Thursday is the day we think of when we think of Christmas Eve. A great day, but not like the day following. Still it’s 24 hours to do with as we will. I suggest a marathon listening time and Longtown Sound is a perfect tool to utilize to cut that worldly edge right out of the pschye. Whether at the zoo or park with an iPod or mp3 player or tooling around in the ‘Vette, it’s all good!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JOHNNY CARSON LEAVES TONIGHT SHOW PT.3

Rockollections - Tonight 3
Alright, I took some time off for the Memorial Day Weekend.
In these final two chapters, you will hear more Johnny Carson.
In 1972 the Tonight Show moved from New York to Hollywood permanently- and that move was seriously questioned.
Since we played a show opening from New York, this time we will have one from Burbank- and right into some monologues. Just HOW hot was it?
There were times when Carson was never funnier than when a joke bombed.
He could be charming with celebrities as well as ordinary people.
Some examples, The Nut Lady and Pancho The Singing Bird.
Not sure how ordinary they are, now that I think about it!
Johnny Carson had over 22,000 guests on the Tonight Show, and at one time he accounted for 17% of NBC’s revenues.
Some routines never get old, as we shall hear with Johnny playing Ronald Reagan- think Abbott & Costello!
All of this intermingled with our music.
Including a song I’ll bet you never knew existed, actually TITLED Johnny Carson!
We will go out of this episode with an on-air call to Carson from Steve Allen, one of my heroes.
It is very funny, and listen for the mad bedlam that was a staple of Steve’s show, when Johnny catches on.
SMOCK, SMOCK!!!
Coming up next time, the Goodbye.

Psalm 29:1-11
1 Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name; worship the LORD in holy splendor.
3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over mighty waters.
4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the LORD causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king for ever.
11 May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace!

Friday is here, the weekend follows. Lots to do and see so get on it, doggone it! Honoring the military for the sacrifices made is the least we can do. These days it’s old fashioned to take part in festivities, but wait, I am old fashioned. That should be the new fashion. “Come together, right now, over me.” That quote from Lennon/McCartney takes on a whole new meaning when applied to this Memorial Day. ROCKOLLECTIONS: JOHNNY CARSON LEAVES TONIGHT SHOW PT.2

As stated, May 22 was the anniversary of the night
Johnny Carson left the Tonight Show. And you may have noticed a certain trend of “Tonight” songs. We will continue that, double it, and even triple it!
First up, a real pretty one from Sara Evans.
I’ll have a little Carson biography for you, leading right into Karnac The Magnificent.
I will confess one my own personal quirks about opening envelopes.
A little more bio. And my opinion that Johnny Carson was not a big fan of Rock & Roll, he was a fan of the big band era, and if I am not mistaken a drummer.
Of all the late night hosts, he was the last to come around to our music.
It occurred to me, that for younger listeners or perhaps those from another country not familiar with the show, I am trying to “Teach You Tonight”. Ha!
Any Dion fans out there- Dion from BELMONT AVENUE IN THE BRONX, NEW YORK that is- here is an alert.
We will have much much more fun to come.
Dah dah dah dum dum…!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JOHNNY CARSON LEAVES TONIGHT SHOW PT.1

A couple of weeks ago, I was at the radio station and I noticed that May 22 was the day Johnny Carson retired from the Tonight Show after almost 30 years as the late night host.
And the light bulb went on. I canceled the show I had planned.
The challenge was, how do you do a Rock & Roll show, even a free-form one, about Johnny Carson leaving?
These next four episodes will answer the question as to whether I was successful or not.
First off, how many years ago do you think he quit?
I will start the show off predictably enough, no surprise there- but then…!
Among other things, you will hear a song I played back when Johnny Carson died a few years ago, by of all people, Annette Funicello. I probably got the greatest response to anything I have ever played.
It is called It’s Really Love, but if you listen to the music it is the Tonight Show Theme!
I point this out because it could easily be missed if I don’t tell people beforehand. So listen carefully to the music (man, I usually say listen to the WORDS, LOL).
This is the only version I have ever been able to find. By Annette Funicello!!!
If we are dealing with the end of Carson’s successful reign, we should start at the beginning.
So we will hear the 1st words EVER spoken on the 1st night he took over, Oct. 1, 1962.
And check out that amazing guest list.
Many people have forgotten, or never knew, that the Tonight Show back then, and for Steve Allen and Jack Paar previously, was one hour and 45 minutes long.
The 11 o’clock newscasts were only 15 minutes long, and here in New York City we got to see the first, extra, opening 15 minutes before the show was picked up nationally for the next 90 minutes.
Ah well, let’s get started- HEEEEEEERE’S Johnny…!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: HOW DO I GET TO CARNEGIE HALL PT.6 CONCLUSION

