ROCKOLLECTIONS: A LOTTA LITTLE PT.1

Rockollections

Well it is about time we honored one of the Founding Fathers of Rock & Roll!

And it’s reigning madman.

I am talking about Little Richard, or Richard Penniman.

But the reason it took over 10 years was because he has re-recorded his songs so many times, you never knew which version you would be getting.

Rock & Roll fans knew which were the originals though, and I can assure you I will play the REAL, authentic Specialty label recordings of his many many hits here.

It took me a while to catch up with them all.

I will open with the most frenetic Ready Teddy the world has ever heard (with the possible exception of Buddy Holly’s take), and during this and the next chapter I will undoubtedly play some Little Richard you have never heard.

I gave Engineer Ken a few choices, and he picked Richard’s interpretation of the old Wilbert Harrison chestnut, Kansas City.

Listen to this and you will hear how the Beatles got THEIR version of the song!

Unfortunately, the biography I read from was poorly written, and I apologize for that.

But you will discover that Richard used to watch the medicine men at carnivals and used that to forge his style.

He was also greatly influenced by singer, and perhaps an even greater madman, Esquerita.

I would think probably most people have never heard of him, so maybe someday I’ll do a show on him.

For now, please join me for some timeless, high-energy music that without question was vital in the creation of what came to be known as Rock & Roll.

As crazy egotistical as Little Richard can be at times, he does have the credentials.

Mike

RockRoll360 #003 - The Unexpected Pt. 1

 The UnExpected

Welcome back Podsters - Now that you know what Underground Radio was like back during the late 60’s and passed on to the early 70’s from the previous Podcast.

 The influence that radio WBCN Boston  & WNEW in NYC had me changed and loved this type of radio from Top 40 straight to FM Underground in one big giant step. I always wanted to be in radio ( Programing ) but things hasn’t worked out the way I planned. Therefore I really never fulfilled my dreams.

For the longest time I always made Cassettes/CD compilations from 1972 on. It always had the mix of old songs with the current new music - In the words of  Mike Pell “The WORLD is our playlist- Enjoy”  Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t mix the old with the new. A great exclamation of this type of radio can be found in detail on Mike Pell’s ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE FALL OF FM RADIO Chapter 6.

You gotta listen to The Ballard Of The Sandman. Great stuff !

The closest I landed in radio was when I was a on air as DJ at Franklin Dean Jr. College in Franklin, Mass., one hour a week. Had quite a following I might add.  Who knows? This podcast might lead to bigger & brighter things. ( I can dream can’t I )

Again I can never say enough to Unc & Mike   Thanks for sharing the site with me. Hopefully I’ll will make you happy with these shows and hope to continue for a long, long, time.

My shows tend to be like the New England weather - If you don’t like a song or show, just wait a minute it will change for the better. Okay already, enough of that and lets get on with the music.

Here is a brand spanking new 360 Compilation I’d like to share with you. Hopefully you’ll like it. This one is called The Unexpected because of a certain song that you will find on Part 2 this coming Tuesday. A gem below is the song by Jeff Beck feat. Imogen Heap and a AAA hit by Lilly Allen.

DRIVING WHEEL - ALBERT KING
BABA O’RILEY  - THE WHO
ALL THE SAME - THE SICK PUPPIES
RUN THAT BODY DOWN - PAUL SIMON
WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME - U2
BLANKET - JEFF BECK feat. IMOGEN HEAP
SUMMER SKIN -  DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE
QUEER - GARBAGE
CHAIN GANG - SAM COOKE
THE FEAR - LILLY ALLEN

Sound Bites include ::::::

Needle to the end of the record - Comedy from “Stevens & Grdnic”
I am speaking into the dam phone - Sound Bite from the movie  “Nothing In Common”
WBCN - Big Mattress Promo - Sound Bite from classic WBCN radio
WBCN - Lunchtime song Working - Sound Bite from classic WBCN radio

RockRoll360 - American Revolution: Beginnings of Underground Rock Radio WBCN Pt. 2

Now here is Part 2 of this special. WBCN Radio in Boston
Make sure you check out the LOL ! bite with Captain Squid and the song Marie LaPeau. Classic Underground Radio at its best.

And a note for Charles . Paper towels to clean records….I don’t know about that Charles.

Music includes ::::
Marie LaPeau - Salloom Sinclair & The Mother Bear
Susie Q - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Black Magic Woman - Fleetwood Mac
( Fact ::: They wrote the song )
Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
I Thank You - Sam & Dave

Also a bonus ::::
A montage of WBCN sound bites which include Matt Segal.

This show was originally broadcast and placed on cassette. I re-recorded and segued the music from Cd’s to the original broadcast and put on to CD. Nobody likes that background hiss & static. The aircheck part of the show is really not that bad. Then I transfered to the MP3 format for this Podcast .

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FINDING THE LOST PLANET AIRMEN PT.2 END

Rockollections

First off, a hearty welcome to WLSO.FM to Mike Andrade.His show is a lot like mine…but very different, lol!

In truth, I have known him since before his first ever show, and what he does is excellent- plus I have always liked New England.

