ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRUE OLDIES PT.2

True Oldies Pt. 2

Moving along with our True Oldies, I am gonna open up this chapter with another interpretation of that old chestnut, Summertime- this one from 1960, by the group that did the original Barbara Ann- long before the Beach Boys.
Then a not so well known Summer song by a cat named Elvis Presley.
I hear he did some things before 1964, although you’d never know it by today’s Oldies radio.
Got a song from Frankie Lymon’s brother that only serves to remind me…oh, never mind, lol!
Then a set of songs that were known as “grind” songs- very little movement of the feet, but the rest of the body was definitely in action.
We also called them “songs that kept the cleaners in business”, if you know what I mean!
All the groups’ names begin with a C oddly enough, and I threw in a rocker just for the hell of it.
These shows all prompted By Bruce Morrow taking my place on Sept.2 with our station’s Les Marshak.
Takes 2 guys to replace me- even just for a week!
I ended with a song I said needed no introduction, didn’t give it one, and never identified it or the next one.
For the interested or curious, they were the Del Vikings and the Edsels (bad name for a bad car!).
We will continue with more.

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRUE OLDIES PT.1

 True Oldies Pt. 1

Been busy working on another project, so these next pods are a bit late. Engineer Ken and I both thought of playing some oldies, separately.
Me, because Summertime seems to be the best time to listen to them. Ken because it would be a good lead-in for Cousin Bruce Morrow, the legendary DJ who started in 1959, will be in my radio spot on September 2nd. Just the one time, joined by another old time DJ Les Marshak.
And Brucie will be plugging his new book, Doo Wop: The Music, The Times, The Era.
My opening set will be oldies dealing with Summer- including one that mentions miniature golf.
While away on vacation last year, and on what was undoubtedly the hottest day of the year for me, sweat pouring off me, I kicked some girl’s butt in miniature golf.
Just felt I had to mention that, lol!
Enjoy the music, and in most cases these were ALREADY oldies when I first heard them.
But these were the true pioneers, the rebels- and their legacy is our roots.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.4 CONCLUSION

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.4

The final chapter of the Wilburys that Travel.
Heading right to the music, I’ll open open with Inside Out- the state of the world today, or maybe just the state of my life, lol!
Getting back to that question of why Vol.3 followed Vol.1, the official word was that Vol.3 was recorded by a different group of brothers.
All the remaining members, Dylan, Lynne, Harrison, Petty, took DIFFERENT Wilbury names.
In other words, a Vol.2 could NEVER be done, out of respect for the death of Roy Orbison.
Moving on with the music, got one for my inevitable trip to the Poor House.
The Traveling Wilbury’s CD’s were out of print for many years, mainly because George Harrison owned the rights, and died before he could renew them.
I have an outtake by George. A terrific song called Maxine.
I’ll be quoting from a very perceptive article by a guy named Phil Reed.
Then a song that may have slipped through the cracks, the Travelers contributed the title song on the children’s album, the Romanian Angel Appeal Benefit Album.
Engineer Ken accidentally played Roy Orbison’s last posthumous hit instead.
But we got it all straightened out.
I’ll take it all home with another outtake that is so good I can’t believe it wasn’t released- appropriately called I’m Gone (and I am in more ways than one, lol!)
Just a great rocker!
I owe a great debt of thanks to my pal Mike Hennessy for his contributions to this series.
So I do so publicly- Thanks Mickster!
This last episode is a good one. Hope you like it.

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.3

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.3

Sorry for the delay, I had computer problems- this baby has been ready to go for days.
And it is a STRONG episode!
I’ll start with the Wilburys trading vocals on the opening track to their Vol.3.
What happened to Vol.2?
Well, there are 3 theories.
One, it is more of that quirky Wilbury humor.
Two, Vol.2 is now considered to be Tom Petty’s album Full Moon Fever- produced by Jeff Lynne and featuring Lynne, Harrison and Orbison (only one missing was Dylan).
Three, it had to do with the loss of Roy Orbison, and I will have more about that next chapter.
At any rate, I thought I’d play a cut from the Petty LP, dedicated to the approaching anniversary of 9/11.
When I was preparing these shows, I remember hearing a Wilbury song and thinking it could have been done by the Beatles, or Buddy Holly, or the Diamonds or a group like that from the 50’s.
I will play that one, and follow it with a doowop style song from Bob Dylan called 7 Deadly Sins- that’s right, count ‘em- 7.
Though it is a wonderful album, Orbison was sorely missed on Vol.3.
And during the period between the 2 albums, they could have called themselves the Traveling Circus.
They singly or in groups appeared on other people’s records.
I have a great example with George Harrison playing slide guitar on the album Duane Eddy, His Twangy Guitar & The Rebels.
It is an instrumental called The Trembler, and comes with a VERY interesting story about how George brought it to the session, having to do with Ravi Shankar.
After that, an outtake of a song you should know, by the boys and Del Shannon, rumored to take Roy Orbison’s place in the group.
Strangely, he instead took his own life.
We will go out on a happier note, with a great instrumental (?) version of New Blue Moon, that was a B-side to Wilbury singles TWICE!
As I said, a STRONG episode, and an equally good one coming next to close the series out.
Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.2

