ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2008 PT.7

Here’s Part Seven of the Tribute/Memorial series interrupted by my stay at home for 4 months.
Those involved didn’t mind…they remained dead, lol!
I actually did this show this past July.
That won’t matter in this chapter, but will come into play in the next one.

This series is not morbid nor maudlin, it is rather a celebration of the lives of those we lost in the previous year- in this case 2008.
Sort of an Irish Wake!
At least SOME of these people should have touched you in some way, shape or form, and made your life a bit happier and more pleasant.
I will be dealing with the notable or should be noted.
For the musical folks who passed on, they are deserving of one more play, at the very least.
And we will deal with other cultural figures as well, with some hopefully appropriate music for them.
You are welcome, encouraged even, to anticipate or second-guess my own musical choices!

In this seventh episode, those selected are:
Jerry Reed
Richard Wright (Pink Floyd)
Lou Teicher (Ferrante & Teicher)
Norman Whitfield (Motown Legend)
George Wydell Jones (The Edsels)

They can’t give any more than they have already given us.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TEACHERS PT.2

Opening back up with one more GOOD Teacher song, this time a title song from a movie.
You are forewarned, both the movie and the song are so sweet, you may fall into a diabetic coma!
And notice, as I will comment upon in this episode, that none of these fictional teachers are from books- just movies & TV.
Maybe because kids can’t read.
Just a thought…cynical as it is, lol!
I have a list of some famous people who previously were Teachers, before reaching that fame for other things.
Then it is on to BAD Teachers- stifling creativity for one offense.
More famous folks who were Teachers.
And then we take a musical look at a recent phenomenon, something I couldn’t let pass.
I can understand being hot for your teacher, but when in heaven’s name did it become a two-way street?
When did actual hot, good-looking, sexy Teachers, and I am talking women here, decide it was alright to be hot for their young students?
And why in the hell did I have to miss out on that, lol?
Again I am a day late and a buck short!
The original idea was to continue this series with two more parts, Back To Back To School- and that probably will appear at a later date, and under different circumstances- I am never one to let a good idea go to waste.
But something of such dark consequences seems to be taking place at the station I operate out of, my plans have been quickly revised.
I will have more to say about that, and will be as honest with you as I always am.
Suffice it to say for now, that I and my colleagues are not happy campers.
And campers we seemingly are about to become!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TEACHERS PT.1

teacher

You know, Teachers have to go Back To School too.
I wonder how they feel about that?
Not as miserable as I was, I’ll bet, lol!
We will begin this musical look at Teachers with some words- funny words- from New York City’s own (the Bronx), and former NYC substitute teacher, Robert Klein.
Opening a very long set.
After that, well, there are Good Teachers and Bad Teachers- the ones we relate to are mostly fictional, we see them in movies or TV series.
The real GOOD ones toil anonymously, dedicated to their students, going well beyond the school day and their duties, and never getting much credit for it.
They should be celebrated.
As the true BAD teachers should be revealed.
How to do that, I leave to you.
I do music, and we begin our take on Good Teachers with a another comedian- whose standup routine was the idea for a television series.
To be continued…

Mike

Also first segment of this show is not from the original weekend show
which features Dwayne Glasscock & Tammi Heide ( # ) was added
by me from my old WBCN collection from the years 1977 -1988.

Next week I’ll starting from the beginning of the special weekend show.
This show has been edited down from original. One big change is no commercials
except on this one because it is the last spot BCN presented.
It will take quite a while here on WLSO before we land back to this last show.
So if you love rock oddities, rarities, great interviews with the rock greats,
radio stories with the retired & new personal of WBCN - You’ll love this !

There is a new documentary film about WBCN being produced, entitled “The American Revolution.” The film is being produced by the Peabody Award-winning Lichtenstein Creative Media. It chronicles WBCN during the years 1968 and 1975, and examines the station’s role in covering and promoting the profound social, political, and cultural changes of that era.

