ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE:THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.4

Continuing to drop trou, and Moon you some more, lol!
Opening up this episode with a song about a comedian, but it also touches on those wackos who think we never really put a Man on the Moon.
Oh ye of little faith!
Then a contribution from a lady regarding a HALF look at the Moon.
I’ll have some more info about the Moon Landing- the surface was very slippery, so LOPING was the preferred method of getting around up there.
Putting this series together, I came to realize how many dozens of versions there were, and very many by rock & rollers, of a song written in 1934.
I picked three to play- one from a contemporary acapella group called Da Vinci’s Notebook, who used to play frequently at New York’s Bottom Line, until the club closed. Haven’t seen them around any more.
The others will be the rocking hit version from 1961 (wonder why there were so many songs about the moon that year?), and lastly one from the early Sun Records label, by a strange looking cat with slick-backed hair and a turned-up collar. He went on to HUGE success, and I am SURE you have heard of him.
Unless you were born yesterday, or live in a vegetative state!
We will go out with some songs about colored Moons.
One from the last album by a guy who had no success while alive, and died in 1974 when he was only 26- but now has developed a huge cult following.
The other from an ex-Monkee. Yeah, that’s right, lol!
Stick with me, fellow Space Travelers. Our journey is not yet halfway through.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLE LANDING-SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.3

There was a Captain Video years ago, so this is Captain Audio speaking…
We will continue our journey into space with some more songs about the Moon, as this whole series was inspired by the 1st Moon Landing on July 20, 1969.
Now, everybody knows that George Harrison, with the Beatles, did the great Here Comes The Sun on the Abbey Road album.
But I am sure fewer people are aware that he recorded a song called Here Comes The Moon some years later, as a solo artist.
I will open with that.
And one Beatle calls for another, this one doing a great flip side of a single.
Then we will turn our attention to some historical clarification.
It appears all these years later that Neil Armstrong correctly spoke, as he has insisted, those first words on the moon.
There is recent evidence supporting that he properly said, “One small step for (A) man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Without that crucial “A”, it is redundant- and he was to some extent criticized for it.
Wonder what I would have said?
Probably something along the lines of “Holy crap!”- but not precisely “crap”!
Next we will take a brief look at the effects the Full Moon has on people- and watch out for those shadows too.
Then, the Moon can fill some folks up with so much love, they want to dance by the light of it.
So two songs, coincedentally both from 1961- the first of which just plain makes me ROCK!
Oh man, it makes ME wanna dance around!
In closing, we will note that Armstrong said he had no trouble moving around up there. Despite being 1/6 Earth’s gravity, it was easier than the simulations he had been put through.
And it is now official- this will be the longest and most ambitious Theme series I have ever attempted.
As seemingly endless as Space itself…oh I hope you don’t really feel that way, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EAGLE LANDING- SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.2

On July 20, 1969, Man walked on the moon- the first time in history anyone had walked anywhere other than on earth.
What a proud day for me, and I am sure for millions!
Now, I don’t recall this being mentioned (my memory isn’t THAT good), it turns out there were a few problems.
The computer came up as being over-tasked, wasting usage on radar which was unneeded, and activating program alarms during descent.
That distracted the astronauts from the scene outside, and when Neil Armstrong looked out, he saw that the computer was directing them to a large rock-filled crater.
Using manual controls, he guided the module to a safer landing spot.
Remember now, those were 1969 computers!
What would you do, since no one had ever done it before, after you came down the ladder onto the surface of the moon?
I would probably stand there and see if I started sinking, like in quicksand. If not, I would start walking.
So, songs for both Standing and Walking On The Moon.
We’ll hear a song written by Donovan especially for Mary Hopkin, on her 1969 debut album.
After that, I will begin to close this episode with a news anchor, a politician and a poet!
Then something for the fact it was a victory for all Mankind!
And the final song is plainly and simply a great one.
I hope you will come back and join me as our musical exploration of Space continues.
There is much more to come…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EAGLE LANDING- SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER PT.1