Did you know Bill Withers played Carnegie Hall?
Well he did. And you’ll hear him.
I have some interesting trivia and folklore for this final episode of our celebration of the 116th Anniversary Of The Opening Of Carnegie Hall.
I am going to complete two circles here.
As was the first concert we heard in this series, I am going to take you back to another legendary one from the 1950’s.
The 2nd song I will play from this concert is a very catchy tune that I hadn’t heard in years- until I was putting this series together.
As a result, for days I couldn’t get the damn song out of my head, lol!
This from a man who, although I always liked his music, I feel should ONLY sing, never talk!
The other full circle is that way back when we started this whole Carnegie Hall extravaganza, I played songs about the Act/Art Of Performance.
Well, the concert is over. The roadies are doing their thing.
Let’s bring in Jackson Browne to sing about that.
As always, I hope you enjoyed this look at this famed old building.
Next up, a series you will not believe- and a challenge for me too.

2 your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.
3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.
4 More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters, more majestic than the waves of the sea, majestic on high is the LORD!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: HOW DO I GET TO CARNEGIE HALL PT.5

Gonna start off with an ego attack.
A guy named David W. Torrence, who does a show called P.O.V. (Point Of View), had some very nice things to say about this Cardboard & Glue Production called Rockollections.
I thank him, and you will hear his short quotes at the beginning.
This is the next to last episode as we return to Carnegie Hall for its 116th Birthday.
Not all who have played the Hall have been primarily known as musicians.
So, with an introduction by Dick Cavett, the one…the only…GROUCHO!
Dedicated to JR Claiborn of The Garage- he’ll know why.
Then one of the truly great nights there, the All Star Tribute To Harry Chapin. And the centerpiece of this chapter.
On what would have been his 45th birthday, Dec. 7, 1987, he was posthumously awarded the Special Congressional Gold Medal.
No one has ever had a bad word to say about Harry Chapin, and more than once regarding his charitable giving and playing concerts, I have heard his almost motto, “I play one night for me and one for the other guy”.
From that glorious night, we’ll hear Graham Nash, Judy Collins and Bruce Springsteen.
Pay attention to Bruce’s heartfelt words. And there really WAS a time when the music brought us all together.
It has gone.
But I try to capture some of that, give us all a little taste of what that was like, right here in these Rockollections Podcasts.
Finally, because everything today is computerized, I had time to kill before the break (which MUST be taken at the specified time…OOOOH). Not enough time left to play a whole song.
I used to hate it when Engineer Ken would tell me this. It stops the flow and I am left there to my own devices to fill as many as 2 minutes of dead air.
After almost 9 years it doesn’t bother me as much, and I’ll leave it up to you whether I was reaching for a life preserver, LOL!
One more to go for the Grand Finale.

It is past time to wrap up our Mothers Day shows.
This final chapter will have a song for another group of Mothers (I think, let me know what you think!).
Then a couple of Mothers songs that didn’t fit into any category- so I invented one.
Then we conclude with the serious but honest part of this series, the inevitable end that comes to us all.
And Mothers, angels that they be, are not exempt.
If Mom is still in your life, cherish her and let her know you love her.
She will be so grateful to hear it, you will feel terrific after saying it.
Please don’t wait until it is chiseled in stone- let her know NOW!!!
As for me, I’ll meet you back at Carnegie Hall.

Thoughts and Shadows - Finale

Jill did a double take when she turned to catch Jim’s expression. For, when she faced him she saw a man fast asleep. “Oh, well, there is a time for everything.” heading toward the door, in walks Jenny. “Did you tell him?” “Does he know?” “Is he okay?” Jenny seemed ready to explode. “No, we talked a bit and he recalls a little, but let Jim rest. He has a big day ahead of him tomorrow, honey.” Jenny places her tiny hand on Jim’s.

Inside Jim’s brain, the dream begins again. He’s in the cockpit and taking enemy fire. The smoke and haze are real, though enhanced by the mind’s twilight staged purple-dipped recollection. Then it was over. Jim has managed to make it to shore, but what shore? Jim jerks to full alert, scanning the room. He eyes Jenny, at his feet, then Jill. He sputters “Jill, are you my wife.” Jim continues, “I think I know these things, yet, you seem different somehow, but so familiar.” Jill, looks down to Jenny as she tells Jim, “Yes, I am your wife and the child at your feet is our daughter.”

Jim gets that puzzled look again. This time the question is directed to Jenny. “What year were you born?” Jill interrupts. Do you recall the last time we spoke, do you remember, Jim?” Jim scratches his ear, still thinking, he says, “Well, I dream about Desert Storm so it must have been after that, right? I don’t know, help me figure this out, please.”

