Longtown Sound 466 Interview with G Tom Mac Pt. 1

Longtown Sound 466

Longtown Sound 466 Interview with Gerard McMahon aka - G Tom Mac and ear - picked selected cuts from the brilliant CD, “Thou Shall Not Fall”  including “Cry Little Sister”, “Secrets of Oz”,  “Under Your Skin” and “All The Rage”.

Many thanks to “G”  for taking the time to talk and for his keen insights into the craft of songwriting, his thoughts on record labels and much more! This is one of the good guys, folks.

Gerard McMahon (aka Gerard McMann and G Tom Mac) (born Gerard Thomas MacMahon, of Irish/English parentage, in Birmingham, U.K) is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer who specializes in creating music for films and TV. McMahon is also the founder member of the band G TOM MAC.

While McMahon has undertaken many different musical projects throughout his career, he is probably still best known by many for the gothic rock anthem “Cry Little Sister“, a song which he recorded in 1987 for the soundtrack album of the cult comedy-horror film The Lost Boys.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: SCARY RADIO AND FINALE

 Scary Radio and Finale

CHAPTER TEN: SCARY RADIO AND FINALE

Well, this is it.
The grand finale to our Salute To Radio, and how appropriate it came in 10 parts for a 10th Anniversary.
Since today is Halloween, I will begin with some Scary Radio (you are correct if you thought I was saving it, lol!).
Then the other half of Cashman & West, as I said I would play them together and singly.
We already have heard them as a duo, and Terry Cashman, so I will play a song by Tommy West that has been an old friend of mine for many years, though you probably have never heard it.
It is called Old Radio, and those lyrics never fail to get me.
If you love the Radio, you will delight in this song and know exactly what he is talking about.
And it contains one of the funniest lines in Rock & Roll, “I was just a fool in love when I found out Frankie Lymon wasn’t a girl!”
At the end of the song, he hears himself being played on the radio, so that will be the next direction I go in.
How that must feel, for a struggling artist or band to finally get played on the radio- subject nowadays to the odorous, obscene power of Program Directors, (a special place in hell for them!).
We begin the end with a fellow you should have at least heard of, Don Williams.
After our Sex And The Radio episode, this is a song about pure, sweet love- and how the songs on the radio say what he wants to say so much better than he ever could.
I ask you to listen to the words of Listen To The Radio.
As some of you may know, I place a great emphasis on beginning and ending songs during these shows.
I could not think of a finer song than the one I have chosen to go out with.
It says exactly what I want to say to all whose lives have touched mine as a result of both the radio show and the podcasts. And I hope I have been able to touch yours in some small way in return.
I never identified that last song, so it will be in the Comments, lol!
I think I have kept all my promises during this Radio series.
And it seems to me I owe an announcement I promised at the beginning, something about chucking it all in and riding off into the sunset.
The announcement will be made here (Pell’s poker face!).
Finally, thanks again to anyone who has EVER listened to the show.
To those curious souls who gave me a chance and never came back for more, and naturally, most especially for those who like what I do, and do come back for more.
My goal was always to appeal to the intelligent, serious listener, and bring fun to my presentation.
While I am very proud of many of the things I have done here, the final decision is yours as to whether I succeed in that goal.
I have enjoyed doing these shows my way- blessed with so much freedom- more than just about anything else I have ever done.
Thank you…so much!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: RADIO IN FILM AND TELEVISION

 Radio in Film and TV

CHAPTER NINE: RADIO IN FILM AND TELEVISION

This really was done live yesterday, and I truly was drenched- so wet, I am afraid to look and see if the signatures in my wallet are all blurred, lol!
Starting the wrap-up of our Salute To Radio, I thought I would open with a song that mentions many of the people we have heard on the radio over the years- some serious namedropping here.
Then a look, not as long as I would have liked, at how Radio has been portrayed in other media.
In this case, Film and TV.
All leading us to the life of a DJ, and the best song ever about that.
One that had to be played, and I have no doubt some people were waiting for it, wondering why I hadn’t yet played it.
Last week, I talked about those times when the Radio plays one of those “Our Songs” out of nowhere to an unsuspecting listener.
You know, the ‘Our Song” that couples have!
Another look at that occurrence.
Only one more episode to go in our massive theme.
And I will be sad to see it end, I had so many songs left over!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BROKEN AND BREAKING RADIOS

