ROCKOLLECTIONS - REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN PT.1 2006 VERSION

Mike Pell's Rockollections - Remembering George and John Pt. 1

Here is the 2006 version of the annual remembrance of George and John.

As I note in the opening, this is that odd time where we are between the deaths of George Harrison, November 29, 2001 and John Lennon, December 8, 1980- two former Beatles.
If you had the unparalleled joy of growing up with the Beatles, as they grew with us, and watching them develop into the what I will always call the Greatest Group That Ever Existed, then you know the sadness and mourning the loss of those 2 lads brought us.
And still exists to this day.
Thankfully, that negative can never approach the joy and pure fun their music contributed to our lives.
They were on Mt. Olympus, and we all were all happily looking up to them, eager for their next album and lesson therein. The Beatles spoke to us individually, yet we were unified in our reverence for them. They changed the music for the better, and made us better in the process.
That is why the loss of any of the Fab Four will always be personal.
I can honestly say- no Beatles, then I don’t love music the way I do!
In my constant effort to bring a different angle to these shows, in Part One we will concentrate on George and his legal problems, using music to do so.
Beginning with, in my opinion, the unfair lawsuit brought against him for plagiarism, and continuing with all the suing going on over the Beatles breakup.
You will find that George had a biting, sarcastic wit that could be dead on- and very much in evidence in some of these songs. We will take an entirely different look at John in Part Two.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.4 CONCLUSION

GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.4 CONCLUSION

Opening this final chapter in a 3-year series based on the great and funny movie, Trains, Planes & Automobiles, about Getting Home For Thanksgiving, I owe you a T-Bird song.
I’ll pay up.
It seems to me, I didn’t try to check any stats or anything, that I would have to say there are more songs about Chevrolets than any other Automobile.
With maybe Cadillac a distant second.
So I’ll begin a set about those great Chevys with a memory rush for people of a certain generation.
Perhaps a little older than me, but I certainly have heard it before.
Notice I said memory rush and not necessarily a pop tune!
After that, maybe we should take notice of some Mercurys, and a last look at an unidentifiable car.
We will end this sizeable series with the best Automobile advice anyone can give.
And a few final thoughts and wishes from me to you, for this most right and proper American Holiday:

May your stuffing be tasty

May your turkey plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have never a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

Life is a Gift

Today before you say an unkind word- think of someone who can’t speak.
Before you complain about the taste of your food- think of someone who has nothing to eat.
Before you complain about your husband or wife- think of someone who is crying for a companion.
Today before you complain about life- think of someone who went too early.
Before you complain about your children- think of someone who desires children but they’re barren.
Before you argue about your dirty house someone didn’t clean or sweep- think of the people living in the streets.
Before whining about the distance you drive- think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.
And when you are tired and complain about your job- think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job.
And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down- put a smile on your face and be THANKFUL you’re alive and still around.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.3

GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.3

Moving on down the highway in our Automobiles, as we get closer to Thanksgiving you may find yourself in a Traffic Jam.
Lots of other cars out there, so I’ll try to musically help you avoid that Road Rage.
After that, a song written by Woody Guthrie- but I doubt this is what he had in mind, lol.
Then a song from not too long ago that has always touched me- there’s just something about her situation, and the plaintive way she sings about it.
I’ll have some more car trivia for you, I think.
And then a few things about trying to start your car in the Winter- including a devastating rocker by a guy better known for his folk and country-rock efforts. This one just flat out rocks! I love it!
Finally, I will begin a look at different MODELS of Automobiles that will carry over to the next episode.
What kind of car would God drive?
One guy’s father has the answer in song!
Next, the final chapter in what has been a 3 year series.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.2

GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.2

Motoring along with our Automobiles bringing us Home For Thanksgiving, I will open with two songs that have something in common.
Although the 2nd song has a surprise ending and kind of turns things around from the first.
Next, I will take a look at Cars being a training ground for seduction and sex- and you better believe that!
Why just the car itself can be seducing for women.
Oh, the ladies do LOVE those cars- and I will musically make my case for that.
I’ll even play a tune about a woman praying for one, lol!
We will end this chapter with an instrumental from 1961, and it comes courtesy of my old vinyl 45 RPM box.
And I hope I don’t have to explain to anyone what 45 RPM means.
It has nothing to do with an Automobile, ok?
Those pops and scratches alone make this worthy of your listening time, lol!
Nah, actually after all those years it sounds pretty damn good!
More cars are coming down the road, so please make a U-turn and come back.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.1

GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: AUTOMOBILES PT.1

Alright, after playing those Trains & Planes, based on the movie Trains, Planes & Automobiles or something like that, lol, we are caught up and ready for 2008 with Automobiles.
You might say, this year’s model!
By the way, Automobiles are the overwhelming choice for Getting Home For Thanksgiving.
Although not everyone calls them that, as the first song will attest.
A song inspired by road rage incidentally.
Then I am going to do that thing I do to get the creative juices flowing- think of the very first song I ever heard as a kid about whatever topic we are doing.
So you will get to hear that song- and it’s understandable why it would appeal to a little kid- it starts slow and gets faster and it contains a sound effect, lol!
Then a couple of songs that have the same title, but that’s all they have in common.
Then a group I HAD to play, given the topic, and a most appropriate one from them, given said topic.
I will close this opening chapter with a beautiful Love Song To A Car!
Come back for more, we are just getting started…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: PLANES PT.4 END

Planes 4

Well, here we are at the final chapter and you should be Getting Home For Thanksgiving very soon now.
Planes are our mode of travel this year, 2007.
I will open this episode up with someone else who used to say “Come fly with me”, and on a nightly basis- Alison Steele, the Nightbird on WNEW-FM! A tape of the beginning of her very first show, and a befitting song for that.
I found myself getting ticked off about what happened to the Wright Brothers.
It was a shame what happened to them, and to this day those who stole their invention have never apologized nor given them their due.
And imagine this, those amazing Brothers LEARNED how to fly while they were INVENTING flying!
Compare that to driving a car, but high in the air where any mistake could be fatal.
In honor of the Wright Brothers, Alison and Women’s Libbers everywhere, lol, I will play The True Story Of Amelia Earhart by Mathews Southern Comfort.
Then the late Long John Baldry with his interpretation of a Small Faces number.
What series could be complete without a falling in love song?
I’ll take care of that with one about a woman and a pilot, grounded during a storm.
Next, I wanna play a classic one by a classic group, which despite its reputation as a drug song is actually simply about circling and landing in London.
I was handed a just-in Thanksgiving forecast that you should find entertaining, despite my reading of it, lol!
Incidentally, the instrumental underneath me at the end is a slightly different
Flying by the Beatles (appropriate, yes?).
Thus will end 2007’s trip home.
It is never hard to find things to be thankful for, no matter how bad things may seem.
If you have two of most of the things you are supposed to have two of- eyes, ears, arms, legs, etc.- that’s reason enough for me.
If you have family, friends, pets or just one person who loves you, you are blessed with a bounty.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
And I am thankful to you for taking this trip and all the others with me- it wouldn’t be the same without you.

But wait, there is one more way to get home in that movie title…coming right up!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: PLANES PT.3

Part 3 Planes

I think I figured out why I used so many vinyl records in this series.
The holidays seem to subconsciously bring back memories of happy times past, so I think I just decided to do “Throwback Shows”- back to a time before CD’s, internet downloads, etc.
Good old 33 1/3’s & 45’s!
Gonna open this one up with a classic that does not have Planes or Flying in the title, but just listen to the first words out of Joe’s mouth.
Then back to our story of the Wright Brothers, who when we last left off had experimented with gliders, but now KNEW they were ready to use an engine.
Moving on to 3 folk/rock songs about Planes- including one of my favorite songs of all time, another that is the studio version as opposed to the live one from Woodstock you usually hear (is Arlo REALLY singing about bringing in a couple of kilos?), and the last from the most underrated and underappreciated songwriter in all of Rock & Roll, John Sebastian.
I will wind down the dark, unhappy ending to the Wright Brothers story.
They initially received wide acclaim, but soon the powers that be were downplaying the Brothers incredible success story- stealing their ideas and invention. And they began their smear campaign.
First the French and Germans, then all of Europe, and even our very own Smithsonian after humiliating failure at flying, just copied what the Wrights did.
Thus began a long series of court battles, and serves as a cautionary tale!
Years later, the Smithsonian finally admitted they had cheated after damaging the Wright Brothers reputation.
I will close this episode out with a song by an old obscure group called Affinity.
Of course, it is from a vinyl record!
I ask you to enjoy this episode, but no one ever listens to me, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: PLANES PT.2

