ROCKOLLECTIONS: HALLOWEEN 2007- VAMPIRES PT.2 CONCLUSION

Vapires 2 Conclusion

Moving on with more time spent with the Creatures Of The Night, and my own trapped-inside-with-me monster Lon, I will open this final episode with a couple of TV theme songs done by strange-named groups.
Both were very popular shows, and one was a spinoff of the other.
Still trying to find out WHAT’S HE BUILDING IN THERE?
I’ll talk a bit about old Vlad the Impaler, the model for Dracula in Transylvania. And more vampire lore.
Then some Music For Vampires (that’s what it is called), and another song named Vampires by the Umbrellas.
I’ll play one last Vampire tune that is hard to describe, but it does appeal to me. It is by a group that met here in New York called Marcy Playground, and New York plays a role in it.
I had more songs about Vampires, but it was apparent to Ken and I that maybe this really wasn’t our type of music, lol!
I don’t know what I was thinking when I was picking out these songs- but maybe it was hearing so many of them in a row that made me switch directions.
That, and Lon, now Loni, and the voices in my head were ganging up on me too, lol!
Changing on the proverbial dime, I had the flip side of an old 1950’s single, scratches and all, that was called The Monster.
A VERY interesting song, with very interesting lyrics, in which the aforementioned Monster is actually Rock & Roll.
Hey man, that was the general attitude at the time- this evil music was shaking up the country!
Check out that period’s obligatory saxophone in there.
I will close out this year’s party with The Slime- nothing to be afraid of, in fact it was a dance, lol!
Happy Halloween Everyone!!!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: HALLOWEEN 2007- VAMPIRES PT.1

On this eve of All Hallows Eve, I thought we would do our show on Vampires.
Hey, we just finished Angels, so a direct line, right?
Free-form need not make sense, lol!
Now, you will hear some music different from what you might expect from me.
Not sure if that is a good thing!
I will open with a group from Boston, then one a little closer, Long Island, My Chemical Romance, who are of the opinion that Vampires Will Never Hurt You.
The studio was invaded by a half wolf/half wild boar that I named Lon- we had to change that name in the next episode.
And we are still after all these years wondering, WHAT’S HE BUILDING IN THERE?
Got the Arctic Monkeys, and a pretty funny song about a Vampire Club by Voltaire.
There is an unmistakable sexual component to vampires, and that living for eternity is a damn good selling point too!
So, as Lon licks and slobbers all over me, we’ll end this one with Annie Lennox, and Love Song To A Vampire.
More sucking to come.
WHAT?

ROCKOLLECTIONS: CALLING ALL ANGELS PT.4 END, FOR NOW!

Well, I must say it is with some sadness that I bring us to the Grand Finale of this musical look at Angels. In case you are wondering what took so long to finish, I had this episode all done and ready to be uploaded.
But then Angel- that little Devil- decided to have more fun and froze my computer- I lost it all and had to start all over again. I gotta blame somebody, lol! But it is true.
I will open this final chapter with some ID’s I owe from the last one.
Engineer Ken was making me laugh and making this one more fun because he kept writing and saying ANGLES instead of Angels, lol! The beginning set will start with a great duet between two musical legends, then a song that is actually from an album Angel left in my house, (there are always things like albums left behind during a breakup- I got some of her albums, undoubtedly she got some of mine). The set closes with another terrific duet. Bonnie Raitt calls John Prine onstage to do a classic Prine song.
Those 3 should flow nicely.
I’ll read a lovely poem sent to me by a sweet girl from Illinois, that she found on the wall of a church.
It is simply called “Angels”.
Then one last trip to the movies, and the beginning of the end.
My three favorite Angel movies are The Bishop’s Wife with Cary Grant, of course Wings Of Desire which we already played something from, and this one…with my favorite movie Angel. Some scenes from it, and fitting music.
As always, I hope you have enjoyed this topic and journey, using music as our means of transportation. And Ang, I hope I did you proud.
I counted them, and I had 111 Angel songs (maybe that means something to a numbers person!). So there were plenty left over, which would almost guarantee sequels and return visits to the Angels.
In the meantime…Ring Them Bells, folks!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: CALLING ALL ANGELS PT.3