Producers are filming the station’s final days for use in the film, and there’s more about the documentary at www.WBCNthefilm.com

Longtown Sound 568 Weekend Power Hour Featuring- Tim Gleeson, James Intveld, Michelle Featherstone, Doc Roberts, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Chris Loid, Joe Colledge, Wiser Time, Assembly of Dust, Into The Presence, Brad Hammonds, Doug Folkins, Sean Faust, Jennings and Keller, Wes Tucker and the Skillets

Longtown Sound 568

When Your Hut’s on Fire:
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the worst had happened, and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger. He cried out, ‘God! How could you do this to me?’ Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! ‘How did you know I was here?’ asked the weary man of his rescuers. ‘We saw your smoke signal,’ they replied.

The Moral of This Story:

It’s easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn’t lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.

P. S. You may want to consider passing this on, because you never know who feels as if their hut is on fire today.

It’s Friday and that always means a weekend is just around the corner. If you are in that corner I am glad you found today’s show. Many times I have thought, “What is Jello made from?” But — like sausage I really don’t want to know! The tuneage in this show isn’t that hard to figure as to where the ingredients were found. The lyrics from the heart and the melody from the soul. Heart and Soul is a great combo anytime. Enjoy and pass it on! Have a great weekend!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BACK TO SCHOOL PT.2

mp_school_2.jpg

This outing I will musically take on the double-edged sword of being a guy and having girls in the classroom.
I went to Catholic grammar school, and shared classes with girls.
I went to an all-boys Catholic high school, and I am so glad I did.
I owe my education to that, as I never would have learned anything with the combination of my raging high school hormones and the presence of females, lol!
Well, that and the discipline of being taught by the Christian Brothers, who took no crap- precisely what is missing in schools today.
We keep throwing more money at the school system, Johnny still can’t read, and the obvious answer is that lack of discipline.
I can only imagine how many teeth I would have been spitting out if I told, say Brother Kevin to go f— himself!
Anyway, I would have been checking out the female form more than what the teacher was saying.
Probably be concerned with my own appearance too- something that was of no concern to me among a group of other guys.
And judging from what I see of today’s uber-developed, looking-older-than-they-are high school girls it could only be worse.
It wasn’t until college that I was once again in classes with the ladies, and my 2 favorite things of the school day were flirting and lunch.
So the other edge of that sword is that maybe some hottie would make you WANT to go school!
Among the music I will play this chapter is the first song by a duo destined to become immensely famous and popular, but by a different name.
Three different interpretations of an old racy Sonny Boy Williamson song- all done by British artists who loved that American Blues.
A B-side from a former Beatle, and we will go out with another duo, one-hit-wonders, but not the hit.
Oh, and finally ending with another fairly obscure song from a Legend.
Nothing wrong with this episode, in my considered opinion.
You should like it- but what do I know, lol?

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BACK TO SCHOOL PT.1

mp_school_1.jpg

Here’s the beginning of a series I have been thinking about doing for years.
But it would always clash with the Remembrance Of 9/11, and my priorities being what they are, I could never get to do this.
Since I replayed the 5th Anniversary Of Sept. 11th, the way is clear for me to finally take on the theme of Back To School.
This was always the most depressing time of year for me.
The fun was over, and I hated everything about it.
It was only 5 or 6 hours a day, but hell, they were prime hours!
No more playing baseball all day- and the World Series would be coming, back when they played the games in the DAYTIME!
Plus hockey would be starting in a month- what a horrible time to be locked up in school!
And I couldn’t stand those kids who actually looked forward to school starting, those morons, lol!
So after some memories of hanging around the old school, songs for people who felt like I did.
And even a couple for those nitwit others!
If you are anything like me, you will cringe at the memories but enjoy the music, as we go Back To School.

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REPLAYING THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 PT.4 CONCLUSION

mp_911_4.jpg

Our concluding chapter. And I had 18 songs left over that went unplayed.
We will use our Poets to sing about Time- how short it is, and how we must use it as joyfully and wisely as we possibly can. There are no guarantees of a tomorrow.
It will be revealed that I am not a fan of sanitizing the pictures or sounds of the results of those muslim terrorist fanatics- not really a surprise to anyone who knows me.
It happened, and there is no NICE way of remembering it, or talking about it. No way can anyone put a happy face on it. It is now a very real part of our history. It happened!
In troubled, insecure times, people often turn to their Faith- perfectly understandable.
And I said Hope, Faith and Love, so we will mention GOD on the radio (GASP!). Including Sarah Mac Lachlan’s version of the beautiful Prayer Of St. Francis.
And we will not ignore those who feel there is some Master Plan- that all things happen for a reason. I don’t know, but that has some comfort in it also.
We will give the final words about America to Aztec Two Step (slightly abbreviated) and David Crosby.
I am reluctant to say I hope you enjoyed this series of podcasts. That “enjoyed” doesn’t seem to fit.
But I do hope I was able to share some feelings with you. I think we covered enough ground to show that the intention was a sincere and honorable one.
Today is a Day Of Remembrance. God bless America!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REPLAYING THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 PT.3