Thanksgiving Part 2

We continue now with our journey home for Thanksgiving, this year by Plane.
So, all songs will be about Planes or Flying- and for some strange reason I used a LOT of vinyl records for these shows, as all audiophiles will undoubtedly pick up on.
I owed you some ID’s from the previous chapter, and that will be taken care of.
The first song played is an amazing one. It was written on a dare in 15 minutes by someone you will be familiar with, before a trip to the airport.
I will have a bit more about the Wright Brothers, but not much this time.
Then it is time we get our own butts out to the airport, as we have flights waiting.
Two songs about that.
First, one I am sure you have not heard in a LONG time!
A one-hit wonder group from California that made it to #17 on the charts in the Flower Power period of 1967.
An unforgettable song, though I am sure it has been forgotten, about going from the U.S. to England in search of a hit single, and realizing that the trip and the effort is not worth breaking your loved one’s heart.
The next I HAD to play, and is maybe the FINEST song ever about leaving on a plane.
Some people may be surprised to learn it was written by John Denver!
Next, we will fly Trans Love Airways with Donovan- very 60’s sounding (and listen for his sly reference to flying Jefferson Airplane!).
Closing this episode out, I have a very funny set beginning with the brilliant Christine Lavin.
Then we will tackle the subject of Airport Security with a surprise guest, followed by Tom Paxton singing about the airlines’ uncanny ability to drive musicians crazy by breaking their guitars en route.
Closing this one out is a very short number, only seconds long, by Bob Dylan.
I don’t know what the hell he is singing about, but it is called Jet Pilot, lol!
All in all, this one is a fun time, as we reach the midpoint of our trek home for Thanksgiving.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: PLANES PT.1

 2007 Planes

This is from last year, and thankfully I am not at home, but at the studio!
If you come up with an acceptable premise one year, and you can use it again, why not?
We will continue to travel home by those different modes of transportation mentioned in the great Steve Martin/John Candy movie, Trains, Planes & Automobile- one of the few movies about Thanksgiving.
And as always, Thanksgiving is the most heavily traveled time of year here in the United States.
Last year was Trains, so logically this year we take Planes.
I will open with a couple of songs I might not ordinarily play- but then, I bring no rules here.
Rockollections is what it is!
The songs this year will be intermingled with the fascinating story of the Wright Brothers, an inspiring one to all would-be inventors out there.
They were not exactly welcomed by scientists, engineers, etc., who could not understand how two ordinary guys could do what they could not do!
Please join me as we take off with an eclectic mix of fellow passengers, including Nick Gilder, the Climax Blues Band and the Flamin’ Groovies.
Oh, the Rolling Stones are with us- but they’ll be in First Class naturally, lol.
Let’s start Getting Home For Thanksgiving!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: TRAINS PT.3 END

GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: TRAINS PT.3 END

Welcome to the final lap of our journey Home For Thanksgiving, this year by Train. I am going to open this episode with two groups with not much in common, other than Rock & Roll. Wonder if they have ever been played back-to-back, LOL? And is that a snort at the beginning of the first song?
Then it is on to a set that lists some songs wherein the Trains have ACTUAL NAMES. After that, some Wishful & Metaphorical Trains.  And finally- for me- the perfect song to wrap up our travel together, as we reach the End Of The Line.
I hope you have enjoyed this effort, based on that great, funny Thanksgiving movie “Trains, Planes & Automobiles- and I know I left out plenty of Train songs.
You can’t play ‘em ALL! If you want to scold me, just leave a comment.
Join me next as we go home by Plane.
There is always much to be thankful for. Just get up and take a look around, and you will find things. In fact, the act of getting up and being able to look around is a gift.
Take nothing for granted.
And so, I thank you for listening. Most of all, I wish you a Very Healthy & Happy Thanksgiving!
But wait, there is much more Thanksgiving travel coming very soon.