We both share an anti-radio love for radio!

Give him a break and a listen, as he is doing some real bright things with music and the other things he weaves in on his Rock & Roll 360.

Getting on to Part Two of the Commander, we open with a song and an observation that there is a whole group of people (older mostly) who would have no knowledge of the significance of the title “(Down To) Seeds & Stems Again”.

Like say, my Mom, lol!

It is about a guy having one helluva bad day!

Next, Cody & The Airmen rock up a very old song, one that goes back to the generation I just mentioned, and even further. Followed by Truck Drivin’ Man. And by the way, the Commander is still touring and releasing records.

Then we get joyously politically incorrect, as I LOVE to do, with Smoke Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette).

And I am collecting songs for a future show where the singer mentions his own name in them. This is one.

We leave Cody with a number called Too Much Fun.

And the Mike Pell Moment Of Clarity- “Is that POSSIBLE, too much fun? Nah!”

Finally, when I originally did this show, the final episodes of the Sopranos were finally starting to air- so a nod to that phenomenon with a song about a hit man.

I wanted to also play one about a hit woman too- but, alas, no time for it.

Remind me, and I’ll do it sometime. And it is by the unlikely Graham Nash!

Hoping you enjoy this one, even with just seeds and stems.

Mike

RockRoll360 - American Revolution: Beginnings of Underground Rock Radio WBCN Pt. 1

wbcn1.jpg

Hello Everybody - I’m the new kid on the block. Podcasting from the
City Of Woonsocket, Rhode Island up here in New England.
I would like to say thanks to Uncleshag & Mike Pell for posting my shows on WLSO.FM.

What you’re going to find on this Podcast is an Eclectic intelligent rock, programmed by Michael J. Andrade.  Programming is a cross between
Classic Underground & AAA Radio format. You’ll find strange oddities whether it be sound bites, radio station I.D’s and jingles and comedy.

Sometimes there are a string of themed selections. Hopefully I can
keep the genuine expertise that Unc & Mike has and make you the audience keep coming back for more. Updates will most likely be on Tuesdays & Fridays

What else can I say? You will see I have a love for music 1929 through the years of 2009. I also have a love for radio - Especially the days of the classic Underground Rock Radio. So Enjoy, Pass, & Rock On.

I got to put aside the 360 Format for this one, because we are gonna visit the years 1968 & 1969 for the next 80 minutes with a program called An American Revolution. Here is a program I recorded way back off the airwaves March 15th,1988. WBCN was doing an anniversary show on the last 20 years BCN as we know it was on the air as a rock radio station. (Today its been 41 years and one month) Great stuff from this show which includes hippie laced radio commercials and of course the broadcast of the transition and first rock song played that night at 10PM.

A lot of great stories and clips and stories from the early days with Charles Laquidara ( your host & who was still on air with BCN in 1988 ) Tommy Hadges —– Joe Rogers aka. Mississippi Harold Wilson — Ken Shelton —- Eddie Gordesky Ron Della Chiesa —–Tammy Heidi —- Peter Wolf ——Frank Zappa —–Captain Squid —– Devine —– This show was originally broadcast and placed on cassette. I re-recorded / and segued the music from Cd’s to the original broadcast and put on to CD. Nobody likes that background hiss & static. The aircheck part of the show is really not that bad. Then I transfered to the MP3 format for this Podcast .

Music includes ::::: Crown Of Creation - Jefferson Airplane Itchycoo Park -The Small Faces I Feel Free - Cream Ballad Of A Thin Man - Bob Dylan Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan ( note to Charles >>>> Jimmy Page on Guitar not Jeff Beck ) Max Yasgur Going Up The Country - Canned Heat
Here’s a short story about WBCN’s beginings…. Before the middle 1960s, a radio station which was called WBCN played classical music exclusively. The call letters stood for the Boston Concert Network.

One of the on-air personalities at that time was Ron Della Chiesa, who also served as music host and program director. Della Chiesa is still active in classical music broadcasting on WGBH. The station slowly began to change to an ‘underground’ music format on the night of March 15, 1968. The first song played that evening to usher in the new format and slogan ‘American Revolution’ was “I Feel Free” by the rock group Cream. At first the new ‘ American Revolution’ format was only heard during the overnight hours, but by the summer of 1968 it encompassed the entire 24 hour programming day. As a part of their new format, WBCN began supporting non-mainstream investigative reporting and such novel concepts as a show oriented toward prison inmates, health warnings about the hazards of street drugs, and live updates on the traffic problems at Woodstock.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FINDING THE LOST PLANET AIRMEN PT.1

Finding The Lost Planet Airmen Part 1

If you are not familiar with Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, you should be in for a treat!

For openers, I decided to let the emcee at a live concert introduce this band- and kick us off with some Good Rockin’ Tonight.

Then something I no longer do- drinking your way into getting Lost In The Ozone.

Luckily for all, we found them, lol.

I always say that sooner or later, every good rock & roll band or artist gets around to doing a Buddy Holly song (imagine if Buddy hadn’t died at 22?). Well, the Commander and His Airmen are no exception.

A first-rate version of some very early Holly, called Midnight Shift.