As we continue with our Rock & Roll musical exploration of Angels, I have to explain the beginning. Frequently, people outside will wave, make faces or something, or Engineer Ken will say something into my headphones just as I am about to open the show in an attempt to make me laugh and screw it up. That was the case here. See what I have to put up with, lol?
Being a man of limited ideas, since we opened Part One with a Calling All Angels, I thought we would do it again.
This time by a group called Train.
There are a few people I tell when I am thinking about doing a Theme Show.
Sometimes they have good, even brilliant, suggestions.
Sometimes horrid ones- AAHHHHHHHHH!!!!
And I keep it small because when they do suggest something and I DON’T play, they may be insulted and I have to explain why I didn’t.
Not enough time mostly, didn’t fit in anywhere, or it just plain sucked. This time, so many of them mentioned a song I had not the slightest intention of playing, I had to re-think it. Kind of glad I did play it now, cause it did bring a warm memory of simpler times.
We will discover that Angels are not just for crackpots- there are many stores devoted to them, and prestigious universities teach courses in them, including Harvard Divinity School and Boston College.
Got a cover of an oldie to play you may not have ever heard, by John Lennon from a posthumous album released in 1984. Interestingly, Angels can be found anywhere. Knocking at your door, living right next door to you, even in a Broken Radio! We’ll take a look and listen to that phenomenon.
One more episode to go.

Longtown Sound 224

Monday, Monday. JFK proposed, “Ask not”. Remember, “Don’t trust anyone over thirty”? That was a keen phrase back in the 60’s.
At the genesis of “Flower Power” American youth were told not to trust the ones who gave them their very being, their friends parents and all holding positions of authority. Spock instructed to “just say no” to spanking.
LBJ said, “I will not”. And, being the dumb sheep that we all are at that tweenage, age, so many blindly followed. “Baa, Baa, Baa”.
The times, evidently, are not and have never been, “a’changin’”, Mr. Dylan.
We now only notice slight advancement in the production of the wool being pulled over our evolved optical pick ups. Sweet! That’s imported, technology-rich, wool, RFK. Oh, say, can’t you see? Can you dig it?
Well, the world keeps spinning, changes or not and Longtown and Uncleshag carry on along - ATWT, spinning more great indie rock for the manly and the lovely subscribers and their friends around the world. ROCKOLLECTIONS: CALLING ALL ANGELS PT.2

Around 2000-2001, I visited Angel out in Pennsylvania.

I brought with me a movie I thought she would like- City Of Angels.

It had nothing to do with her name, it was just that after going together for a long time, I kind of knew what she might like (I wasn’t always correct, lol!).

She flipped over the movie, bought it and watched it many times. However, I knew it was based on a German movie, directed by Wim Wenders, called Wings Of Desire, but I hadn’t seen it at that time. Well, to me, now that I have, there is no comparison.

The Wenders film is in black & white, is much darker in mood, and has subtitles except when Peter Falk is speaking.

It is far superior- although that’s just my opinion.

So, I thought I would open this chapter up with my favorite scene from the movie- of course it is with Peter Falk and in English. What he says about living as a human is so simple and beautiful- just a wonderful moment captured on film.

A COMPANERO!

This will not be our last trip to the movies for Angels.

As for the rest of this episode, I think I will say nothing and just let you listen to the directions we will go in.

However, I do want to thank a dear friend, Denise Decker, for making me listen closer to a beautiful song from the City Of Angels soundtrack I might have overlooked.

And one other thing, I will bring us to this halfway point with a song that has taken on a new meaning for me.

You will understand what I mean.

Many more Angels to come in the next 2 installments.