 mp_911_3.jpg

This will be perhaps a good thing to some.
I guess it depends on whether you feel what I have done so far is valid and some small diversion during this sad weekend. I realize it is only a little radio show!
This time, we open with some proper fanfare.
Then hopefully, a little comfort for those still open wounds.
I will talk about how I pass the site of Ground Zero EVERY time I go to the station- and actually many other times also.
From that Core 13 songs I have spoken of- my gut reactions to those evil bastards- I will FINALLY get around to playing what I felt then was a song of defiance and another of anger- you can’t kill me!
Some thoughts again from our Poets. And how there but for fortune, any of us could have been in those buildings on that infamous day; and now we must hit hard at the battle confronting us.
One of the inescapable things since 9/11, has been that many, and I mean MANY, songs have taken on a new meaning for me. Because of those annoying time constraints, I didn’t get to give a heads up on a Jackson Browne song from 1974. Listen to the words from today’s perspective, and you will be amazed and touched.
And touching you is what I am trying to do.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REPLAYING THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 PT.2

mp_911_2.jpg

Thinking back to September 11, 2001, I was glued to the TV. And for the next…I don’t know, 7-10 days, I was stunned, saddened, shocked, and angry.
I mean raging, blind, revenge-seeking anger.
As a born and bred New Yorker, these evil bastards had attacked my country, my city, my PEOPLE!
During that period, music was the last thing on my mind. But then came the realization that I would be going back to the radio station- what music would I play?
I didn’t want to ignore what had happened. That wouldn’t be honest.
Also came the realization that anger wasn’t simply the answer. The only way out of this was Love.
The idea grew, and certainly Hope and Faith would play major roles in getting through and over this atrocity also.
So I came up with 13 core songs. And I wanted to do the whole hour on those terrorist attacks.
As it happened, I was outvoted. But I did get to play one song that incorporated all 3 of those aforementioned beliefs- in fact, they are all in the title of the song by Steve Forbert.
Looking back five years down the road, given only one to play, it turned out to be maybe the BEST choice of all.
You will hear it, along with our Poets’ thoughts on especially Love in this episode.
Odd, how five years later I am able to do TWO hours of what I wanted to do in the immediate aftermath! Go figure!
Maybe I am just five years more entrenched there, more adamant- and they know how stubborn and nasty I can get, lol!
Here’s Part Two…from the heart.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REPLAYING THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 PT.1

 mp_911_1.jpg

Here is the first in a series of 4 shows I did in 2006- the Fifth Anniversary.
A very personal look at the muslim terrorist attacks on the day of September 11, 2001, the most serious shows I have ever done.
And some of these songs have been waiting to be played since I got my head together after those cowardly acts.
Normally, I go to the radio station on a Tuesday- and that day was a Tuesday- but just by the grace of God, luck, fortune, you pick, I had pre-recorded a show and so I was able to stay in Brooklyn. But the smell of burning, including undoubtedly flesh, wafted out to where I live.
A day I will NEVER forget- I won’t ALLOW it!
I will use the Poets, our Poets, to speak words of Hope, Faith, Love and yes, even Anger.
It is in the LYRICS. This is not background music. They demand your attention. If you cannot give it, don’t bother listening.
For our opening, the eloquent words of NYC Firefighter Mike Moran- words that still hold up for me.
Well said, Mike!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A ROCKOLLECTIONS LOOK AT WOODSTOCK PT.4 FINAL

