ROCKOLLECTIONS: SONGS FOR APRIL FOOLS PT.2 END

 Songs For Fools 2

I will open the concluding half of our Songs For Fools with one about a guy so dopey he doesn’t even know when to come in out of the rain- or so the expression goes, right?
Then I have a Contrast- 2 versions of the same song (which I would be shocked if you didn’t know), and both of note.
First, after hearing the single for so many years, you will find the longer beginning of the LP version very strange.
Then an unreleased interpretation of that same song by a BIG name group (some guy named Keith Richards does some of his rare lead singing).
After that, a song I HAD to play, or insult my pal, Mike Hennessy.
I don’t remember where or how he found this song, but it was a Top 10 song and I had never heard it!
Just goes to show you, there are little gems out there each of us for some reason has never heard.
Oh, and I also didn’t know the microphone was ON! For the longest time.
Anybody who has been on the radio knows we are constantly clearing our throats for that wonderful rich sound, lol!
Well, I coughed, and Engineer Ken and I just looked at each other like a bomb had exploded!
It was pretty funny, and I don’t have to tell you to listen for it- you will hear it easily enough, lol!
No question, I am a full-time fool, and don’t have to work at it.
I have a song to prove that not just men are fools, women can excel in that department too.
And I will give the final words to the world’s greatest band ever, and a guy you’ll know named Cliff Edwards.
Happy April Fool’s Day to All Of Us Fools!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: SONGS FOR APRIL FOOLS PT.1

 Songs For Fools 1

I got off to a rocky start on this one, guess I was anxious to get going on this April 1st, lol.
These two Pods were a lot of fun to do, and if you don’t suspect anything yet, well the 3rd song I played should explain it all.
I intend to give you some “Oh Wow” moments with this two-parter, those songs just below the consciousness that haven’t been heard in a long time but are so enjoyable to welcome back.
Everybody at various points in their life acts like a fool.
And from the earliest days of Rock & Roll right up to today, there have been songs about them.
No FOOLing!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE PT.4 & FINAL

Here is the last chapter in our series commemorating the Anniversary of the first call made on the Telephone.

We are at the point where Alexander Graham Bell exhibits his invention to the world.

Naturally Big Business enters the picture in the form of Western Union and tries to take it away.

It was the first of many legal challenges, all of which Bell won.

He was barely into his 30’s when he had his success, never stopped coming up with new, helpful inventions and when he finally died in 1922, ALL phones around our nation stopped for a silent minute.

Among the topics we will cover musically are my pet peeve, that bane of mankind, the Cell Phone; the OPPOSITE of that with a Private Conversation, by someone who has been surprising me with how good he is; a very short phone song by Lou Reed from my neck of the woods; an oldie that will have those memory cells jumping, advising not to do what usually happens to me, lol; at least the 2nd most famous, and another contender for MOST famous, rock & roll phone call.

And to close it all out, simply the best reason you could ever have to make a telephone call.

Hope you enjoyed your time on the Phone with me!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE PT.3

Here is the beginning of the second of 2 shows originally done in 2006.

Moving along with our Telephone adventure, I will go off on my discourse about how there are time limits regarding how late you can call people, depending on how good a friend they are.

And I will play a couple of songs relating to just that discourse.

We’ll have some more info about Alexander Graham Bell- did you know Helen Keller dedicated her autobiography to him?

Next I will tackle another telephone gripe with a long set of music on the subject of…OPERATORS.

And we’ll finish this chapter off with the story of that 1st historic phone call.

For a long time now I have said there is a way to present music in an intelligent fashion, unfortunately it is not IN fashion.

But sometimes playing song A followed by song B (and maybe C, D, and E), you can give them both or all greater meaning. That is what is attempted and intended here.

Get on the bus with me, and I will take you somewhere!

It calls for conscious listening, not background music.

What I play is not wallpaper, nor will I ever be just a jukebox playing unrelated songs.

This is not for everyone- either hate it or love it, it is not mediocre.

That said, naturally I relish people who do get it, and enjoy it.

I LOVE it when people anticipate what I will play next, or scold me for NOT playing a particular song they feel should have belonged in there.

I usually have a reason, maybe time is a factor, or I simply don’t have the song- but occasionally they come up with something I hadn’t thought of, and I take great pleasure in the chastisement, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE PT.2

I’ll open this one with a couple of ID’s I owe you from our last meeting. Moving on with our story of Alexander Graham Bell, we find he was a child prodigy, and also that had he not mistranslated some German, he may not have continued his experiments and so enthusiastically pursued the telephone. This episode will include some songs whose titles are phone numbers; Woody Allen; a phone annoyance (with much more of those upcoming); a song entitled Alexander Graham Bell that I was informed of by my British buddies Kaz & Shaz; as well as the Electric Light Orchestra; and Joe Tex.