Followed immediately by an equally rousing interpretation of Eddie Cochran’s Twenty Flight Rock.

Some good old GOOD OLD!

Then one I thought Engineer Ken would like, as he is getting heavy into Bluegrass music.

After that the band’s biggest hit, a Top Ten song in 1972, Hot Rod Lincoln.

Closing things out this Part One, we have some live doo-wop sounds from the band and yet another rouser called Rock That Boogie.

A surprising amount of terrific music from a forgotten band.

And we ain’t through yet!

To be continued…

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A TOWN WITHOUT PITNEY PT.2- CONCLUSION

Well here is Part Two and conclusion of Gene Pitney.

But first, I promised a good friend of mine I would put in a plug for an Art Gallery Exhibition.

The artist is named Evie Tirado and she is VERY good.

So if you can get to Brooklyn, her showing is at Shoptalk & Art Gallery, 35 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY- it is across the street from BAM (the Brooklyn Academy of Music), and runs from April 23 through April 30.

I highly recommend it!

We will start this concluding episode with a song that at the beginning always reminds me of Down In The Boondocks. See what you think.

We’ll talk about Pitney’s Rolling Stones connection, his influence on DAVID BOWIE (particularly on Changes) and play songs you may have forgot existed.

One that hits home for me on this unsettled night is I’m Gonna Be Strong.
Also one called Just One Smile, that I think I remember being done by someone else, but can’t put my finger on it.

If you know, please write me here.

It’s a real pretty sound that oddly co-existed with all the psychedelia of 1967. Probably why I love that year so much- anything was acceptable.

He died of natural causes at the age of 66.

A little young for those natural causes if you ask me.

We will go out with an unreleased Rolling Stones track from 1964, where he purportedly plays the piano, and Phil Spector is in on the session too. Some real nice jamming!

And another Stones connection is he had a fling with Marianne Faithfull.

Way to go my man Gene!!!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A TOWN WITHOUT PITNEY PT.1

Well, I think I’ll keep you guessing on this one, although there is a huge clue in the title of the episode.
This time we will feature an artist who:
Was a master of teenage romantic angst;
Along with Roy Orbison brought orchestral pop into Rock & Roll;
Was one of the era’s best songwriters, with Hello Mary Lou, He’s A Rebel, Rubber Ball, etc.;
Was an early proponent of “countrypolitan” music;
Was among the first to introduce Eastern elements into pop, well before the Beatles;
Was one of the first to record Jagger/Richards & Randy Newman compositions;
Was an early protege of Phil Spector;
Produced and played all the instruments and voices on his debut hit single;
Played the maracas on the Rolling Stones version of Not Fade Away;
Sang the title song for two classic movies;
Was the first teen idol to perform at the Oscars;
Had a song he SANG prevented from reaching # 1 on charts by a song he WROTE;
Was deservedly inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002.
Figured it out?
PLAY the answer!
Oh, and I finally confused the radio with the podcast. Listen at the break, as I say “Rockollections” instead of “Rock Lives” (hate that name!)

ROCKOLLECTIONS: AS THE CROW FLIES- SHERYL THAT IS PT.2- AND HAPPY EASTER

4 Hares Meet

We will open up with a Sheryl Crow song that is a little too personal to me, lol!

Then things get ugly after a faux pas by Crow on the Letterman show.

When asked if a song was autobiographical, she replied yes.

That didn’t sit too well with the Tuesday Night Music Club, who felt they had more input than she did.

Related or unrelated, a member committed suicide, and another died with that nutty auto-erotic asphyxiation.

There Goes The Neighborhood.

Despite all the tragedy and misspeaking, Crow won more Grammys- perhaps from Soaking Up The Sun.

Following those, yet another Grammy, but from an album that failed to go Gold.

Having some writer’s block, Crow produced some songs for Stevie Nicks and did a duet with Kid Rock.

Which I will play.

In concluding, and for this Holy Week, I thought it might be fun to play a couple of HUGE hit songs that were about God. But by the composers themselves, the writers of them!

Well there was only time for one of them, but I invite you to give a listen to Eric Bazilian, who is/was a member of the Hooters.

A song that for me, raises valid theological questions and forces you to look inside yourself.

And check out the Beatles references he throws in the song, absent naturally from the hit version- anybody for some “Cranberry Sauce/I buried Paul”?

This is the better of the two I wanted to play, but I’ll get to that other one.

Happy Easter Everyone!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: AS THE CROW FLIES- SHERYL, THAT IS PT.1!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: AS THE CROW FLIES- SHERYL, THAT IS!

It has been a while since we featured a female, so it is Sheryl Crow.

She became huge in the 90’s- not physically, although I think Linda Ronstadt did, lol!

She wrote her 1st song at 13, was a backup singer on a Michael Jackson tour, and ditched her first album.

Interesting enough?

Had a big summer hit in 1994, and won 3 Grammys (or are they Grammies?).

And let’s not forget the Tuesday Night Music Club, which she later threw into a tizzy.

This is the first of two parts, and I will end this chapter with a Double Play.

Hey, it’s almost baseball season!
