Longtown Sound 205
The Sunday Edition

Psalm 62
1 Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.
2 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
3 How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down— this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
4 Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.
5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.
6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
9 Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
11 One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God,
12 and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; and, “You reward everyone according to what they have done.”

ROCKOLLECTIONS: GRATEFUL, DEAD OR ALIVE PT.1

What a long, strange trip it’s been.
After all these years, I have not featured the Grateful Dead on the show! Not sure why- I guess I didn’t feel I could do them justice in one hour. But why not play more than an hour?
They are certainly deserving. So, we will rectify that in the next bunch of episodes I will give you some history of the band and its members. Odd, how they keep having keyboard players who die. Reminds me, not in a joking way, of the Spinal Tap bass players- which for them, was intended as a joke.
I gave Engineer Ken a bunch of Dead songs, and I said just play what you want, throw in a few odd ones, and I will bounce off what you play Well, he creeped me out with the last two selections here, lol!
There will be lots more…ahem…gratefully!

Saturday is the day to put the rubber to the road and the pedal halfway to the metal due to the high prices of gasoline. Used to be, once upon a time when speeds of 100+ were reached on the trips to the beach. nowadays, it’s the speed limit for sure. Uncleshag wonders if it’s age or wisdom kicking in. I prefer the latter, but see the former in the daily mirror. Mirror this tunage to your friends today, won’t you. Reposting is the wish of every poster. Enjoy your Saturday, the temps and the tunage are hot!

Psalm 79:1-9
1. O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.
2. They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the air for food, the flesh of your faithful to the wild animals of the earth.
3. They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.
4. We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us.
5. How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealous wrath burn like fire?
6. Pour out your anger on the nations that do not know you, and on the kingdoms that do not call on your name.
7. For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation.
8. Do not remember against us the iniquities of our ancestors; let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low.
9. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: NEW YORK CITY SONGS PT.3 END

I am gonna wrap up the New York songs for 2007 with this final chapter.
What’s your favorite day of the week? For a lot of New Yorkers it is Sunday.
I’ll open with a song about that, then one about Rainy Days in NYC. I like them!
Then a number that is hard to classify by that quintessential New Yorker, and a personal favorite, Dion DiMucci- reunited with the Belmonts from an old vinyl LP I have to think came out in 1967.
They didn’t put the year on them back then, lol!
It is one of 4 songs he wrote for the album, and a rocker.
After that, a tongue in cheek tour of New York from back when the city was going down the crapper.
Aztec Two Step doing some serious namedropping, (and namedropping is a planned subject of some future shows), with the likes of Dave DeBuscherre, Francois Truffault and Marcel Marceau.
Got one of my fave British folk groups, Steeleye Span with something called New York Girls, featuring a guest gig on ukelele by someone you would never expect.
We will give the final word to Julie Gold, who wrote and recorded our chosen song while she was temporarily a member of the Four Bitchin’ Babes.
As she sings, there was a time before the Kennedys, the Beatles, Vietnam, when people did things the right way.
They sailed into Lady Liberty’s harbor of hopes and dreams proudly, though undoubtedly intimidated.
However, they entered our country honestly, as opposed to sneaking over the border. They signed the damn guestbook!
There is a melancholy feel to the song, of perhaps not living up to those simple yet now lofty values.
Nonetheless, a proper way to end.
Goodnight, New York!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 9/11

As today is September 11th, this will be a more serious chapter than the ones before it. This is our Pearl Harbor!

And it is the first time September 11th has fallen on a Tuesday since that fateful day. If there are any instructions for you for this show, they would be LISTEN TO THE WORDS!

Over the years, I have explained that although the Pentagon was struck, songs about Washington D.C. are hard to find, and are always about the government- usually with some sort of protest or humor.

So no offense to the people there for mainly concerning ourselves with New York. And in truth, we did take the bigger hit.

But there is a song about United 93, the plane the passengers rose up on and crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Neil Young did it a few years ago. Followed by a song by Alan Jackson that captures the feeling across our country on this day 6 years ago.

While I hate to repeat a song, I got so much feedback on The Bravest by Tom Paxton it seemed proper. As a companion piece, a song from Bruce Springsteen that repeatedly speaks of strength- and faith, hope and love.

Those feelings were the Theme for last year’s 5th Anniversary Of September 11th, and again I remind you to scroll down to find those 4 episodes if you are interested.

We have a beautiful, understated song dedicated to New York for 9/11 called Goodbye by John Mayer, and will close with a very old one I felt fit the mood.

Speaking of moods, 9/11 is always a mixture of emotions for me. Although I feel enormous sadness and a spiritual connection, I seem to get more angry with each passing year. Hey, I am only human- and it is still too close and too recent, with a great sense of personal loss. Call me whatever you like, I will be honest with you and myself- time does not heal all wounds.

Maybe others are higher up on the evolution scale than I, but I am convinced I will not only never forget, but I will never forgive those evil bastards. But to all who suffered in any way, and their families, you have my love and prayers.

