ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE STRAITS OF DIRE PT.2 END

Continuing on with Dire Straits, their next album was Love Over Gold.
The title was taken from some graffitti they saw!
It was their first # 1 album in the UK.
After a song from that album, I wanna play a good old piece of Rock & Roll, that I know as a B-side to a single I had by Dire Straits. Turns out, over in England it was on an EP.
As we talked about previously, they still love those EP’s in England.
Brothers In Arms was their next album, a huge hit.
And the title track was the world’s 1st CD single!
In fact, the album was one of the first CD’s around to choose from.
I’ll take this one home with an appropriate song.
Listening to the playback, I notice my voice going louder and lower- that’s what happens with a clogged ear.
You can’t tell your own volume, lol!
Have fun!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE STRAITS OF DIRE PT.1

This is a live show I did the other day.
My brain melting with the 3 H’s- hazy, hot and humid.
Plus my left ear was clogged so I could hear almost nothing (unclogged the next day at a doctor’s office).
And, trooper that I am, you would never have suspected!
Now that I have bored the crap out of you about my physical state that day, here is the 1st part of the show, featuring Dire Straits.
I’ll have the biography of the band, with a great story about their unassuming demeanor.
The band owes a great debt to a woman at Warner Bros. A&R Department right here in New York- without her they may have gone unnoticed.
Although Mark Knopfler’s beautiful and inventive guitar playing would have inevitably been discovered by someone!
We’ll start at the beginning, and hear a terrific band grow into more complex arrangements.
Good Music!

Finally Friday brings Black Top drummer, Theo Thumper for a chat and the following tunage from the band: “Bad Boy” comes in as the newest demo from the upcoming album, due to come in November, 08. The tunes, “Shape I’m In”, “Down” and “Feel Free” follow in short order.
Thanks to Teo at Valley of the Stars and Simon & Mariëlle for their support of independent music artists.
Closing out the show is Jack Falk with “Daydreaming Blues” and Belladonna with her rockin’ tune, “Black Swan”.
Chill out best you can this weekend and Uncleshag will be back with fresh tunage Monday! Oh, Yeah!

Longtown Sound 384 Mindy Monday - Thomas Lee, Stephen Cochran, Bo Bice, Gary Nichols, Josh Ritter, Patrick Mitchell, Kenny Chesney

Monday, Monday becomes Mindy, Monday today as Uncleshag and the Longtown Sound turn the play list over to Mindy, MySpace friend and active supporter of the artists she digs. Her words are Uncleshag’s guide as we dig the great tunage Mindy recommends.
Thanks Mindy, you are one great rockin’ gal!
From Mindy’s notes-
- Thomas Lee
Big surprise that he is on my top six and I only need one word to describe him. Talented. This man can do anything but when it comes to music he is a force. “Rest My Bones” is off his album, Atomic Bar which is one of my top five albums, where every song becomes your favorite. I could have picked any of the songs off this album but I chose this track because it simply rocks.
- Stephen Cochran
Is an extremely talented and humble artist that draws everyone around him in like family and when it is time to perform he doesn’t disappoint. “Thinkin’ I’m Drinkin’ ” is going to be released as his third single off his self titled CD and it is the definition of a fun party song…it will have you up out of your seats for sure.
- Bo Bice
Is without question one of the most talented musicians and performers I have ever seen live. There isn’t much more that I need to add to that statement other than if you like live music check this guy out. “Whiskey, Women & Time” - CD “See the Light” - is by far my favorite song of his live set and at every show it becomes a crowd favorite. It is the perfect way to end the night, on your feet dancing.
- Gary Nichols
Is an amazing guitarist with the vocals to back it up. He has the charm of a true southern gentleman but when he gets on stage he is all business and you will be a fan from the first note. “Going Fast” is one of many great songs to choose from but it has become one of my favorite traveling songs to listen to on the road because it will pump you up with energy.
- Josh Ritter
Is just a wonderfully talented performer and songwriter who knows how to tell a story with his music. His lyrics are very honest and he comes across with great humility and respect. “Girl in the War” is my favorite Ritter song. It is moving and beautifully written and if you haven’t heard it…do yourself a favor and listen.
- Patrick Mitchell
The first time I heard him sing I said “WHO IS THAT?” That is how incredible this mans voice is. Very unique, very soulful, and truly powerful. “I Think I Will” is one of several new recordings that Patrick has available for download and it is one of my favorites based solely on the emotion that pours out of him as he performs it.
Mindy, thanks again!

Terrific Tunage Thursday features favorites from listener requests and two of Uncleshag’s most favored. Most days in the long ago past, Uncleshag created every show with a theme.

With songs of parting, passing, fleeting times and the pain associated. So, enjoy this half - hour of indie rock flavored with a sprinkle of Soul and and touch of the Classics. Weekends were made for doing. Got plans?

