RockRoll360 # 035 - When The Levee Breaks - Pt. 1

When The Levee Breaks - Pt. 1

If it keeps on rainin’, levee’s goin’ to break,
If it keeps on rainin’, levee’s goin’ to break,
When The Levee Breaks I’ll have no place to stay.

When it came to hurricane provisions I was always one of those people
who chuckled at the sight of watching shoppers fill their carts with
water and canned goods.  It would never happen here right?

Those people were just paranoid, buying up all the water and making
the lines at the gas stations too long at every mention of a hurricane.

Then along comes Katrina.

Here is my tribute and remembrance of these terrible days in
New Orleans, La., in August & September of 2005.

Music include —->

LIKE A HURRICANE ( Unplugged )- NEIL YOUNG
STORMY MONDAY - LEE MICHAELS
WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS - LED ZEPPELIN
HERE COMES THE FLOOD - PETER GABRIEL
LOUISIANA 1927 - RANDY NEWMAN
WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS - GREEN DAY
SUICIDAL DREAM ( Acoustic ) - SILVERCHAIR
TROUBLE - RAY LAMONTAGNE
BAREFOOT CHILDREN - JIMMY BUFFET

Sound Bites include —->

In The News Week Of August 28th 2005 - Sound Bite -Computer
Hurricane Katrina To Hit Gulf States - Sound Bite from Eleanor Hall
Stormy Night - Song Sound Bite from Leroy Carr
Hurricane Katrina Hit The Gulf States - Sound Bite from Eleanor Hall
KKND (New Orleans-New Rock-The End)
- Radio I.D. ( Has Been Edited Short)

Correction on Podcast …I mention Hurricane Bob
/ The correct name is Hurricane Bill.

Longtown Sound 559 The Sunday Edition feat. - Jon Adamson, The Bishop’s, The Heartmen, Kelly Price, Bree Noble, Porch Light, Nancy Krebs

Longtown Sound 559

Matthew 28
1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.
10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

ROCKOLLECTIONS: IN PRAISE OF LAZINESS PT.2 END

mp_laziness_2.jpg

Man, I am good at this laziness!
Gonna open the 2nd half with a song that was a big hit in England in the 60’s- not over here.
But if you were listening here in those early FM radio days, you should have no trouble remembering it.
If you had to pick, what is the best time of day to be lazy?
I’ll give you my musical answer.
Later in, I played a song from an album called Twin Sons Of Different Mothers.
I had noticed both Engineer Ken and I were wearing Beatle shirts…different ones, but still…and both black!
So are we Twin Sons Of Different Mothers?
I doubt it, lol!
But THAT was odd- it’s not like I call him and tell him my fashion statement of the day.
This is too much writing for a lazy guy!
Let’s just say I played some damn good music regarding our subject.
And I reverted to an old tradition from when I was a kid and always brought the music to parties, something I have done before on the show, I ended with one of my 2 favorite groups- seemed like a good time to do that again.
Let’s drink to those of who are into sloth, raise a glass to the lazy from birth.
And enjoy the music!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: IN PRAISE OF LAZINESS PT.1

mp_laziness_1.jpg

During my self-imposed exile from the radio station, I became lazy.
As much as I love doing the shows, I enjoyed being lazy- it was fun!
No picking out songs, no mad scrambling for songs…no going into Manhattan in the morning.
And I am still lazy.
That’s enough information- this two-parter is called In Praise Of Laziness.
Think I might have “Lazy” songs?
You’ll just have to listen.
There’s a lot to be said for laziness.
I’m just too lazy to do it here, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.10 CONCLUSION

10

Here at long last is the conclusion of Space: The Final Frontier.
Gonna start this one with a real nice song from a few years ago.
Followed by yet another spacey song from the Byrds.
Some more fascinating trivia. For instance, the Sun contains over 99.8% of the mass in our Solar System- and Jupiter has most of the rest.
Makes us feel kind of small here on earth!
Finally, as promised, the Stars.
I will open up with a song about an artist famous for, among other things, a Starry painting.
Then some directions to a magical place called Neverland.
Next, a guilty pleasure that was an oldie when I started to get old enough to like girls, though not as much as baseball and hockey.
Come to think of it, hockey has never broken my heart, lol!
Upon seeing a picture of her, I did develop a crush on Linda Scott.
And NOW I find out she lived in Queens, New York!
Hell, I could have gone to her house, and received another restraining order!
From there, a far more sophisticated song from a debut album.
As I think I have told you, I place a great emphasis on opening and closing songs.
I started with a President, and will give the final word, after this long journey, to the great Cliff Edwards.
Don’t doubt it, you WILL know him!
I hope I didn’t space you out with this 10 part marathon that I could have easily taken even farther.
And I am most definitely NOT saying I won’t do it again with another topic.
Lastly, thanks Walt.
For the ideas given me, and mostly that I had the opportunity to grow up with and never forget your wholesome and classy productions!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.9

Well, here we are with the next to last chapter.
I am gonna start this one off with a fun TV theme that should have a memory for you.
Later in, a look at the Future, featuring a fairly recent Todd Rundgren song re-mixed by my Texas buddy, JR Claiborn.
Another Future song is next, by a group that used to wear mime or clown makeup in performance, called the Hello People- a far out and rocking song from them.
Oh, and since that was from an old vinyl LP, you will clearly hear the wonderful, refreshing sound of surface noise at the beginning. But hang in there, it will straighten itself out!
After that, some leftovers from the previous chapters.
I will have planetary space trivia throughout.
Coming up next, the conclusion, as we journey to the Stars!