Jill sits down by Jenny and holds her close. “Jim, what I am going to tell you is hard but, just listen. I was flying on Sept 11, 2001. We had a terrible crash and many lives were lost. Including our unborn daughter, Jenny. Remember, I called you that morning from Boston with the news that we were expecting a baby. You and I were so happy. I was coming to join you, Poppa and Mama on the road with the band. But it wasn’t to be.”

Jim is baffled, asking, “But how? How is this possible. This. Where we are. What are we doing here? If you’re no longer alive, am I dead? Who is this, my daughter? What’s going on, Jill?”

Jill starts but Jenny decides to take over. “Daddy, I love you so much so I asked God if I could help Him, since I didn’t have a father here. God told me when you were coming so I could meet you. If Mama looks a little different it’s because you are seeing her through my eyes and I am seeing you for the first time as my father. You know that tomorrow is May 15th, right, Daddy?”

Jim supposes, “Right. May 15. I kept that date in my memory for all time. What is that date, Jenny?”

Jenny grins and blurts, “It’s my birthday celebration, Daddy! All of Mama’s friends here are coming, all your friends here are coming and your daddy, Grandpa Hal is coming. Moses says half of Heaven is turning out for the party. He’s so funny!”

Jim asks, “Moses?”

“Sure, Daddy. It’s a rule here that every party must have a Jewish comedian. I wanted Buddy Hackett, but he’s booked with the Danny Thomas Roast!”

Jim stands and lifts his girls to their feet. Jim, holding Jenny and Jill tightly. The family, reunited, hugs midst the laughter and giggles.

All is right out of this world.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MOTHERS, MA’S, MOMS AND MAMAS PT.3

Before retiring for the night, I am putting this next Mothers Podcast up.
This time, the musical topics include a major requirement to BE a Mother, a song that was a pop hit but in the process lost some of its intended menace, a fun tune aimed at a group of Mothers that are always the butt of jokes, and a batch of songs from singing Mothers to their offspring.
There are other songs too, and the guests in this chapter feature a return of the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, Melanie, Randy Newman, Laura Nyro and more.
Here’s hoping all the Moms had the happiest and best Mothers Day ever- just as they deserve!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MOTHERS, MA’S, MOMS AND MAMAS PT.2

Moving very quickly on, for Mothers Day, this chapter deals with Good Mothers and Bad Mothers.
We all know about Good ones, those are the one WE have!
But some Mothers do strange things for whatever reasons. Sometimes perhaps out of fear of losing their little Johnny or Mary to adulthood.
To ignore that would be untruthful. We will not ignore it. We didn’t for Fathers. So it’s Mothers, warts and all.
We will end this chapter with a GREAT Mothers song.
Our invited guests include Pink Floyd, Chuck Berry, Shirelles, Janis Ian, Smokey & Miracles, The Who and more!

Proverbs 31:10-12 and 25-31
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MOTHERS, MA’S, MOMS AND MAMAS PT.1

Happy Mothers Day!!!
Here is the first of some Podcasts I did a last-minute number on from Studio M- it’s been a long time since I put any together out of my apartment.
Dedicated to Mothers Day.
I cannot emphasize enough, how this would not have been possible to do without the technical assistance of my main man, Uncle Shag.
His keen knowledge and steady patience with me opened up a whole new world for me to do these Pods from home.
If I wasn’t before, I am now a confirmed Unckee!
Hey, hey, we’re the Unckees…LOL!
The man should get himself a radio show. He should be on EVERY day.
Oh wait…he IS!!!
The Longtown Sound.
Hey Unc, ditch the phoney southern accent and you’re as good as gold, LOL!
Let’s get this show on the road with the likes of Steppenwolf, John Lennon, Elvis, The Band and many many others, as I take my own particular musical look at Mothers, Ma’s, Moms & Mamas.
This opening chapter, as will the others to follow, will be a lot of fun and longer than usual.
If you like my Theme shows, you enjoy this.

Longtown Sound 71

Saturday came in with the Grandbaby awake before the house was on full alert. This means trouble, usually. Six year olds are so cute! Especially when dialing 911 for no reason. Again, awfully precocious when the 911 operator calls back three times and Grandbaby yells, “I told you to quit calling me!” Finally awakened, Grandma gets on the phone, receiving an earful from the dispatcher, which leads to an earful for Grandbaby and by no small accident, the rest of the Shag abode. Yep, Good Morning and Good Night to all! Happy Tunage for a (Grand) Mother’s Saturday!