WILBURY THEM PT.2

As I move on with the Traveling Wilburys, you are forewarned to get pen and paper ready, as I will be running down the “brothers” roster later in this episode.
Gonna start off with one that has Roy Orbison doing the lead vocal, and stacks right up there with all the great music he has done before.
Roy hadn’t had a real hit in decades, and joining the Wilburys helped him launch a career revival.
Unfortunately for him, he died only mere months after the recording of the Wilburys album, and his own solo one containing his last legitimate hit!
If you have seen the video for End Of The Line, you know the elegantly understated tribute to Orbison in it.
Outtakes have popped up over the years, so I will play a couple of his classic hits re-recorded with the Traveling guys.
Although the band was known for trading vocals, we’ll hear a song with clear spiritual overtones from the very spiritual George Harrison.
And a feisty Bob Dylan, taking on Bruce Springsteen with Tweeter & The Monkey Man.
Mansion On The Hill, anyone? Or Jersey Girl? Maybe Thunder Road?
And don’t forget, I’ll have the actual breakdown of comical names these Rock & Roll giants chose for that debut album.
We’ll end this one with my, and I am sure many other people’s, favorite Traveling Wilburys song.
To be continued…

Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: WILBURY THEM PT.1

Wilbury Them Pt. 1

I am going to start this whole thing out rockin’- and rightly so.
All things considered, the Traveling Wilburys were probably the greatest supergroup ever!
Certainly the greatest unoffical supergroup- they didn’t even use their real names.
But we know who they are.
The group came into existence because George Harrison needed a B-side for a single.
And what a freaky way it all fell into place, which I will most assuredly be talking about.
They did that B-side (ultimately replaced by another song), but the result was way too good to toss away as filler.
And they had so much fun recording that one song, they decided to record a full album together using pseudonyms as half-brothers, instead of their real names.
Those real names were, and get this, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne of ELO, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.
What a lineup- it’s Murderer’s Row!
As I said, I will open up rocking and go from there.
Included in this chapter, is a cutely sexy song by Dylan using car jargon- Bob has never been so lecherous and funny at the same time.
And if you listen closely near the end, he sings what was ALMOST the band’s name.
Of course, I will be telling you how they happened to pick their name, Traveling Wilburys.
And how it relates to what I have named this Series.
If you are a rocker, these Pods will be fun.

Mike

Monday, Monday! A rare night time posting for the Longtown Sound as Uncleshag had important duties boosting the home land security against the raging species of fish known universally as  “The Bass”. I must say, I kicked some bass during the stalking and procurement action. By the by, “action packed” describes the tunage in today’s LTS!
    Enjoy the new tunage!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE FIRST ANNUAL SUMMER LOLLAPALOOZA PT.4 END

THE FIRST ANNUAL SUMMER LOLLAPALOOZA PT.4 END

Before we begin, two things- first a sort of bonus track to open from Gordon Lightfoot, and here are a few signs it might be way too hot:

The pizza you ordered is actually the same temperature
that it came out of the oven when the delivery guy FINALLY
    gets it to your door.
The water in your swimming pool can be used to cook
    vegetables.
Cows give homogenized milk right there at the Dairy.
    Chickens lay hard boiled eggs.
You can cook a full meal in your crock pot without ever
    plugging it in.
The frozen pork loin you bought at the grocery on special
is fully cooked by the time you get home and you only live a
two minute drive from the store.
The squash in your garden are fully cooked when you pick
    them.
“Ice Cube” forced to change his name to “Wet Spot.”
Too late, you realize that killing someone for a Slurpee
    is probably a crime.
Al Gore takes credit for inventing air conditioning.
You shaved ten minutes off the morning commute by cooking
breakfast on your dashboard on the way in.
Your kids are toasting marshmallows — by sticking them
    out the window.
Water comes out of the “cold” faucet at the same tempera-
    ture as the “hot” faucet.

Wrapping things up all too quickly from that end of August 2006 Summer theme series, we had 17, yes SEVENTEEN, songs left over that went unplayed. Damn time constraints are killing me. I had planned a musical side trip to the water- the beach, etc.
    Ah well, maybe next year!
We open with a very odd, unusual set that includes an old folkie doing a Stevie Wonder song, a doo-wop for the Oldies lovers, then something in a style even older than oldies, concluding with a track from a treasured, and very unique vinyl LP. This is the kind of thing I couldn’t get away with anywhere else, and I am eternally grateful to have the opportunity to be able to. It is in fact, the main thing that has kept me there for those near 10 years!
We move on to a universally loved summer song- I have never met anyone who didn’t like it.
Then a song about a summer very close to MY favorite.
We begin the end with an alternate version of a perennial end of summer song, although Engineer Ken couldn’t tell much of a difference.
I would have to play them back to back, but in the released version for instance, BOTH members of the duo sing the opening- here one does, joined by the other shortly after.
This is followed by another end of summer staple.
And we close it all out with a song that was as surprising to me as it may be to you.
This lifetime rocker could never have conceived of choosing this song years ago.
But we all mellow a little and get smarter, and realize that beauty sometimes will wait for us.
    Happy Rest Of The Summer!

    Mike

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE FIRST ANNUAL SUMMER LOLLAPALOOZA PT.3

THE FIRST ANNUAL SUMMER LOLLAPALOOZA PT.3

We open up this chapter from the 2006 shows, with a couple of funky summer classics and our annual playing of All Summer Long.
Then I had this idea that reading the dictionary definition of Summer might be entertaining.
    I don’t know what I was thinking!
Damn, there was nothing I could do to save that- the perils of live radio! Please bear with me.
But we have the BEST new summer song (new to me) that I have heard in years.
    Summertime Thing by Chuck Prophet.
From which we proceeded to play songs of summertime THINGS, lol!
And it truly didn’t occur to me until I was there and saw the date, that I was one day past my 8th anniversary at that station. Time sure does fly.
How in the hell did they put up with me?
Well, there were times it came very close- hehehehehe….!
And coming this month, since that was 2006, my 10TH Anniversary.
I have BIG plans for that!

    Mike
