ROCKOLLECTIONS: MARTIN LUTHER KING AND SONGS OF FREEDOM PT.4 FINAL

We begin our final chapter with another interpretation of the song we ended the last chapter with.
Great songs tend to be covered by other artists, and this one has been done at least by the Chambers Brothers, a weird but thoroughly enjoyable version by the Vanilla Fudge and the one I have chosen- by Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart.
There is just something about the interplay of Beck’s guitar and Stewart’s voice that does it for me.
Martin Luther King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
That same year, Bob Dylan released HIS own version of a song we have already played twice.
I felt I would be cheating you if I didn’t play the serious, poetic, brilliant use of words contained in Dylan’s epic talking about all the ways we are NOT free! So I played it.
Then the sad account of the King assassination- and I do remember thinking, man, what is going on here? You disagree with someone, so you shoot them?
And that will begin our grand finale.
To close it all out, I have 3 of the best songs ever that speak to all of Mankind.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MARTIN LUTHER KING AND SONGS OF FREEDOM PT.3

Martin Luther King’s Birthday was observed Monday, but we got a jumpstart on it with his real Birthday last week. And Freedom is of course a year-round endeavor.
This chapter I want to open up with 2 of the greatest British bands of all time, and their songs of freedom.
In our brief history of Dr. King, we note the injustice of those bad old days- doesn’t make sense really.
And in light of that, the next two song set may seem trivial.
But it was a chance to get us back to some lighter fare, and the freedoms discussed in those songs are as valid as any. Freedom can be a very subjective feeling to those involved.
After that, for those for whom freedom comes easy, Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band.
They were doing country-rock as well or better than anyone during their time, and I have a song Rick wrote in the early 70’s. Neither this one nor others got much radio airplay, and it is the public’s loss.
I will end this episode with one of the best song-to-song segues I have EVER done- those two were made for each other!
Besides Martin and I, you will be treated to Elvis, Minnie Riperton, Cream and more.

Well it was a tough week, but here I am doing what I love to do best.
Taking a Theme and running with it- no worries about playlists, genres, decades, etc.
January 15th was the ACTUAL date of Martin Luther King’s birthday.
So, some history about him and some songs about Martin Luther King and Songs Of Freedom, within the Rock & Roll framework.
I did a LIVE show that day, and here is part one of the result.
It was just me, Engineer Ken and Hendrix, Havens, Byrds, U2, Sebastian, maybe the truly greatest Civil Rights anthem and more…
I am thinking that the best way to hear these four parts would be in a flowing succession- so perhaps you may want to wait until the other three are uploaded here.
But they will work as individual episodes.
Hope you enjoy this, as I was refreshed from my vacation, and the songs in my mind were flowing forth at a rapid and effective pace.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: DESPERADO- WHAT A CONCEPT! PT.2 FINISH

Finishing up the second half of the Eagles’ Desperado album, all through this episode we will try to point out a lot of the similarities between the Outlaw and the Rock Star.
Uncannily, far more than you might expect.
Take a listen to Outlaw Man, and the regrets of Saturday Night.
All things considered, the Desperado album works as a concept, and simply as a damn good listen!
Now remember, this was broadcast on November 6, 2007, and that was Election Day here.
So to take us out, I played an old forgotten ditty by Steve Goodman called the Election Day Rag- joined on piano and backup vocals by a fellow named Bob Dylan.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: DESPERADO- WHAT A CONCEPT! PT.1

I have been on vacation, and a good one it was, so I apologize to anyone who may have noticed a lack of Rockollections.
I will be at the studio this Tuesday, and new shows will be done, including one for Martin Luther King’s Birthday I am still putting together.
Dipping into my own vault, here is Part One of a show that was broadcast November 6, 2007.
THE BEST CONCEPT ALBUM YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD!
Years ago, Engineer Ken told me the Eagles’ Desperado LP was a concept album. I hadn’t noticed.
It is a terrific, smart piece of work, and about time we got around to it.
I never posted it as a podcast, feeling any dope can just simply play an album straight through.
So, in a pinch, armed with my own endearing dopiness and some reviews (including Paul Gambacini’s original Rolling Stone review from 1973), here I am playing and talking about Desperado.
It was only the Eagles 2nd album, so a rather brash act to do a concept album so soon.
I think they succeeded with this effort, see if you do.
Some songs will be familiar, some will not- and one song contains some of the best lyrics in the history of rock & roll.
