ROCKOLLECTIONS: BTO A-OK PT.2 END

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BTO A-OK! PT.2

To bring us back from the break, I couldn’t resist saying what I did.
Seems I never resist saying things, lol!
I had a song I wanted to play by BTO because I liked the band’s playing on it- once again, the band’s jazzy overtones or undertones or some kind of tones.
Not so much the lyrics though, they seemed rather…well I’ll let you hear me have some fun getting on myself for putting on an air.
It is my considered opinion, I do not look good in airs- immediately took the damn thing off, lol!
Anyway, the song may be like nothing you have ever heard from Bachman Turner Overdrive.
Then a huge hit written by Randy Bachman 8 years before, when he was a member of the Guess Who.
Although with different lyrics based on a DJ’s expression.
Then of course, there was the usual matter of band decomposition- as the 2 other brothers asked the third, Robbie, to leave.
That’s gotta hurt!
BTO always liked the old Rock & Roll- Elvis and the Stones, and came along at just the right time.
They brought guitar-rock back, and called it Workingman’s Rock & Roll!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BTO A-OK! PT.1

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BTO A-OK! PT.1
BTO- Bachman Turner Overdrive.
That’s the featured group this outing.
They were from Winnipeg, Canada, a place that once had an NHL hockey team, loves the game as I do, is famous for it’s cold winters and I would no doubt love living there.
No problem finding a place to skate there!
I’ll have the band’s bio.
I will be playing their hits, and of course their just plain good songs too- one of which has Little Richard on piano.
It seems to me they had 2 separate sounds- one a hard-rocking one, the other with definite jazz stylings.
I will explore and give a healthy dose of both in this two-parter.
And wait until you hear the unbelievable story of how the band was signed, after being rejected 26 times.
Truly amazing, and I will be playing the song that did it from the 7 1/2 inch demo tape.
Some good vibes and memories in this one, with more to come.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: AN END OF SUMMER CRUISE PT.2 CONCLUSION

AN END OF SUMMER CRUISE PT.2

Alright- cruises, boats, etc.- you need Sailors.
That is where I am going in this end chapter.
And when I say sailor, who is the first one you think of?
I have a real good set about Sailors, and since we had the wind, I lengthened it even more.
Then a change of pace to an entirely different kind of seagoing vessel, with a button-down mind and the world’s greatest group!
This one has the usual surprises I hope you have come to expect. (Stick around for the ending!).
There was a time in the beginning of my 10 years when I had to fight to get things played- especially when I had a partner on the show (I could NEVER go back to that!).
And even more especially when I wandered far from Rock & Roll. As I have mentioned, this was a station that never even played THAT!
There was this fear about what the higher-ups would think- even Engineer Ken many times wondered where I was going.
“You want to play WHAT?”
I would argue and tell them I will not embarass you, this will work!
Most times they yielded and I got the recordings on the show.
But in the last 4 or 5 years, they have totally left me alone.
This show is now very much what I had always envisioned it to be.
And of course, there is that wonderful vindication of winning the Best Entertainment Show Of 2007.
However a few weeks ago, the General Manager of our station, and a great supporter of what I do and how I do it, was fired.
Even Engineer Ken is walking a tightrope.
We shall see what we shall see!
In the meantime, let’s enjoy the salty air against our faces and sail on…
One more thing, don’t awake with a tummyache!
Mean anything to you?

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: AN END OF SUMMER CRUISE PT.1

AN END OF SUMMER CRUISE PT.1

I thought I would try something diferent here, for this last official week of the season- an End Of Summer Cruise, using music as our proxy means of travel.
Whether the Cruise is on a lake, a river or the ocean- I got you covered.
Although if it is on an ocean, we might be lucky enough for some whale-watching!
Further, if you are tight for money and can’t afford a cruise, or if you don’t have a boat of your own, well, we can BUILD our own!
Which is just what we will do, again using songs as our tools.
Plus I will put a mythologically named group on the water, although their name is not my idea of a good time.
That river runs through hell!
This episode ends with a song that, if you listen to those illegal smile lyrics, I must remind you is ONLY a fantasy, lol!
There will be more to come, we will keep on cruisin’!
Oh yeah!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: A 10TH ANNIVERSARY AND SALUTE TO RADIO PT.4 (CONTINUED IN OCTOBER)

A 10TH ANNIVERSARY AND SALUTE TO RADIO PT.4

CHAPTER FOUR: RADIO- STRETCHING YOUR IMAGINATION

Includes Stan Freberg, With The Most Brilliant Evocation Anyone Has Ever Attempted, Of The Possibilities Of What Radio & Imagination Can Do!
Intermingled With Songs I Selected To Confirm Some Of What We Can “WATCH” On The Radio.