Here is the first chapter of a BIG series, maybe the biggest I have ever done, inspired by the July 20, 1969 Moon Landing and in tribute to those marvelous words 40 years ago (FORTY, is that possible?), “The Eagle has landed!”.
Space: The Final Frontier.
When I do these Theme Shows and Series, I place a great emphasis on what I will Begin with, and End with.
Sometimes the beginning comes to me first, sometimes the end and I work backwards, and sometimes they both come to me simultaneously.
In this particular instance, I immediately had a beginning, but then another one made itself necessary.
Why not have 2 beginnings then?
And we will. The first beginning is rather unusual for a rock show, but we are free-form, remember!
But then a very strange thing happened during the playing of the final song in that 2nd beginning set.
The music played but NO vocals!
Unexplained ghosts in the machine, or extraterrestrial aliens? I have no idea.
For our purposes, I have inserted the song here, so you will hear it in its entirety with the vocals.
However, you will also hear me talking about that mysterious lack of voices that forced Engineer Ken and I to quickly go to another song. Pay it no mind.
Very very weird!
I will be giving you some scientific data regarding the mission, easy to understand and hopefully interesting.
Then the Moon Landing itself!
It occurs to me that I never identified the last song of this Part One. It is titled Armstrong, Aldrin & Collins, done by the Byrds.
Stick with this series, it is going to be a bumpy, fun ride.
I promise, you will be hearing the most amazing and eclectic music!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MY RETURN, AND BACK DOING IT AGAIN PT.2 END

We return for this 2nd half with more “return” songs, lol.
Including one from an ex-Beatle that for some reason was never released, but will blow your mind!
After that, I knew that in my self-exile I had missed an entire season, Spring, by just a couple of days.
For all the Hallmark card feelings about Spring, it is often forgotten there was a time that for the Native American Indians in many parts of the country, to have SURVIVED the Winter was a cause for celebration.
Just plain being glad you had made it to Spring and weren’t dead!
So a song about that, written by a Cree Indian jazz musician named Jim Pepper, but the version I’ll play was taken over and done much better by a folk-rock duo.
This song and I have been friends for a very long time- since the early 70’s- so I hope you like it!
And bear in mind when this was broadcast, June 23rd was just 3 days into Summer.
I’ll end by going out pretty much the way we came in.
You may have noticed that I am the lone holdout when it comes to printing playlists of these shows.
I don’t believe in them!
There are maybe half a dozen people in radio that I like to listen to- who of course share my “anything goes” attitude about what to play.
And I most certainly do NOT want to know IN ADVANCE what they are going to play.
The chance to bring back a forgotten song long dormant in your memory, or one you have never heard but catches your ear- these are the things that are the most delightful to me, and why I guard my free-form status so closely.
Why in the hell would I want to tell you what I am going to play before I do so- and why would you bother listening if I did?
The element of surprise or anticipation is key- this show is not background music while you do something else, and I am not wallpaper hanging there so long you don’t notice it anymore!
Let’s take another ride together.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MY RETURN, AND BACK DOING IT AGAIN! PT.1

I have mentioned it here before, so some of you may know that I had a problem at the radio station where I have been for almost 11 years.
Serious enough to make me stay home and not return for four months- stubborn bastard that I can be, lol!
I don’t want to get into the details, but it had to do with my doing Talk and not Music for cost reasons.
There is enough mindless chatter on the radio without mine.
Well I guess I won, because I came back, I am not doing talk, and I continue to have no restrictions whatsover about the music I play- very rare indeed on today’s computerized playlist radio.
Chalk one up for the iconoclasts.
During those 4 months, I was sending out Encores of shows I have already done, and I will continue to do so when I think it appropriate.
It’s one of the perks of having a stockpile.
But here is the first truly NEW show since early February- and it is already old, lol!
It was broadcast June 23, 2009, and I believe in the next chapter you will hear me refer to Summer having begun just days ago, which it had.
I didn’t want to interrupt the Salute To Fathers and the Celebration Of America series I had going, so I held this back.
Finally here it is for your listening pleasure…hopefully!
Now it was suggested to me that I not say anything about my lengthy absence- typical of radio, people come and go without comment.
But that’s not my style, I consider my listeners my friends, and I would not insult their intelligence by ignoring the fact I was missing for so long.
So I dedicated the hour to the fact that I had been gone, now I was back, and tested the freedom to play what I want by choosing songs about returning to places.
I also wanted the people who cared enough to be concerned, to know that my not having been there for so long had absolutely nothing to do with any health problems on my part, and felt it proper to ask both aloud and musically about their state of health.
So that’s the background for this, the first of two parts.
And I had enough time away to think of the most PERFECT song to open with- about being Back Where You Started and Doing It All Again!
And I went from there…!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA PT.3

These next final episodes in the Celebration Of America, will not all be so warm and fuzzy.
But make no mistake, I LOVE my country!
First off in Pt. 3, a good long set of music regarding the American Dream- which will include a duet by Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan that you may not have been aware of.
I have some provocative quotes regarding our independence from England.
So it is only fitting that musically We Give The British Their Say!
As always, I hope to surprise you, make you smile, and make you think with the song selections.
A bit more Tory sympathy will follow in the next chapter.
As well as our Grand Finale!
Oh, and I thought you might be interested in what happened to those brave signers of the Declaration Of Independence:

