ROCKOLLECTIONS: THIS IS A MANN’S WORLD PT.2 END

mann2.jpg

Coming back with Manfred Mann, we’ve got Pretty Flamingo by them.

Then another of their many interpretations of Bob Dylan songs- this time his Just Like A Woman.

Manfred Mann was on of the few groups to successfully replace their lead singer and still remain at the top of their game.

The not so well known You Gave Me Somebody To Love is next, and the opening piano riff reminds me off the Vince Guaraldi Trio, the jazz group known for Cast Your Fate To The Wind and the Charlie Brown soundtracks.

Seemingly, ALL the British bands of that period HAD to do a cover of Muddy Water’s Got My Mojo Workin’- here is Manfred Mann’s contribution. And it rocks! Gets my mojo workin’- but that ain’t hard!

With their new lead singer, Mike D’Abo replacing Paul Jones, the group had their biggest hit in two years with yet another Dylan song, The Mighty Quinn.

Handbags & Gladrags I knew by Rod Stewart, but give a listen to their version of this excellent song.

Finally, a tune that bounced around in my head for over 20 years, and I never knew who did it- never knew any more than the part I would sing to myself!

Well, it was Manfred Mann.

See if you remember it.

Like I say on the show, old songs are like old friends- sometimes you haven’t run into them for years, and it feels so good when you do!

This whole Manfred Mann thing was fun.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THIS IS A MANN’S WORLD PT.1

I think I can guarantee you a fun time with this one,
it was a treat for me to do!
The music of that 60’s British Invasion group, Manfred Mann.
Just wait till you hear these songs- the memory section of your brain will be in overdrive.
We will start off with a countdown, 5-4-3-2-1.
The band was asked to provide a new theme for the famous British TV music show, Ready, Steady, Go.
That was what they came up with, and it was their first hit.
Then it is on to two nonsense titled songs, including their biggest ever hit, Do Wa Diddy Diddy- and listen closely, I have a rare TRUE stereo version that you don’t usually hear.
As usual, I will be telling you a bit about the band throughout.
Next up, the recipe that made ME- Hubble Bubble, Toil & Trouble.
Followed by a racy song for its time, written by Bob Dylan, though not released by him.
A song I first heard in FRENCH- by the old Fairport Convention, called by them, Si Tu Doir Partir.
Well, here is the first English version I heard. If You Gotta Go, Go Now (Or Else You’ll Have To Stay All Night). My sentiments exactly!
If I didn’t outright say it, I suggested as much many times in my lifelong bachelor life, lol!
The tune reached # 2 on the British charts despite being banned or edited by many stations.
Then one of the most autobiographical songs I have ever heard, The One In The Middle.
Listen closely to those lyrics- they names NAMES! Of course they are their OWN names, but still…
Got their version of the old Coasters song after that, Poison Ivy- and a damn good version it is.
We will close this episode out with one I’ll bet you haven’t heard in years, Ha Ha Said The Clown- and a song that always make me really laugh out loud, thinking of those folks who are afraid of clowns.
That calls for another Mike Pell Moment Of Clarity.
People, now hear this. There are many things in the world to fear. Clowns are NOT one of them, LOL!!!
By the way, Engineer Ken said he was dedicating that clown song to me.
Wonder why?
There will be more Manfred forthcoming in Part Two.

The tunage is all still ear-picked, just ear-picked-pop. I may be too pooped to pop but I can still hear the goodness in the harmonies and lyrics. ROCKOLLECTIONS: MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL 1967 PT.4 AND END