Broken and Breaking Radios

CHAPTER EIGHT: BROKEN AND BREAKING RADIOS

Continuing the Salute to Radio and my 10 Years as the host of Rock Lives, Rockollections or anything else you want to call it…as long as it’s nice, lol!
I am going to pick up exactly where we left off, and even on my feel-good show, not all love stories have happy endings. Under our BIG umbrella of what I consider Rock & Roll, the great George Jones will sing.
Followed by a short set regarding Broken Radios.
Then going in the other direction, how Radio can do the Breaking- unknowingly breaking your heart!
How many times have you had the radio on at home or in the car, a song comes on and you are transported back to a sense of sadness or loneliness over the loss of an ex-love?
Just another example of Radio being a part of, and affecting, our lives.
I’ll play a beautiful song by Merrie Amsterburg, and a rocker by Roy Orbison to illuminate that circumstance.
Got a song that Engineer Ken turned me on to, and a Beatles’ theme they did for their own BBC show.
Finally, I am very much aware of the special relationship- the attachment- that forms between the listener and the guy on the radio. I have had a part in both sides of that.
So, I will close this episode with a tradition born on Dec. 18, 1967- the day Scott Muni started at WNEW-FM, and stayed for 31 years!
For his first 3 to 6 years- I wish I could recall precisely- he would end his show with this song, 7 days a week, and making it easy for me to tell when it was a few minutes till 7PM.
After that, during his remaining years there, he would always use the song to end his anniversary shows, and always leave me with a huge lump in my throat.
For a man who provided such a musical style and education for me, I could do much worse than to close my own 10th Anniversary with it in honor of him.
I am sure there will be 2 more parts to this Salute To Radio, so I will have more gratitude to express.
But for now, to anyone who has EVER listened to my little radio show/podcast, a great big thank you!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: SEX AND THE RADIO

Sex and The Radio

CHAPTER SEVEN: SEX AND THE RADIO

I am back in Brooklyn and it looks like I may just make it under the wire New York time.
It was on this day ten years ago, October 21, 1998, that I did the first Rock & Roll show at a station that never played that music.
Back then it was quite a bit different- more emphasis on talk rather than music.
I would read the Billboard album reviews and tell what were the top 10 or 20 songs on the charts.
But one of the most fun things was Engineer Ken and I each time wondering what we could get away with.
Could I play 2 songs in a row without coming on in between, could I play an 8-minute song and get away with it, could I do a whole hour dedicated to one theme holding the songs together?
All these things developed slowly, as each week I would try something different until the show evolved into what it is now- and I am pretty happy with it.
This is almost ideally what I always had in mind- the only thing preventing complete satisfaction are those damnable time constraints.
If instead of an hour, I need an hour and 13 minutes or 2 hours, well that would be just fine, lol!
The show should be over when I am done, and that changes from week to week!
But I can’t really complain, as I have far more freedom than the folks at those big corporation commercial stations.
My 10th anniversary was the impetus for this whole Salute To Radio- as I wanted to do something special, but not put the emphasis on me.
And there are no guaranties I will be there 10 years from now.
I will explain the odd fact that although I am on only one day a week, it falls 10 years to the day.
This will be a fun episode, beginning with a fun couple of songs for you and I.
Then a set I am calling Sex And The Radio.
That should arouse your interest- or arouse something!
There wasn’t enough time for the last song, which although a drastically different situation, I felt sort of fits in there. So listen to me stretch to the break with my wonderful gift of gab, lol!
And we will get to that very interesting storysong first thing in the next chapter.
Hope to see you then!

