections Takes A Trip Down The Aisle!
And the Wedding continues next week.
Plus the next phase in The Cycle Of Life.

mp_cycle3.jpg

Continuing on with The Cycle Of Life.
Last week we were born.
Now we are no longer babies, just laying there making cute facial expressions.
We can do other cute things, plus get into mischief.
Our parents have dreams for us, and we might have some of our own.
These are the BEST memories, both for you and your parents- so enjoy them while you can.
We will spend some quality time with the Kids!
After that, those innocent days before and then the beginning, of the tough Teenage years.
Here comes trouble!
Let’s musically enjoy them all over again.
And get into some trouble…but nothing too bad…no deliquents here.
Hey, most of us were good kids.
Those who weren’t, well you know who you are.
Here’s a chance to redeem yourself, lol!
Opening with an Irish guy, with an Irish sound, and wishing you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE CYCLE OF LIFE PT.2

 mp_cycle2.jpg

This is the episode where the Cycle Of Life actually begins,
After identifying some songs I owe you, I was thinking that one good reason for finally doing this series is because We May Never Pass This Way Again, and I should do it while I can.
In order to have Life you have to be born.
As promised, Rockollections Will Give Birth.
Even beginning with some pre-natal songs.
Then, like everyone who reads this or listens to the show, we will come into the world.
Included in this chapter is one of my favorite old Buffalo Springfield songs, written by then member Neil Young.
It’s about a newborn child, but uniquely sung from the standpoint of the child.
Just wonderful!
As always, I hope you enjoy this attempt at bringing you our music in a different way.
And when we resume next week, we will take our first baby steps and continue to grow and travel forward along that Cycle Of Life.
A Toast To Life…well, consider the alternative!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE CYCLE OF LIFE PT.1

mp_cycle1.jpg

Here’s another idea for a Theme Series that I have had for a long time that would bump into the annual Tribute/Memorials.
The Cycle Of Life!
And I would always be reminded by those people passing away, thereby completing the Cycle.
Well, no more excuses.
It’s a new decade, and after about 10 years of doing them, I am putting those Tributes to rest, at least for a while.
As you will hear me say, it is coincidental that this comes during my birth month, March. Thinking more about it, maybe…maybe not.
At any rate, in this first chapter I will be taking a musical look at just some of what the singers and the songwriters think Life is- including our major opening question.
But to give you a better understanding of our real beginning and how this journey is going to go, in the next chapter Rockollections Will Give Birth!
Yes, Life will begin and I will take it from there.
At this point I have no idea how long this Theme Series will take.
It’s free-form radio, and I’ll know when I get to the end.
But this is how it begins…

RockRoll360 #089 - Golden Age of Underground Radio (Part 1)

Golden Aga oF Rock & Roll ( Pt. 1 )

Various Artists - Golden Age of Underground Radio (1989 Dcc Compact Classics ) (CD)   (Part 1 )

“This is Tom Donahue and I’m here to play phonograph records.”
With that sign-on, Tom Donahue defined “underground” FM radio in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This disc takes the listener back to that time period, with samples of Donahue’s news spots, commercials, and between-song chat taken from airchecks while he worked as the “Big Daddy” of Bay Area broadcasting at KSAN-FM in San Francisco. The music here is a compendium of popular album cuts from that 1968-1972 era. Listening to this album is like spending 70 minutes in a time warp, when flowers, beads and long hair were de rigueur, head shops and independent record shops flourished, musicians were free to take risks with their recordings, and FM radio still allowed its announcers to choose their own music. Peace, love and hope are once again in the air and on the airwaves. It’s a trip worth taking.

Close your eyes and picture yourself with your Grateful Dead tee shirt on along
with your sandals. Your long hair brushes against your shoulders and your
driving down Ashbury in “The Haight”
in San Francisco in your VW bus with your friends. The sweet aroma of God’s gift to you fills the bus.  Then you turn on your FM / 8-Track car stereo and tune into 94.9.  You see that bright red stereo light letting you know you are receiving the signal loud and clear. Now you are there, in the years of 1968 through 1972 - Have a nice trip won’t you with the Legendary Tom Donohue KSAN Radio Stereo 94.9 in San Fran.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A CELEBRATION OF WINTER PT.4 CONCLUSION

mp_winter4.jpg

My beloved Winter ain’t over yet.
I am going to open up this final chapter with a set of music about those freezing Cold Winds that are always able to slip in through the cracks, no matter what kind of house you live in.
We will hear from the Fairport Convention, the Doors and a great but grossly ignored group called Spirit.
I have some info on the famous 1816 Winter Without Summer- in which Connecticut had blizzards in JUNE & JULY!
Plus all the strange temps in other places that year.
We are all aware that it is always colder at night in the Winter, sometimes by as much as 15 to 20 degrees or more.
And never more so than when you are without your sweetheart, your main squeeze.
So some songs about that.
Including the beautiful “On A Winter’s Night” by Willie Nininger- with lyrics like these, “…just for now, we’ll stay by the radio, we’ll sing every song we know, turn off all the lights, wrap the blankets warmly, shut the windows tight, put your arms around me- for all we know, it may snow tonight”.
And an equally wonderful song from Gordon Lightfoot, one of the rare non-Christmas songs to have sleigh bells in it. Listen for them.
I have chosen an appropriate and meaningful to me song to end it all with.
This was great fun for me.
I hope I have made the case that Winter songs can be just as good as Summer ones.
And hey, remember it is STILL Winter- for all we know, it MAY snow tonight!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A CELEBRATION OF WINTER PT.3

mp_winter3.jpg

Well we may have some snow flurries in the next few days.
OK with me, lol!
I will open this episode up with the sounds of Winter, those cold winds blowing.
By the way, all of the unbelievable weather information I got and passed along is from the National Weather Service- so they ought to know a thing or two.
Wait till you hear about the Winter of 1779-80!
I played my favorite Winter song already, so I will share my 2nd favorite with you, plus two songs that have always seemed to me to go together perfectly.
Then the fascinating Winter of 1888!
We will close out with my sermonizing on the treatment of the Acadian people after the French & Indian War- a subject that is recorded so brilliantly in the Band’s Acadian Driftwood.
I can’t stop now.
And I will continue to shovel Winter songs at you, as this is beginning to snowball!
One more chapter to go.