mp_woodstock_4.jpg

Beginning this our final look at the Woodstock Festival, I will again take you back to WNEW-FM.
In 1969, Rosko was still working the 7 to midnight shift there, so we will hear him briefly sell you on the Festival- followed by another report from their newsman Mike Eisgrau.
I thank Dennis Elsas again for these snippets, and he has a website
www.denniselsas.com that is well worth visiting.
After that, the Band didn’t make onto that old original vinyl album, but we have them here.
A couple from them, starting with a song you should know by Johnny Cash, although I believe it was written by Lefty Frizzell.
I suppose I could look it up, but I am still lazy, lol!
So go ahead, you look it up!
And don’t forget, Woodstock was the Band’s neighborhood- they did Music From Big Pink there.
I’ll have a list of folks who either canceled or declined to play at Woodstock that I am sure you will find very interesting.
Some of the reasons are good ones, some are not.
More music, coming almost full circle, and finally, one of the guys who thought up Woosdstock had an idea as to how he wanted to end the Festival.
He couldn’t…but we can!
I hope you enjoyed our little look at that historic weekend.
Next, something completely different…that’s the plan anyway!

The audio clips used in this series were obtained from the archives of Dennis Elsas of WFUV, and they can be heard there along with much more, at Dennis’ website www.denniselsas.com.
I personally thank him for the memories.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A ROCKOLLECTIONS LOOK AT WOODSTOCK PT.3

mp_woodstock_3.jpg

Just a note before I get into the Woodstock Festival, I was on vacation and completely forgot my 11th anniversary at the in station in late August!
Hard to believe I haven’t ticked them off that badly by now, and further proof none of the people upstairs are listening, lol!
Also odd, that in all those years, I have never done a show on Woodstock.
Moving on to this episode, we’ll stay with one of Engineer Ken’s favorite groups for a while.
Then it is on to one of mine.
Not much more to say, as I am now a confirmed Lazyer…or is that a Lazyist?
Enjoy the music!
One more chapter to go.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A ROCKOLLECTIONS LOOK AT WOODSTOCK PT.2

mp_woodstock_2.jpg

I came back in this half kidding about the name Wavy Gravy.
Engineer Ken told me what his real name was- you will not believe it, lol!
As I mentioned before, the premise of my doing Woodstock was to bring a different look at it.
So the first priority was to NOT play any of the songs that were on the original Woodstock album from 1970.
Remember, that 3-disc LP that was so amazing back then?
I mean, nobody put out 3 vinyl records in one album!
But by now, most people have heard those songs over and over, and I wanted to avoid making you do so again.
However there were necessary exceptions- and you will hear 2 of them in this episode.
To open, I have Richie Havens in his own words, talking about how they wouldn’t let him off the stage.
No one else was prepared to play, and they kept sending him back out there over and over.
And I have a confession to make- I have always done my show as a local one, a show from New York that does not try to be more than it is.
Nowadays there are so many sterile, syndicated shows that go nationwide.
As a result, they aim at such a broad audience that they lose all local color.
I want to be an exception and a throwback to when radio was your friend, and when I say it is a beautiful day I am talking about a beautiful day in New York City.
Even though terrestrially I am on over 70 affiliated stations across North America, never mind the internet where the reach is around the world.
Hell if I thought about that, I might get stagefright, lol!
All of this is leading me back to what was our local FM Rock station WNEW-FM again, and a reporter from there that would only be recalled by us New Yorkers.
His name was Mike Eisgrau, I don’t know if he is still around- but I will play the first of one of his reports filed live from the Woodstock Festival.
Also in this chapter a Bob Dylan song that I have never heard sung by Dylan, not even on bootleg.
Do enjoy our trip, definitely not on LSD, as we get ourselves Back To The Garden!
There are two more of these to come!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A ROCKOLLECTIONS LOOK AT WOODSTOCK PT.1

mp_woodstock_1.jpg

The 40th Anniversary of Woodstock took place while I was on vacation. I was not going to come back and do shows just for that.

But it nagged at me.

So I called Engineer Ken and asked him what he thought about doing it this week.

He was all for it, pointing out that the new movie Taking Woodstock just opened a few days ago, and that was after the anniversary.

I decided to do it, but only if I could bring my own peculiar presentation to it.

Whether that is good or bad is up to you, lol!

The first day featured mostly folk acts, so that is what we will focus on these first two chapters.

That made sense, because they weren’t finished with the stage and sound equipment, and folkies only need a mic and some amps.

We will start before the Festival began however, with an old 1969 commercial on WNEW-FM by legendary Program Director and DJ Scott Muni, one of my heroes.

And take it from there…
