Rainy Thursday here on the lake. Thank goodness I set tomato plants in the garden yesterday. The first crop got burned pretty well by the last cold snap. But ‘maters will be here soon from the bucket of cherry tomatos on the porch. Just like life, keep on hoeing, fertilizing and weeding ’til living becomes nutrition to body, heart and soul. The fruits are great! Enjoy the Thursday Tunage.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: HOW DO I GET TO CARNEGIE HALL PT.4

As we keep up the celebration of the 116th Anniversary Of Carnegie Hall, this episode centers on some of the ladies who have played there.
And it occurred to me after the fact, that all 3 ladies were born in New York City.
Melanie, who we left off with, was born in Queens, this opening gal in the Bronx, and later the most prolific writer of them all, in Brooklyn.
Can you imagine the feeling of native New Yorkers headlining that grand Hall?
So we start with a song you probably know by Blood, Sweat & Tears. But by it’s composer, the late great Laura Nyro. Strange to hear this one now that she has died.
I’ll have more scintillating and hard to pronounce facts about the building, and a personal reflection on my 1st visit to Carnegie Hall.
Then that lady from Brooklyn, opening a set of music with a song about going Home Again- maybe a good idea as this Sunday is Mother’s Day!
Believe me, with all the music she wrote, not only for herself but mostly for others, she had quite a repertoire to choose from. And this concert took place as she was enjoying the incredible success of her own best-selling album- one of the great records of all time.
And isn’t it always such a thrilling feeling when a surprise guest shows up at a concert?
That’s the case here!
Isaak Stern said of Carnegie Hall, “the Hall itself is an instrument”.
With those acoustics they have there, that is most certainly true- and it may be the best place in the country to listen to live music!
Let’s give a listen.

“It was really nice of Jude to give you that Martin.” Jenny’s mom half muttered to herself. She was trying to break the intense, discerning look on Jim’s face as she had been for half an hour. In a bit, Jim sits back, relaxing, feeling a little sleepy, he has questions.
“What is your name?”
“It’s Jill, I have always been just Jill, Jim.”
“Where are you from?”
“I was raised in Jamaica. My parents, Jasper and Jo Jurgenson were doctors until the late fifties. We settled in Jennings, near Juneau.”
“No, I don’t know.”
“Silly man, Juneau. Juneau, Alaska!”, Jill laughs out loud.
The sound of her guffaw and short snorts bring a glimpse of his past to Jim. He recalls Alaska. His eyes narrowing, Jim continues, “Did your dad run a juke joint in Jennings?”.
“Yes, for a long, long time, Jim. That is where we first met.”

ROCKOLLECTIONS: HOW DO I GET TO CARNEGIE HALL PT.3

We open this one up with a flub.
The ONLY time I can catch a do-over is at the beginning of a show.
Other than that, it would take something unimaginable to stop the show once I am recording it.
My mind was going in different directions, and I ended up drawing a blank, LOL!
I have worked with people who write down beforehand what they are going to say, particularly for an opening.
Not ME!
I like to wing it, much to my own dismay many times, LOL!
Now if I had been live, as I sometimes am, well…AAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
To continue the May 5, 1891 Anniversary of Carnegie Hall, I will start with a guy whose father was even more famous than him. And he is pretty damn famous.
He’ll play a song that has been around longer than he, me and you. I first heard it many years ago in a club/bar on the upper east side of Manhattan, by a guy I don’t even remember.
I feel in love with the song right away- and even the girl I was with! It was that kind of night.
You’ll feel the same way, I am sure.
Moving on, Chicago played the Hall April 5 thru April 10, 1971. And came out with an unprecedented
4-record set I am sure some of you recall. I couldn’t afford it back then!
There were NO 4-disc albums back then, And a LIVE album at that- so a risk for the band.
I will play a lengthy cut called Ballet For A Girl In Buchanan, the final song on the final night.
Incidentally, Engineer Ken went nuts during the playing of this- saying they messed around with a great piece of music, adding something that was not on the original studio version. You should have heard him.
Me? I liked it fine.
I’ll have a little more info about the building.
We will end this one with the first of some of the Rock & Roll Ladies who played Carnegie Hall.
And this one on her 26th birthday!
Meet you in the lobby at intermission.

The Sunday Edition
Psalm 92:1-15
1 It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; 2 to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, 3 to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. 4 For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. 5 How great are your works, O LORD! Your thoughts are very deep! 6 The dullard cannot know, the stupid cannot understand this: 7 though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction for ever, 8 but you, O LORD, are on high for ever. 9 For your enemies, O LORD, for your enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall be scattered. 10 But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil. 11 My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants. 12 The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. 14 In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of sap, 15 showing that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Thoughts and Shadows Day 5

Jim makes his way toward the stage. He’s part walking, part running, avoiding dancers, folks on towels, beach blankets and quilts. Detouring the BBQ pits and charcoal grills, skirting the aroma, his eyes fixed on the stage. As he approaches, the crowd seems to part a little for him. Jim arrives at the stage’s edge. He notices the eyes of the musicians, the approving nods. They all seem to beckon him to join them. Funny thing is, Jim wants to.

Jim feels a small hand reach into his and a downward glance reveals Jenny, asking a question that Jim can’t hear. The band is at the finale of the number that forced him to the stage and the cresendo is deafening. At the fall of the final note, Jenny can be plainly heard by everyone in ear shot, “Are you going to sing now, Jim?” The band mates rush to greet Jim and half drag, half carry him to center stage. Someone places a vintage Martin in his hand. His fingers fret the cool strings and he palms the body, a tap here, a tap there. A strum. Resonance! That’s a term Jim realizes he knows. But how? What am I doing here amidst this sea of folk-soaked listeners? Must be a million folks. Maybe more?