Going to begin this final chapter on the Monterey Pop Festival
with another of our Fun Flubs.
Engineer Ken brought me back with the wrong theme music, and while I was laughing, I was perfectly willing to go along with it. He stopped though- and I came back with the proper theme.
Like it makes a difference! But you get two beginnings for the price of none.
We’ll open up with some more about that groundbreaking sound system developed for the concert.
Then it is off to Janis!
I can still remember the first time I heard Ms. Joplin. I had never heard a woman…I had never heard ANYONE sing like that!
That VOICE! It was amazing, and I totally flipped over it!
From the album Cheap Thrills with Big Brother & The Holding Company, we’ll hear the classic Ball And Chain. And that album and this song, made her an instant star.
I should point out that if you have seen the movie documentary of the Monterey Pop Festival, or intend to see it, there is that wonderful scene where the camera switches to Mama Cass Elliott as she mouths the words “WOW!” after Janis’ performance! It just blew everyone away!
Along with Hendrix and Otis Redding, this was the 3rd act that came before an unsuspecting audience and blew everyone away. All of them bringing magic and shockwaves to the music world!
Beaver & Krausse were at the Festival, trying to sell Moog synthesizers. They later signed a recording contract with Warner Bros.
And believe it or not, I still have some old vinyl records by them. They were a bit odd, and it might be too much for you, but I just may dip into their stuff and give you taste someday.
Part of the Festival organizers were the Mamas & Papas, and they were the act that closed it all out on that concluding Sunday night. We’ll hear from that set.
I am gonna close THIS whole series out with a number released later in that wonderful year of 1967, by Eric Burdon & The Animals.
It is called “Monterey”, a wonderful song that not only mentioned the feeling of the scene and the acts that played Monterey Pop, but included credible impressions of those artists- and the instruments they used too! Please give a close listen to this one. It’s a sadly neglected gem, even to this day.
And it contains one of my favorite lines in all of Rock & Roll:
“If you wanna find truth in life, don’t pass MUSIC by”.
Amen!

Psalm 138:1-8
1 I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise;
2 I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything.
3 On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul.
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth.
5 They shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD.
6 For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL PT.3

Heading back out west for the Monterey Pop Festival
in the Summer Of Love 1967, let’s have some Buffalo Springfield.
The best way to have your buffalo!
Monterey was full of firsts. The first multi-cultural concert, with both established and new acts.
It was Jimi Hendrix’s first exposure here, and the first racially mixed, primarily white, audience for Otis Redding- who became a Pop Sensation as a result.
But most importantly, all these disparate artists got to MEET each other. And they got the feeling that something big was about to happen to popular music. The times they were a-changin’!
Funny, but I always thought the 1st version of the classic Hey Joe was done by the Leaves (I said SEEDS in the show- sorry!). Followed closely by the great band, Love.
It has come to my attention that the Byrds introduced that song to the world.
So we’ll hear that, and another one about President Kennedy preceeded and followed by a self-indulgent rant from, I think, Roger McGuinn on the JFK assassination.
It’s ok Roger, I still think the world of you!
We’ll hear Country Joe & The Fished stoned- at least I hope they are stoned- nobody could be that bad clear-headed, lol!
Back to Hendrix for his literally fiery version of Wild Thing- and it has always brought a smile to my face when about halfway through, he references Frank Sinatra’s Strangers In The Night.
Listen for it.
For the record, Monterey was the first Rock & Roll Benefit Concert.
And it was the first huge, outdoor concert with a new, innovative sound system.
Must have been nice to be there that weekend. And it only cost a buck!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL PT.2

I am sorry for the delay.
After a lengthy look at Fathers, we now travel back to Monterey, California in the year 1967.
The Monterey Pop Festival was the model for all future festivals- although in terms of pure innocence none came close.
And it was a BENEFIT concert, with all proceeds STILL all these years later being contributed to the non-profit recipients.
This time, I’ve got some Canned Heat (who I used to call Sterno) doing some old Elmore James.
Without question, Monterey sparked access to acts who changed not only the music, but the culture as well.
So we move on to Otis Redding, who hit the ground running with Shake- the old Sam Cooke song.
And he did Sam proud. Then he sang one for the “Love Crowd”, as he called it.
He never expected such a reception from an overwhelmingly white audience, and was deeply touched by it.
Otis later said it, but you can hear it in his voice. He knew he had tapped into something, and he was so palpably happy.
Incredibly, Otis died only a few weeks later in that plane crash!
I will read some statements from the legendary Lou Adler on the smooth running of the Festival. That never happened again!
Then it is on to the Who, who destroyed their instruments at the end of their set- something they had been doing all along in their native England, but left festival-goers here open-mouthed and stunned.
And set the stage for Jimi Hendrix to later try to top!
The Fathers Day series I just added here I did last year.
So, I’ve got one more song for you about Father’s Day for THIS year.
If you can remember this one, it was the B-side of a single in 1970, you are GOOD!
We are halfway through this series now- two more chapters to come.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL 1967 PT.1

The idea for this next series was inspired by Uncle Shag
of the Longtown Sound Podcast, when he just happened to
send me some music I had never heard before.