GETTING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING: TRAINS PT.2
We continue on our journey home for Thanksgiving by Train- inspired by the movie Trains, Planes & Automobile. And I now realize I have the title wrong, lol!
And this time we will take a look a DIFFERENT KINDS of Trains, so get ready for the familiar, the forgotten and the maybe never heard. Including the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, etc.
It should be pointed out that every genre of music has Train songs- Rock, Country, Blues, Pop, R&B, Soul and as many else as we can get to.
I am going to end this episode with some Folk Train Songs.
Beginning with one from a live concert from Simon & Garfunkel that dates back to January 22, 1967, and with unbelievably good quality considering. A NYC subway song.
A folkie staple from Peter, Paul & Mary follows, and we’ll go out with a fun song called To Morro which I am sure you will like.
We are about 2/3 of the way there, so don’t forget to join me for those final miles home in the concluding chapter.
Coming soon to a computer near you!

Inspired by one of the few, and very funny, movies about Thanksgiving, “Trains, Planes & Automobiles”, I decided that we will take them in order.
Therefore this year it will be Trains as the selected mode of transportation to take us home to our friends and relatives- to gab, drink, eat and especially give thanks for the bountiful gifts we are blessed with in this great country.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BOOKER T AND THE MG’S PT.2 END

Booker T and the MG's Pt. 2

Continuing with Booker T & The MG’s, they had a number of hits in the 60’s.
Bassist Steinberg was replaced by Donald “Duck” Dunn in 1965.
The group had its first hit with Booker T playing his signature Hammond B-3 organ in 1967, and it was used in the movie, Barfly.
Now I saw that movie, but it was back when I was drinking myself.
To me, there was no story, it was like going down to my local bar, lol!
They could have just filmed it there!
The band had a successful tour in Europe, known as Hit The Road, Stax.
They played at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and were invited to Woodstock, but didn’t play because Al Jackson was afraid to ride in the helicopter that would bring them in!
Got another # 17 hit in 1968.
And Booker T & MG’s and the Beatles were a mutual admiration society.
I will play the results of that.
They were the house band at Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary, and also for Bob Dylan’s 30th in 1992.
Neil Young asked the group to back him on tour, and they played behind him on his album Are You Passionate?
Have you ever heard Booker T Jones SING?
Well, you will if you give this episode a listen.
I’ll close it all out with their 2nd-biggest hit, a song about something I am reminded of every week.
Hope you enjoy this one, as usual I did doing it!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BOOKER T AND THE MG’S PT.1

 Booker T and the MG's Pt. 1

This is the first time I have ever featured an instrumental band on the show- and I couldn’t have picked a better group than Booker T & The MG’s.
A popular soul band in the 60’s & 70’s, they were also the Memphis house band at the great Stax/Volt studios.
We will get into the history of the band.
Wait until you get a load of who and what they played behind!
You may not know however that Booker T was often at school, and his place in the band for session work was taken by Isaac Hayes.
Sometimes they even played together- one on organ, one on piano.
I’ll try to clear up some dispute over the group’s name.
You’ll hear some hits in this episode that have been unplayed for a long time, plus their most famous song.
Which in 1962 was released as the B-side of a single, the A-side called Behave Yourself.
That didn’t make it, but the famous flip side did, hitting # 3 on the Pop Charts.
I’ll play both, so you can hear that rarely played originally chosen A-side!
The oddest thing in this chapter is Engineer Ken nagging me to play a song I didn’t think was good enough.
It was Lonely Avenue, their interpretation of the old Ray Charles song.
He kept pushing, I said go ahead then, and he proclaimed it the best song we heard so far, lol!
See what you think.
Another half of Booker et al, coming soon.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE GHOST OF NEW YORK RADIO PAST

THE GHOST OF NEW YORK RADIO PAST

THE GHOST OF NEW YORK RADIO PAST

One last piece of unfinished business in our Salute To Radio. Here is a classic Radio Montage I wish I could say I put together, called The Ghost Of New York Radio Past.

In fact, it was done by WFUV’s Pete Fornatale with help from Don Feergard and Peter Mocover.(That’s Fornatale at the end, when he was a student at Fordham University’s radio station.)

And what a job they did!

It is without a doubt a grand, nostalgic trip down Memory Lane for listeners of New York City radio, but is a priceless piece of history no matter where you are from.

WOR-FM, WNEW-FM, the AM stations, the FM stations, Alan Freed, Murray the K, Cousin Brucie, Scott Muni, Mad Daddy, B. Mitchell Reed, Bobaloo, and just about anybody else you can think of will be represented here.

But of course, you will not hear ME, lol!

No where, no way!

This brilliant time capsule is now at the Museum Of Television & Radio.