Please keep your quarters, this is a free call.
Operators are standing by, and if you act now…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE PT.1

Mike Pell's Rockollection

Here is a two-parter, or a four-parter here, that I did in 2006 noting the 130th Anniversary Of The Patent For The Telephone on March 7, 1876- perhaps the world’s greatest invention.
Three days later, March 10, 1876, was the Anniversary Of The First Telephone Call- from Alexander Graham Bell to his assistant, Mr. Watson.
Well, make those 133rd Anniversaries now, these just recent March dates
All the communications we have today, including these computers, can be directly traced back to the telephone.
So, the first of 4 episodes commemorating that day in history with all Telephone Songs- from all over the gamut of Rock.
I will begin the fascinating story of Alexander Graham Bell.
And this Part One will include the most famous telephone call in rock & roll history; maybe the 2nd most obscure Beatles song, as it was only the flip side of a single and never on an album; a phone call to the Spirit World; a warning about the horror of losing a phone number; and the ORIGINAL version of another famous musical phone call.
This series is as good as anything I have ever done.
Don’t hang up on me!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2008 PT.6

mp_tribute_6.jpg

It’s Part Six of this series, and well, I am not sure how to put this…
The Network I do my show from is in a state of flux, and I have seen this coming.
While I understand their point of view and problems, I will not be returning to the Guild for at least the next few weeks.
Engineer Ken (who for months has had his hours cut) and I are confident that things will be resolved.
If not, and know this, my little Rockollections show will continue- perhaps from home, and without Ken and all the bells and whistles of the studio, but with less time constraints and no change in the quality of the music, the choices, or how they are presented.
I only know one way to play music, and once it’s out you can’t get the toothpaste back in the tube!
So beginning next week, I’ll dust off some old shows and bring them back for an encore- many people have never heard them and some I am extremely proud of- until I settle in to new surroundings, or go back to where I have been for over 10 years.
As my Mom would say, “We shall see what we shall see.”
This time, we finish June and July and get into August.
To be continued…one way or another!

This series is not morbid nor maudlin, it is rather a celebration of the lives of those we lost in the previous year- in this case 2008.
Sort of an Irish Wake!
At least SOME of these people should have touched you in some way, shape or form, and made your life a bit happier and more pleasant.
I will be dealing with the notable or should be noted.
For the musical folks who passed on, they are deserving of one more play, at the very least.
And we will deal with other cultural figures as well, with some hopefully appropriate music for them.
You are welcome, encouraged even, to anticipate or second-guess my own musical choices!

In this sixth, and final new episode for a while, those selected are:
Jim McKay
George Carlin
Dody Goodman
Larry Harmon (Bozo the Clown)
Les Crane
Jo Stafford
Isaac Hayes
They can’t give any more than they have already given us.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2008 PT.4

 mp_tribute_4.jpg

Opening up Part 4, I think I owe you an apology.
A number of people have written to me about that being Connie Francis and NOT Doris Day in the previous episode.
And I am beginning to doubt it myself- the more I listen, the more I have to agree.
I got that song from a homemade cassette tape, with an apparently incorrect list.
So, thanks to all those sharp-eared people for pointing that out to me!
We will do more April and get into May this time out.
And we will be all over the place again!
Including a song for my pal, Mike Hennessy- a big Eddy Arnold fan.

This series is not morbid nor maudlin, it is rather a celebration of the lives of those we lost in the previous year- in this case 2008.
Sort of an Irish Wake!
At least SOME of these people should have touched you in some way, shape or form, and made your life a bit happier and more pleasant.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2008 PT.3

mp_tribute_3.jpg

Here we are at Part 3, and it is an odd one even by my standards, lol!
And every year, it takes me couple of shows to realize that somewhere in this series I will be the Bearer Of Bad News- that I will be the one in the uncomfortable position of informing you that someone you liked has died.
Don’t Kill The Messenger!
There is a small consolation flip-side to that however, and I will make my case.
We will finish March 2008 and get into April.
Hope you enjoy this one…it is VERY free-form and all over the place!

This series is not morbid nor maudlin, it is rather a celebration of the lives of those we lost in the previous year- in this case 2008.
Sort of an Irish Wake!
At least SOME of these people should have touched you in some way, shape or form, and made your life a bit happier and more pleasant.

And we will deal with other cultural figures as well, with some hopefully appropriate music for them.

In this third episode, those selected are:
Jeff Healey
Ivan Dixon
Arthur C. Clarke

Neil Aspinall