2 Timothy 2:8-15 (KJV)
8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:
9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:
12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GRATEFUL, DEAD OR ALIVE PT.4 END

We will begin this final chapter on the Grateful Dead with a different sound for them, no doubt because it was produced by the always excellent Lowell George of the group Little Feat.
I have some more fun facts, including something I didn’t know- members of the Grateful Dead sang the National Anthem at the last San Francisco Giants baseball game at wonderfully drafty old Candlestick Park.
Appropriately it was against the Los Angeles Dodgers, continuing the rivalry that of course began here in New York City so many years ago.
Gonna return to the American Beauty LP for a good old good one, Brokedown Palace.
Then I am going to play the oldest song on any of these shows, one that dates back to the Dead’s very first album from way back in 1967, and is rarely if ever heard nowadays.
It has a very hippie sound to it, most certainly proper for 1967 San Francisco psychedelia, that could as easily have been done by any of the groups in the scene there then- Jefferson Airplane, Mobey Grape, etc.
Even the title is indicative of it’s delightful trippiness, The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion).
Closing out with a few more Dead classics, I do hope I played the songs you expected to hear as well as the unexpected.
That unpredictability is what I feel keeps this little show fresh and warm- like you are a guest in my home and we are just playing records.
Please get me another beer while you are up, lol!
Next, a Theme Series that will have a lot of meaning for me. If you have been listening since last Christmas, you will know the reason why.

The edges of all objects in the sunlight took on a kaleidoscope effect that was most interesting, to say the least. Out of the sunlight the effect ceased but it continues at 10:30 AM on the Southeast coast. Like the tunage in today’s Longtown Sound, all have gilt edges and vocals that carry meat in the meaning. Listen, understand and comment to the fine entertainers in today’s terrific Thursday show!

If tempted and without resistance, go for the heaping dish of vanilla ice cream on the side. A tasty treat!

Longtown Sound 211
The Sunday Edition

2 Timothy 8-14
8 Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God,
9 who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
11 For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher,
12 and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him.
13 Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
14 Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GRATEFUL, DEAD OR ALIVE PT.3

Sorry for the delay in these posts, I am working on the next Theme Series. Opening this one, I have a real, true, accurate, sickening observation, lol!
Got some info about Jerry Garcia I didn’t know.
Like, he lost the middle finger on one hand at the age of 4 due to he and his brother chopping wood…
Got another favorite of mine to play, Franklin’s Tower.
As you probably know, there are Deadheads who follow the band around for months and even years. I cannot understand that, given my all-star caliber laziness!
The Grateful Dead played more free concerts than any other band, and were at both Monterey and Woodstock They are famous for their ability to GROUP improvise, often blending one song into the other. In my opinion, seamlessly not even causing a Ripple (get it?).
And man, I had my problems reading during this one- the words wouldn’t sit still. Tried to beat them with a stick!
Wonder if I can do better next time, lol?

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GRATEFUL, DEAD OR ALIVE PT.2

We are finally doing the Grateful Dead.
Continuing on, I’ll have the original names the group was called (one of them a mouthful), before choosing their final name out of a dictionary.

Speaking of mouthfuls and tongue-twisters, I had a dandy in this episode.

They actually started their performing career at a bookstore. Sounds so beatnik, man! Without a doubt, they had the best musicians in all the San Francisco scene.

Although we had the Very Best Of …CD, I was concentrating mainly on their two classic albums, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty for these 2 parts.

A song not on that Best Of may still be my personal Best Of- has been for years.

It is New Speedway Boogie, about the infamous concert at Altamont Speedway.

The Dead were there, as were the Jefferson Airplane and the Rolling Stones, and during the Stones set doing Sympathy For The Devil, a guy was stabbed to death by the Hell’s Angels.

In hindsight, maybe not a good idea having the Hell’s Angels doing security, and for a period the Stones stopped performing that song in concert.
Did you know the Grateful Dead were folkies, and went electric after seeing the Lovin’ Spoonful?

All this and more coming in future chapters.

But we will end this one with a song for September being National Biscuit Month.

Meet you back here after you are done chewing!