God bless America!
-Mike

Longtown Sound 187 Featuring- Robert Walker, Jay Scott, The Lascivious Biddies, Janis Ian, Phil Ayoub, Brad Fletcher

Longtown Sound 187

Tuesday, September 11, 2007. It’s an evening production and unlike the daytime shows, these are and tend to be more on the mellow side. It has been a day of remembering and the somber attitude in so many faces reflect concerns and worries. Will we as a nation ever get over the tradgedy of insane acts performed by insane fanatical people? No, we as a people of this world are not promised that. Just the opposite. The Man of Truth didn’t warn us, He simply stated the facts. Accept or reject. That is the bottom line. Listen to the Tuesday Tunage, please, and have a restful thirty minutes.

Oh, and at the end of our march, we will be turning on 42nd Street. Wear something light, comfortable shoes, and keep in step. Let’s look sharp out there!

Longtown Sound 185 - Featuring- Darrell Evans, The Gaithers, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Adams Crumpton, Jennifer Knapp, Marvin Gaye, The Talleys

Longtown Sound 185
The Sunday Edition

Psalm 103
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
21 Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.
22 Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: NEW YORK CITY SONGS PT.1

As we approach the 6th Anniversary of 9/11,
I will continue with a tradition I started on the first anniversary.
Playing songs about New York City- a celebration of my city, and mostly a sort of aural way of spitting in the eye of those responsible, and those fanatical nitwits who continue to love blowing things up!
For a far more serious musical look at 9/11, scroll down to last year’s 5th Anniversary four-part series.
I have to tell you, there are more songs about NYC than ANY other place on earth- nothing even comes close. And each year I find more and more.
Over the years, I have played some sets and songs I am really proud of.
This time, I will begin with a song that if you have spent any time in New York City in the last 25-30 years, was unavoidable.
Although I live in Brooklyn, I fully realize that when people think of New York, they visualize the borough of Manhattan.
A song for Manhattan, by the pairing of Rod Stewart & Bette Midler.
Then a great rocker for global tracking the location of our radio station.
While people come here from all over the world, there has always been a migration from the American South.
I’ll play two songs- one for a Southerner we made a good impression on, and the other a bad one.
We will close this first chapter out with a tune by Lucy Kaplansky, about what can make a girl feel like she is the prettiest in all of New York City- the guy she is with!
Coming up next, a march down the world’s most famous street.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: LATE LABOR DAY AND MY ANNIVERSARY

Due to some time I spent on vacation,
we are a little late with things. But so what!
I have a few songs for a Late Labor Day to open this chapter up.
Beginning with an independent group called Makar (a 15th century Scottish term for poet I am told), and their song I Hate My Job. I am sure many can relate to that sentiment.
Then we will hear from the group Morphine with for me the worst thing about a job, followed by a real old one that pretty much sums up the universal plight of the workingman, by Ray Charles- now THERE’S a segue you will not find many places, lol!
The Manfred Mann show I did a while back was a very popular one, and on it I mentioned the first version of Bob Dylan’s If You Gotta Go I ever heard was in French by the Fairport Convention. They called it Si Du Dois Partir.
Don’t ask me to pronounce it, but I will play it.
From French to Spanish, with a song I haven’t played in decades by the Young Rascals, called Sueno.
It was, I believe, the flip side of Groovin’- and the Rascals, like all the truly good ones, were known for some amazing flip sides. I can easily think of two or three more that are better than most A-sides!
Then some humble self-indulgence.
I started at my station on August 25, 1998- and miraculously have lasted now over 9 years!
I may seem like a sweetheart of a guy on the air, but…it was touch and go many a time, lol!
So two songs for that- one a great big thanks to any and all who listen or have anything to do with the show.
The other for my inspiration and teacher,
Scott Muni.
I play music the way I do because of Scott, and of course several other muses.
But Scottso was the first that did it for me, and gave me the bug to present songs in a hopefully smart fashion- for a smart audience.
Beginning in December 1967, and lasting for I don’t know how many years, Scott ended his show every day with this song.
And in those early FM years, he used to be on SEVEN DAYS a week!
He would after that always play it on his anniversary show, and I would always tear up from all the great memories that radio, and true radio personalities (which are becoming extinct), can uniquely provide.
I still miss the guy, and I will do my weak, lame imitation of him to close this one out.
As I have been podcasting for just over a year, just think, you missed all the incredibly dumb and stupid things I have said and done in the years prior.
Be as thankful for that as I am so hugely thankful to you for listening now, lol!

Longtown Sound 184 Featuring- Blake Morgan feat. Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Vasquez, Shea Breaux Wells, Stacie Rose, Journey, Doc Roberts, Edible Red, JMADD

Longtown Sound 184

Friday’s Longtown Sound comes as Uncleshag is ready for fall and cooler weather. Fall and winter were great growing up. The atmosphere seemed to change and Rock and Roll flowed through the air with lightning speed into my AM receiver’s mono ear plug. With a handy flashlight, bundled under a mountain of Mama’s homemade quilts I ruled a warm haven and a refuge from the harsh realities of Vietnam and eight grade Algebra. Tough times called for more than six transistors in a pocket radio. Uncleshag had to have fourteen transistors at the minimum. Great times and great memories of great tunage. That’s three greats. Enjoy Friday’s ear picked tunage!
