It’s been a warped Wedneday. A Warren Zevon Waffle Wednesday. Where? Oh, where are the flapjacks, you demand! Warren was a waffleman. RIP, Warren. All across the land in a waffle pattern he traversed. Why, Wednesday wrings wisdom with white waves whistling weary write-ups while wreaking willing wreckage within walls weathered with wrinkles. ROCKOLLECTIONS: KITES, MODERN DYLAN & ONE FOR ANGEL!

Today is Kite Flying Day!
So, for that, an old song from 1967 and the beginnings of FM free-form radio. I can distinctly remember Scott Muni and Allison Steele playing this one on WNEW-FM.
And while there were groups that did go off on long instrumental solos, back in those days there was still the feeling with music people and audience that you had to be able to sing- have some harmony too.
While it may seem a little dated with its somewhat mellow harmonies, this group could sing!
Then it is back to Dylan’s latest.
Workingman’s Blues #2, is an odd title for such a pretty song with great lyrics.
Then one with a 1930-40’s feel to it, and my friend Lou Miano correctly linked it to Red Sails In The Sunset.
On to the terrific The Levee’s Gonna Break, and naturally you cannot but think of Hurricane Katrina.
Lastly, listening to this new album, I quiet accidentally came across a song that approaches SOME what I was feeling, through and after, the death of my ex-girlfriend.
It is Dylan at his finest, and the lyrics will be posted in the Comments section.
Angel Murphy died on Valentine’s Day- maybe fitting, certainly ironic for one you love. She was only 46, and leaves a beautiful daughter, and a wonderful family of mother, 2 brothers, sister, brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
I could try to describe her, and her tremendous strength and courage in a losing battle.
But maybe the simplest description is the best- she was a Good Woman!
And all who knew her were the better for it.
I remember before and after playing this song, I was hanging on by a thread- you can hear it in my voice.
For all the normalcy that has returned to my life, I KNOW I am not over this loss.
This was a tough one- with all I saw, heard and felt.
And for every one of my visits and stays in Pennsylvania, I wanted, and wanted her to know, that I would be with her When The Deal Goes Down!
This episode begins with fun and ends with sadness.
Sorry, but a lot like life.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: “BROWN/STONES BORROWING” & MODERN DYLAN

ROCKOLLECTIONS:
I am going to open this one with a couple of songs that came to mind several years ago, during an ad campaign here in Brooklyn by the old Buster Brown Shoe Company.
As we all know, George Harrison got himself into trouble with his My Sweet Lord supposedly taken from the Chiffons’ He’s So Fine.
Well, give a listen to the Rolling Stones taking things note-for-note from an old song by a guy named yes…Buster Brown!
Then it’s on to the latest album by Bob Dylan, Modern Times.
I’ll be playing selected cuts from this critically acclaimed album- and it is terrific!
A few guys like Dylan seem to be rocking harder than ever as they get older- Leonard Cohen comes to mind.
And at 65, Bob Dylan is the OLDEST living person to EVER have an album enter the charts at # 1.
We’ll have some rockers that set the tone, beginning with the opening track, and even a jazzy, crooning Dylan (huh?).
More to follow.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 131ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE CALL PT.4 & FINAL

Here is the last chapter in our series commemorating the 131st Anniversary of the first call made on the Telephone.
We are at the point where Alexander Graham Bell exhibits his invention to the world. Naturally Big Business enters the picture in the form of Western Union and tries to take it away. It was the first of many legal challenges, all of which Bell won.He was barely into his 30’s when he had his success, never stopped coming up with new, helpful inventions and when he finally died in 1922, ALL phones around our nation stopped for a silent minute.Among the topics we will cover musically are my pet peeve, that bane of mankind, the Cell Phone; the OPPOSITE of that with a Private Conversation, by someone who has been surprising me with how good he is; a very short phone song by Lou Reed from my neck of the woods; an oldie that will have those memory cells jumping, advising not to do what usually happens to me, lol; at least the 2nd most famous, and another contender for most famous rock & roll phone call. And to close it all out, simply the best reason you could ever have to make a telephone call.Hope you enjoyed your time on the Phone!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 131ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE CALL PT.3