First Thessalonians
1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BEATLES LOOSE CHANGE VOL.1- PT.2

Let’s continue on, shall we, with singles by the Beatles that remained only singles.
At least if you lived in the UK back when they were originally released, not appearing on any album.
There are quite a few of them, and I certainly will not be getting to them all in these 2 parts.
There will be at least another show, maybe more.
And I will be playing them in the order they came out at the time in England.
Additionally, to further muddy the waters, there is the matter of EP’s.
We had them here in America, but for some reason they were always seemingly more popular in Britain.
For those who may not know, EP stood for Extended Play- they were a cross between a 45 RPM single and a 33 1/3 RPM album.
They were the smaller size of a single but played at the speed of the larger sized album- the extended play came in because they contained 2 or more songs per side instead of one song on each side, with the slower speed compensating for the smaller size.
Damn, I am confusing myself, lol!
In this chapter I will play the Beatles 4-song Long Tall Sally EP, none of which made it onto albums over there.
And of those 4 songs, only one was written by the Beatles- and that was a bigger hit here by the Mamas & Papas.
Finally, I will close out this Volume One with one of the all-time great 2-sided hits.
There will be a Volume Two in the vague future.
For now, let’s just enjoy the music. Whew!

Maybe it’s the tambourines, perhaps the accordian notes bouncing in my head, but the kaliope is real, I say, and it is
never ending.
Please don’t make it stop, in fact, invite it in as you would a hungry child. Feed and nuture the indie music and visit the

ROCKOLLECTIONS: BEATLES LOOSE CHANGE VOL.1- PT.1

Nowadays it seems like almost everything is available on CD.
But if you were a Beatle fan in the 60’s in England (and who wasn’t?), there were singles released there that were NOT put on albums.
At that time anyway, as the folks there were living Beatlemania in real time.
We caught on later.
And the strange thing is, UK albums commonly had 14 songs on them as opposed to the 12 here in the U.S.
Now, many WERE on albums, but I will deal with the Beatle songs that were not- the Loose Change we’ll call it.
If you were a fan in England, you had to buy the 45 RPM single for these songs or you didn’t have them!
And imagine this, She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand were ONLY put out as singles- and in THAT order over there, the reverse of the way we first heard them here.
I will have some very interesting information about each tune- stuff that you likely didn’t know.
While I consider the Beatles the Greatest Band That Ever Existed, I have a confession to make.
I didn’t like I Want To Hold Your Hand. But the flip side blew me away!
And that flip side was on an album, so I won’t be playing it- hehehehehe!
Come join me as we go back and re-create a strange period in Rock & Roll history, when singles still meant more than albums.

Dry heat or sloppy wet, it’s all good! Well, no one’s freezing to death! Come on in, the water and the fishing is fine and there’s always iced tea and shade to cool ya down. ROCKOLLECTIONS: ODDS AND ENDS VOL.1- PT.2

Finishing up with our first Odds & Ends, after a few songs for Heather, I’ll open with one for Paul should he decide to get married again, by a Dutch group called Smyle that had the Beatle sound down pat- especially the John Lennon voice.
I have never wanted Rockollections to be labeled an Oldies show, or a Classic Rock one.
Especially in the Theme shows, if I play an old record, I am using it in a contemporary way.
Besides, some of the older music I play was NEVER played on the radio at all- so throw the Classic tag away.
I just play what I consider the best or most interesting songs I can think of, irregardless of when it was made!
And I have nothing against new music- except maybe that most of it sucks, lol!
I wanna play 3 new songs for you though.
One each by the G-Men, Amer Diab and Mark Wayne Glasmire (and I had fun with his triple name, lol!).
Give a listen and see what you think.
They were the ones I chose that day, and there are more than 3 new songs I enjoy- just want to make that clear to any folks that think I am not open-minded.
The song by Glasmire is about a relationship that has a chance at getting back together.
Made me think of a song by the Del Fuegos, but with less of a chance at reconciliation in it.
After the new stuff, I must say it IS still fun to play the old ones, and I will continue to do so!
So I will end with first, a Chiffons number you should know- but without any MUSIC!
And lastly, Brian Wilson with his daughters, singing a song that tells me I should do these Odds & Ends more often.
Enjoy!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ODDS AND ENDS VOLUME 1- PT.1

After all those Flowers & Gardens & things, I thought I’d take a Personal Day.
Just grabbed some Odds & Ends in the form of CD’s and records and brought them in to the station.
I said to myself, let’s really go free-form and see what happens.
I must thank my pal, Mike Hennessy, for the opening song of the day.
He sent it to me, I didn’t even know it existed, and a perfect fit.
Nice pickup Mickster!
Then a song specifically for Odds & Ends.
After that, something that has been nagging me.
That whole Paul McCartney/Heather Mills divorce.
As I say in the show, I think more people are sympathetic to Paul, and regard Heather as something of a gold-digger.
From the getgo, a song jumped out at me that summed up my feelings on the subject.
That led to another similar song, but the 1st one is the one that says it best for me.
It also occurred to me that McCartney has a song from a fairly recent album called From A Lover To A Friend.
Don’t think he’s going to be singing that too much in concert for a while, lol!
But I wanted to play something by Paul, so why not a very overlooked one that nobody plays anymore?
Probably because it is long, and that upsets radio nowadays- gets in the way of the commercials, and the DJ’s mindless chatter.
So a multi-tuned cut, a terrific example of McCartney the Prolific Tunesmith- songs tumbling together as if he couldn’t contain all the melodies in his head. (And the last in the bunch is my favorite!)
Engineer Ken said he hadn’t heard it in years, see if the same applies to you.
More Odds & Ends to follow- including some NEW music!

New Music Tuesday is alive and well with tunage to throw your back out and make your mind drift away to the lala land we all crave. The fishing is better when pumping indie rock and more into the brainiac areas. Take it outdoors and get some sun and wind in your hair. Rain is coming, get it while you can!