There is a new documentary film about WBCN being produced, entitled “The American Revolution.”  The film is being produced by the Peabody Award-winning Lichtenstein Creative Media. It chronicles WBCN during the years 1968 and 1975, and examines the station’s role in covering and promoting the profound social, political, and cultural changes of that era.

Producers are filming the station’s final days for use in the film, and there’s more about the documentary at www.WBCNthefilm.com

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE:THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.8

Here is another chapter of Space: The Final Frontier- my most ambitious project at least in terms of length.
We will continue now with our Rock & Roll look at Astronauts.
After hearing Spaceman, how about MR. Spaceman?
I will have some Astronaut trivia, such as the ones who died on the Launch Pad, the ones on the last mission to the Moon, etc.
I am still floating in space with the Blue Danube from 2001: A Space Odyssey, and we will be checking back with our favorite non-heroic Spaceman.
Musical guests are suiting up in their helmets and space gear for this episode- so get out your old equipment and see if it still fits, lol!
Some of these songs you may have forgotten, there is one from this decade, and to close this one out, the ultimate Spaceman song.
Next up, we head out to the Stars!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE:THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.7

Well, I am going to finish up the Moon portion of this Space series with what I am calling Kitchen Sink Moon Songs.
Those are Moon songs that didn’t quite fit into any category in our various stops along the way, but are good enough or just plain interesting enough to warrant playing.
We’ll start off with George Wurzbach, who I ALMOST know.
At my TV announcing job, I work with his on-camera wife- a real nice lady!
George, besides his solo career, is also a member of a group called Modern Man- the male answer to the fabulously funny female Four Bitchin’ Babes.
He can write serious, beautiful songs that can tug at your heartstrings. And he can also write songs like this, A Much Better View Of The Moon, that show his funny, twisted way of looking at things.
Gotta admire the guy in this one, he’s got the right attitude- for him the glass is always half FULL!
After that a very short song by Melanie, then one that although I consider myself very well versed in the music of the past, I had never heard nor heard of. And it reached # 8 on the charts in 1957!
Finally, a sound clip from a Beatles appearance on a British TV comedy show, having fun with an old standard.
Heading in a different direction, 2 Space songs that go together, and you will easily hear why.
And I should point out, in the first one the Byrds accurately sing about pyramids instead of monoliths- as they appeared in Arthur C. Clarke’s original short story.
This will set the table for our next subject- Astronauts.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE:THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.6

Before moving on with this chapter of Space, I owed you some ID’s from the previous episode.
The debt will be paid.
And a Shoutout to my buddy Mike Hennessy, for sending me a clean CD copy of a song I only had on vinyl- thanks, pal.
Some more info about our astronauts you may not have known- they had some difficulty getting back in the module with 2 boxes of more than 48 pounds of lunar surface material.
Wait till you hear some of the equipment they tossed out, had to throw away, to make the module lighter for the trip home.
And Aldrin accidentally broke the circuit breaker switch to the MAIN engine for liftoff to get back home.
Nice going Buzz!
But the day was saved with a common item and some good old American ingenuity!
Back to our Proprietary Moon songs, I have a song Johnny Cash and Paul McCartney wrote together while on vacation in Jamaica.
We’ll hear them sing it together.
Now with the sorry state of today’s radio, where else can you hear stuff like that but here at Rockollections?
Then I’ll go Cajun with a great, underrated singer/songwriter, followed by a terrific live rocker by a long lasting band.
Now, I should point out that poetic license allows me to play Moon songs wherein the Moon mentioned could be the name of a bar or a whorehouse.
Where did I put that damned poetic license anyway, lol?
There was one I couldn’t resist playing, that would make my Mom proud. It was # 2 in 1956 amidst all the Elvis and others, as Rock & Roll was starting to really take over the charts.
Don’t get me wrong though. My Mom LOVED Elvis! AND Rock & Roll!
Our astronauts take off leaving behind monitoring devices, an American flag and a plaque.
And to end this one, I thought it might be interesting to play five pieces of music…all instrumentals…that should trigger a mental image in your mind of things relating to Space.
No lyrics, no spoken words!
Let’s see if it works.
More Space coming.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE:THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.5

I really couldn’t wake up the day I recorded this show- and would have preferred staying in bed.
So I needed something to get me Higher & Higher, maybe something along the lines of 10 Billion Butterfly Sneezes, and that is just what this chapter opens with.
I will have more interesting info about the Moon Landing, including NASA sending Neil Armstrong a secret code word to tell him to slow down.
We’ll have a Harry Nilsson song about moonbeams, done by Steve Forbert, from a tribute album to the late Nilsson called For The Love Of Harry.
Buddy Holly after that, with a strange song from him that sounds much older than it is, also dealing with moonbeams and moondreams.
And as long as I was in that period, a great moon oldie.
Putting these shows together and pulling out Moon songs, I noticed how possessive we are about the Moon.
By that I mean, if I look at the Moon from where I am, it becomes a Brooklyn Moon or a New York Moon.
For someone else, it would be wherever THEY are- say, an Atlanta Moon, or a South Carolina Moon, or a Chicago Moon, or a Moon Over Miami- even though we are all looking at the SAME Moon!
So, we will begin a long set of music I am calling Proprietary Moon Songs.
Checking in with some examples, includes another from the early Sun Records (hey, another Moon song from  Sun!).
We will continue with these Proprietary Moon songs next episode- and I had to limit myself- there are dozens of them.