It turns out that this weekend marks the anniversary of the Monterey Pop Festival, held June 16-18, 1967.
All songs played in this series will be actual performances from that Festival, and if you are like me, many of these things you probably have never heard.
Now to give you some perspective, this was the beginning of the famous Summer Of Love, and the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper was barely 2 weeks old.
And I was totally unaware of it all- this whole FM free-form progressive rock thing was just about to enter my life, but not quite yet.
We will begin with members of the Jefferson Airplane talking about their experiences at Monterey, and go right into a couple of songs by them.
One of them, High Flyin’ Bird, would be released later on the marvelous LP, Mixed Bag by Richie Havens- an album that, well…changed my life!
We’ll have some Jimi Hendrix Experience, who blew everyone away with their 1st major concert appearance in America.
I will read you the roster of artists for the entire Festival weekend.
And it should be pointed out that, unlike Woodstock, these artists were NOT paid, the proceeds went to non-profit organizations- with the exception of Ravi Shankar who got $3,000.
Very spiritual Ravi, lol!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE WIZZARD OF ROY, END- AND ONE FOR WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Returning for our conclusion of Roy Wood’s Wizzard,
we’ll play that other # 1 UK single they scored with, Angel Fingers.
An incredibly costly single to make- reportedly, as much was spent on it as was on Paul McCartney’s entire Band On The Run album!
Did you know that while in the U.S., Wizzard guested on the Beach Boys song, “It’s OK”, from 15 Big Ones?
This crazed band, and I love them for it, were all over the place- just like my musical tastes.
Got some country rock and good old-fashioned rock & roll to prove it.
Now in my opinion, their absolute BEST song was a Christmas song.
But it is June, and you can’t play a…or can you?
We will close Wizzard out with another great Spectorish tune, This Is The Story Of My Love.
Now the day I did this live show, last Tuesday, it was World Environment Day.
For that, I dipped into the Moody Blues catalogue for one of my favorites by them- it never fails to touch me, and bring home to me my small significance in this vast universe.
But I am a PART of it!
This was a very strange show, but I had a helluva good time doing it, lol!

Psalm 146:1-10
1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!
2 I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long.
3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help.
4 When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish.
5 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God,
6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever;
7 who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free;
8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous.
9 The LORD watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
10 The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE WIZZARD OF ROY PT.1

Gonna open this one with a few seconds
of my good friend Uncle Shag, host and star of the Longtown Sound Podcast on WLSO.FM. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, LOL! Way to go, Unc!
Then it is time for something to file under strange but good- Roy Wood’s Wizzard.
Roy Wood was a founding member of the Move and the Electric Light Orchestra (stayed only for their 1st album).
There is a DEFINITE Phil Spector Wall Of Sound influence in Wizzard’s music- in fact, I think he took it a step further.
We’ll open with a proper song, and have some biography of the group throughout.
This was a LIVE show, and I had just heard that morning that ex-Yankee 3rd Baseman and a great defensive ballplayer, Clete Boyer had died.
So I thought the song Ballpark Incident might be fitting.
Then a GREAT song that never made it over here in the States but hit # 1 for weeks in England, See My Baby Jive.
Listen to this one, loaded with Phil Spector! I love it!
Then, I had promised my internet pals from Plymouth, England, Kaz & Shaz that I would play a song for each of them. Their Wizzard favorites.
They are both somewhat fanatics about all things Move, ELO, Wizzard and anything to do with those groups. Shaz probably even more than Kaz.
A typical couple- one picked the shortest song I had and the other chose the longest.
That strikes me as quite comical!
Hope you like this group that has pretty much gone unrecognized, certainly here in the U.S., and probably most of the world.
There will be a Part Two.

Longtown Sound 95

Wow! Thursday here a few hours early to allow for a fishing trip requiring an early riser. If you know someone fitting this description, tell them to stay in bed, beacuase Uncleshag is draining the Lake today of those awful, menacing Largemoth Bass. It is a tough job and thanks for all the offers of help, but I can assure you, I’ll manage. Yep. Fishing and indie music, tunage for the tuna cousins. Enjoy your Thursday, whatever less than fishing you might be doing.