Suddenly, Jim begins to wonder what will he give to this attentive audience. What will he sing? He catches a hand signal from his newest friend, Jenny. She is mouthing the words… “She’ll be coming ’round the mountain…” and Jim begins. The crowd goes nuts! Shocked by the outpouring of support, Jim comes alive on stage. This side to that, out into the crowd. Jim sings verse after verse and the crowd keeps throwing the lines back to him.

Jim thinks to himself, “This is it, this is what I do, this is who I am.” Winding down the song to the thunderous applause and cheers, the bass player leans over and asks, “What about May 15?” Ahhh- someone else knows! Jim will certainly find out more from the bassist, and soon. For now Jim just shouts out, “You bet!

Thursday, Thoughts and Shadows Day 4 At the edge of the tidal marsh, just over the tall dunes, was an airfield and two straight runways. Near the edge of the field, palm trees and picnic tables were set up and decorated with every breakfast item imaginable. Sweet Little Thing is approaching with, presumably, mother in tow. “Jim, how good to see you. Jenny says she found you on the beach?” Before Jim could speak a word, Jenny sat him down beside her and began shoving fruit in his mouth. “She’s quite the mama to the strangers she finds on the beach.” After chewing a while and tasting the melon and thinking for a moment, Jim asked, “Lots of strangers?” Jenny shook her head at her mother as if telling her no with her eyes, “Not yet… too soon.” Behind him, Jim hears that familiar pounding. It’s a bandstand, a stage of some sort. The band is beginning to tune their instruments and Jenny grabs Jim’s hand and off across the way the three run, Jenny leading the way. “The music is about to begin, Jim, can you sing or pick…” Jim thinks, I don’t know if I can sing or not. It is then the questions begin anew. Can I play an instrument? Why am I on an airfield. Where are all the planes? Where are my shoes? Looking down, his feet are bare. There beside them are a new pair of white socks and deck shoes. Jenny inquires, “Did I get the size right, Jimmy?” Slipping his foot into the last shoe, Jim says, “They fit perfectly, Sweety! Thank you!” Jenny blushes and beams at Mom. The band begins to play and the tune immediately grabs Jim and shakes him to his feet. Only 10 days of practice before May 15th. What is that date?

Shadows and Thoughts Day 3.
He spies a kid, how old? Eight? Nine? Who’s watching out for the kid? She must have parents, a brother, maybe? She walks quickly oover to him, almost skipping. “Hey Jim!” Flabbergasted, he asks how she knows him. “Silly man!” Pointing to his shirt, he looks down. Right there. Embroidered for all the world. J-I-M. So, I am Jim, he thinks to himself. The kid asks, “Were you on my plane that crashed?” So there was a crash, he thinks again to himself. “Yes, I guess I was. I think I was.” “First or second from Logan?”, asked the kid. “Logan? Never heard of Logan.” says Jim, getting that confused look in the eyes. Sweet thing is skipping down the beach now singing, “She’ll be comin’ ’round the mountain, when she comes, when she comes…” Then she turns and hollers, “Come on Jim, we have blueberry pancakes and maple syrup!” Jim follows to see where she leads. Then Jim sees it. The date May 15 is becoming clearer to him along with more questions.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: HOW DO I GET TO CARNEGIE HALL? PT.2

We continue now with the legendary and historic Christmas Eve 1955 Concert At Carnegie Hall by the Weavers.
A concert and album considered so remarkable at the time, the liner notes were written by no less than famous poet and Abraham Lincoln biographer, Carl Sandburg.
We’ll hear Kisses Sweeter Than Wine, Greensleeves (and if you have ever wondered, there are lyrics, but as Pete Seeger says, they are terrible- all 40 verses!).
Next, Sixteen Tons, Wimoweh (which we all know from the Tokens’ Lion Sleeps Tonight) and lastly The Rock Island Line.
Now, Pete Seeger returned solo to Carnegie Hall in June 1963.
As he has done all his career, he sings some songs by an up and coming new young songwriter.
Who do you think he would be talking about in 1963?
We will play two, and I will tell you who it is not.
It is NOT Bob Dylan!
Finally, we’ll end this chapter with a song everybody knows, but maybe not that it was written by Seeger.
This one is a Folkie’s Delight!
Incidentally, I assure you, I researched and chose only songs to play that were in fact, truly sung and recorded at Carnegie Hall for this entire series.
I hope you’ll listen through our 116th Anniversary Celebration.
And I’ll save a seat for you!

Tuesday. Shadows and Thoughts. He had walked and counted stopping back at ten thousand. Counted again to that magic number. if there is or ever was any magic. Now. It’s a terrible feeling of loneliness. Who is Elvis and why would he pop into my thoughts. here alone, walking this white shore? The pounding rhythm has returned. It’s internal It must be. The plane crash! Had it really happened or was it a dream? Where are my shoes? Forced to try to imagine happier times he can think of none, save one, a place called Mudtown - he was happy there. Why that name? Is someone making this up or pretending to be with me on this journey? Where are you? I know someone is waiting for word from me. What is the word? Better to not wait. No. Don’t wait for me. Where are you? Where was I? What about May 15. Daily, we inch closer, coming ever closer, but why? Why that date? Someone has an answer! What do you think? Tell me!