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE FALL OF FM RADIO

The Fall Of Radio

CHAPTER SIX: THE FALL OF FM RADIO

Anyone who has ever listened to my show or podcast knows that I do not have any rules about what I am going to play.
Most times doing a theme, the opening or the last song comes to me, sometimes both.
After that, I think of every song I can on the topic.
Then the most important part- I play them!
And while one is playing, the song that should come next becomes apparent to me.
No other song will do.
I have spent days looking for that next song- it HAS to be that one!
Most times I find it, sometimes I have to give up and think of what might be the 2nd best song to play next.
Sort of like an artist searching for a particular color, but I am not so egotistical as to regard that as a real comparison.
Then I go to the station, and sometimes because of time, I have to cut that song from the set, lol!
But for me, that is how I play the music.
No playlist, nobody tells me what I can or can’t play.
I am very aware of how lucky I am.
However, there was a brief time when that was the accepted way of doing radio.
For example, we had two commercial free-form stations here in New York- WABC-FM/WPLJ and WNEW-FM.
At ABC/PLJ that free-form format lasted less than 3 years, 1968-71.
Scott Muni, bless him, fought the good fight at WNEW-FM from 1967, as Program Director and just because he was the way he was, for himself and all the other DJ’s, until 1981!!!
If you detect some lingering animosity and bitterness on my part, you are correct.
Now, I will go after those sleazy beancounters who changed all that.
First up, a song about a guy after my own heart, who will hang up on you if you question why after Madonna he played George Jones.
Because he WANTED to!
And notice the statio he was at is WANT…as in what the people WANT?
Then the highlight, the centerpiece of not only this chapter but the whole series.
An epic poem by the singer/songwriter Mike Agranoff- Ballad Of The Sandman.
If you have never heard it, you are in for a treat and will never forget it.
If you have heard it, it is like a fine brandy, taken out on special occassions and savored.
In any case, it captures what 1960’s radio was like better than I ever could.
It is just a BRILLIANT piece of work, and I always get a huge reaction when I play it.
I will close this episode out with a song concerning something we all have experienced; losing our favorite DJ!
They hardly ever say anything and we are reduced to searching for him or her Around The Dial.
Now in this case I will admit to some ego in the lyrics, “you never gave in to fashion, you never followed any trend”.
Yeah, that’s me- just trying to play what I think is the best music!
There’s Magic in the Radio, Enchantment in the Ether!
Come join me for a look at how good the Radio COULD be, if it would DARE!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE RISE OF FM RADIO

 THE RISE OF FM RADIO

CHAPTER FIVE: THE RISE OF FM RADIO

It is warmer than I expected, but the Fall foliage is doing it’s beautiful thing- it is becoming a tossup whether Autumn or Winter is my favorite season.
And it is always weird to put up a Podcast while on vacation. I am slow with a laptop, but here goes.
Time to continue our Salute To Radio, for my 10th anniversary doing the Rock show.
Back in late August/September, I made some promises here- I say them again.
You will hear the BEST damn songs about Radio you will ever hear!
As a kid I liked the radio, but when I heard FM I fell in love!
These next two chapters will be about the grand, and for the most part failed, experiment of FM Progressive Rock Radio.
I have a crazed but very true story about listening to an AM/FM clock radio as a kid- just one of many, as I was fascinated and spent every spare moment listening to this new music and the men and women who were playing it.
If you lived through it, you’ll know what I mean.
But if you didn’t, I cannot emphasize enough the bond between the then small audience, and the more-than-just-DJ, on the free-form stations.
They each had their own personality, yes they actually HAD personalities!
As well as their own peculiar taste in music- and free range to play what they wanted.
They became a friend.
What a wonderful musical education I got from them, beyond rock & roll and into classical, jazz, blues, you name it!
An impression so indelibly made, it is without a doubt the reason I play music the way I do right to this day.
So join me for a time before the suits and the greedheads stepped in and ruined it all…!