We Will Pick Up This Series Where We Left Off In October, For The 10th Anniversary Of My Beginning The Rock Show- At A Station Where No One Had Ever Played That Kind Of Music Before!

This has been 10 years in the making.
A Salute To Radio, marking my 10th Anniversary, August 25, 2008 at the same radio station!
Let me begin by saying that for those who have listened to me before, this Theme series may be the BEST thing I have ever done.
For those who have never listened to my show before, this would be a perfect time to sample what I do.
My motto for presenting our music has been “Get on the bus with me, and I will take you somewhere- making various stops along the way.”
And so it will be with this series.
While I usually write some things in this little blurb about what you will hear, I don’t feel like doing that for these chapters- they are that unrivaled to me.
You will just have to listen to find out.
As I say a few minutes into Chapter One, you will hear things that you have never heard before.
You will hear things that haven’t been played on the radio in over 25 years- hell, over 35!
You will hear things that will delight you, surprise you, sadden you, anger you, and much much more.
In fact, putting it together, it occured to me that this series might be the one to end it all with.
One last try at doing radio the way it SHOULD be done, before riding off into the sunset…but more on that in October.
These episodes are going to be special.
These episodes are going to be personal.
These episodes are going to be emotional.
This is MY LIFE!
And maybe a little piece of yours as well.

Longtown as well as the US East Coast is  all abuzz with folks heading to the Atlantic coast to retrieve relatives, friends and check property, beachcombers heading inland for safer climes. Hanna, Ike and Josephine will be joining us in the days to come so sit back, enjoy the tunage and share with your new house guests.
Scrabble, Monopoly and Checkers are handy games to have on hand when played by candlelight. Anyway, be safe and dig the fresh indie tunage and a few old favorites from Uncleshag to all the Longtown Listeners on WLSO.FM!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRUE OLDIES PT.4 FINISH

TRUE OLDIES PT.4 FINISH

I will open this final episode in the Oldies series with my personal favorite Richie Valens song- you may or may not have heard it before, but it rocks.
For all its fearfulness to adults, early R&R did have some non-threatening figures.
I mean, how scary could Fats Domino be? He has always been just a nice man.
I have an author friend of mine, Lou Miano, who is writing a book on Louis Prima.
He is of the opinion, and there are many others who agree with him, that Prima belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame under the Influences category.
He was apparently a wild man for his time, so a good case can be made.
I’ll play the original version of a song by him, one that was done recently on a Brian Setzer Orchestra album.
Also included in this chapter is a tune by one of the few female rockabilly artists (it was annoyingly almost strictly a boy’s club!), that has Elvis Presley song titles making up most of the lyrics.
We will go out with a set that includes an old radio commercial, dedicated to a couple of places a kid growing up in New York City could go to in the Summertime.
And one of the FEW places you could see R&R artists perform, frequently hosted by the same Cousin Bruce Morrow who took my place on the radio just for today!
I do hope you enjoyed the music and this series.
There is just something about the Summer that lends itself to those moldy oldies perfectly.
Next up, my 10 year anniversary at the station, prompting a Salute To Radio!

New Music Tuesday and it’s all good! Here on the lake among the sunbeams and the cloudless sky one can see forever and if one takes a very long careful look, maybe even a little “around the bend”. It’s all light and refractions of light. Does it ever tell a story? And how! Enjoy the tunage, pass it on, comment to the artists and let Uncleshag know in the comments if he’s missing anything! That will take volumes!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRUE OLDIES PT.3

True Oldies Pt. 3

Alright, now we get to some real kickass Rock & Roll!
Wailing saxes, guitars, drums, shouting vocals- OUR ROOTS!
With Cousin Brucie Morrow breathing down my neck, I felt it was only right.
He has the nerve to take my place on September 2nd, lol?
Only for one show though.
You know, most so-called Oldies stations only go back to 1964-65, as if nothing had happened before that.
That’s nonsense! There were a good 10 years of primitive, high energy R&R that in its exuberant abandon alone is worth a listen.
Before I begin with the music, I have something I want to read to you, to give you a feel for the anti-rock attitude of those early days.
Then listen to some GENIUS go off on a tirade.
Wonder what the hell ever happened to him?
We KNOW what happened with our music.
And drawing a parallel with the 60’s hippie protest generation, those 50’s kids also used hair and clothes to make their statement!
So, I will play a 1950’s Fashion Statement set- and it rocks!
This is a good chapter, and I was enjoying myself more and more.
Hope you will too.

Mike