A small group of men dedicated themselves to a higher purpose, an ideal they believed in so greatly, they signed their name to its expression and in doing so put their very lives at risk.
Never has a simple act of signing one’s name carried such weight, such a profound commitment.
By signing the Declaration of Independence, 56 men stood in direct defiance of the British government.
They became marked men, and willingly so.
Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence:
Five were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes burned to the ground.
Two lost sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, and two more had sons captured.
Nine fought and died in the Revolutionary War.
The signers were flesh and blood, mortal men with a divinely-inspired aim.
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists, eleven were merchants, and nine were farmers and large plantation owners.
They were well educated, smart enough to know that by signing the Declaration of Independence, they were signing their own death warrants.
They did it anyway, and God bless them for it.
In the words of the Signers themselves, “For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”
Their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor!
The Signers asked for nothing in return for their pledge, but I say that we show our thanks with a pledge of our own:
To remember, to be grateful, and to carry on in their spirit.
America is the greatest country this world has ever and will ever know, and it will stay that way so long as “we the people” remember that just like in 1776, it’s US that surrounds them, and we’ll never back down!
God bless America.

Just like the music you hear in these shows- all indie tunes are top shelf, inspected, ear-picked and deserve a listen and a comment. The artists at the links below are there for a reason. Longtown Sound 542 4th of July Happy Birthday America!

Longtown Sound 542

I AM AN AMERICAN

I AM an AMERICAN. I am not white, I am not black, I am not red, I am not yellow. I AM an AMERICAN, not because of my religious or philosophical beliefs but because of principals and ideals that were handed down to me by my forefathers. I am not rich but neither am I poor because I AM an AMERICAN and I have the right to pursue life, liberty and happiness.

I am not a REPUBLICAN, DEMOCRAT, MODERATE, INDEPENDENT, or LIBERTARIAN. I am not a conservative nor am I a liberal. I AM an AMERICAN and I AM FREE to go where I want to go, to do what I want to do and to say what I want to say but I do not believe I have the right to harm my fellowman or indulge in conversation or perform malicious acts that would dishonor my God, Family or Country.
I AM an AMERICAN not because I live in America but because America lives in me.

I am not free because of our President, Senate, Congress, Supreme Court or Free Press. I am Free because BRAVE and COURAGEOUS men and women endured hardships and made many sacrifices to preserve the Way of Life our Founding Fathers birthed when they drafted and adopted our Great Constitution and started this Nation on the pathway of Democracy.

I am forever indebted to our MILITARY, past and present, for it is they who have fought, shed blood and even died, to protect and defend our sacred homeland. It is our Military that should be honored as Heroes because it is they who will battle forces that would try to take away my Freedom and deny me the God given Right to say I AM an AMERICAN.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA PT.2

Moving on with Part Two of our expansive Celebration Of America, we make a side trip to Broadway for a famous musical- don’t get nervous, it was a COOL one, lol!
Then, does anyone remember the KBC Band (Kantner, Balin, Casady)?
Well, we are gonna play them.
We will have a little more trivia.
And then a good long set of music about People-Americans!
We will conclude this chapter with a song that was a huge hit in the 60’s, that you probably haven’t heard in a LONG time, and maybe were glad you hadn’t, lol!
However, it does meet our requirement for having AMERICA in it.
Frankly, I like it- and we are indebted to these select brave men!
We are at the halfway mark.
Have a GREAT 4th Of July everyone- and keep all those fingers!!!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA PT.1

This is an Encore of a series I did back in 2006, when the 4th Of July fell on Tuesday, the day my radio show is broadcast.
Therefore, add 3 years and this is our great country’s 233rd Birthday.
So let the musical Celebration Of America begin!
And a, shall we say…surprising beginning it will be.
Come Saturday, those 233 years ago, the greatest document ever written, the Declaration Of Independence, was adopted by the Continental Congress.
With the singer/songwriters and poets of our songs we will take a broad look at the U.S.A.- warts and all.
And I should point out, ALL songs played in this series, and there will be 4 parts, will have the word “AMERICA” in them!
We will be patriotic, but not always warm and fuzzy- confronting some issues that may make our nation less than perfect.
But who is perfect? Certainly no other countries are.
Happy Birthday America!
Keep on rockin’ in the free world!

Mike