Moving along with our Telephone adventure, I will go off on my discourse about how there are time limits regarding how late you can call people, depending on how good a friend they are.
And I will play a couple of songs relating to just that discourse.
We’ll have some more info about Alexander Graham Bell- did you know Helen Keller dedicated her autobiography to him?
Next I will tackle another telephone gripe with a long set of music on the subject of…OPERATORS.
And we’ll finish this chapter off with the story of that 1st historic phone call.
For a long time now I have said there is a way to present music in an intelligent fashion, unfortunately it is not IN fashion.
But sometimes playing song A followed by song B (and maybe C, D, and E), you can give them both or all greater meaning. That is what is attempted and intended here.
Get on the bus with me, and I will take you somewhere!
It calls for conscious listening, not background music. What I play is not wallpaper, nor will I ever be just a jukebox playing unrelated songs. This is not for everyone- either hate it or love it, it is not mediocre. That said, naturally I relish people who do get it, and enjoy it.

I LOVE it when people anticipate what I will play next, or scold me for NOT playing a particular song they feel should have belonged in there.

I usually have a reason, maybe time is a factor, or I simply don’t have the song- but occasionally they come up with something I hadn’t thought of, and I take great pleasure in the chastisement, lol!

Here’s hoping you are among the best and brightest who favorably regard my creative attempts!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 131ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE CALL PT.2

I’ll open this one with a couple of ID’s I owe you from our last meeting. Moving on with our story of Alexander Graham Bell, we find he was a child prodigy, and also that had he not mistranslated some German, he may not have continued his experiments and so enthusiastically pursued the telephone.

This episode will include some songs whose titles are phone numbers; Woody Allen; a phone annoyance (with much more of those upcoming); a song entitled Alexander Graham Bell that I was informed of by my British buddies Kaz & Shaz; as well as the Electric Light Orchestra; Joe Tex, and me saying something I maybe shouldn’t have, lol. Ah, screw ‘em!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: 131ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELEPHONE CALL PT.1

Mike Pell's Rockollection

Today, March 10th, is the 131st Anniversary Of The First Telephone Call- from Alexander Graham Bell to his assistant, Mr. Watson.
These shows are from last year on March 7th, when I noted the 1876 granting of the patent for the telephone to Bell- perhaps the world’s greatest invention.
That is why you will hear references to March 7th & the 130th.
All the communications we have today, including these computers, can be directly traced back to the telephone.
So, the first of 4 episodes commemorating that day in history with all Telephone Songs- from all over the gamut of Rock.
I will begin the fascinating story of Alexander Graham Bell.
And this Part One will include the most famous telephone call in rock & roll history; maybe the 2nd most obscure Beatles song, as it was only the flip side of a single and never on an album; a phone call to the Spirit World; a warning about the horror of losing a phone number; and the ORIGINAL version of another famous musical phone call.
These shows are as good as anything I have ever done.
Just don’t hang up on me!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2006 PT.8

This is the one that wraps it all up (maybe!).
Remembering and celebrating those that we said goodbye to in 2006.
We had to hurry with this one as time was a factor.
Opening up, we have Ed Bradley, correspondent for 60 Minutes- and some records just choose themselves.
On to Little Miss Rhythm, as Ruth Brown was known in R&B in pre-rock & roll days. And a song that is a harbinger of the musical revolution that was inevitably coming.
The great director Robert Altman died last year- famous for letting his actors just improvise around a general outline. There is a great story about his son and a song he co-wrote for one of Altman’s movies. I’ll play the song.
And another director is next, Perry Henzell. He made the FIRST full length movie to come out of the islands, The Harder They Fall.
A quick nod to Mike Evans of the TV show the Jeffersons.
Then Ahmet Ertegun, the FOUNDER of Atlantic Records and all the great music that came from that label. For him, another early 50’s song from Atlantic by Big Joe Turner that I consider one of the best EVER. And one that blows Bill Haley & The Comets away! I gotta play them back to back some day and show how Haley’s had the lyrics changed to take away all the sexual references.
The WHOLE SONG is about SEX!
Finally, we’ll go out with James Brown, who died this past Christmas Day. I’ll play the opening portion of the famous, legendary, must-have album that dates back to 1963- Live At The Apollo.
And thus ends our annual Tribute/Memorial and in some cases at least one more play, for some people who touched our lives. They have nothing left to give, and we honor them.
Maybe not the last chapter though.
Who knows, I may get lazy or not have an idea later in the year, and do another show with the MANY leftovers we were forced to leave out.
To all who are gone, rest in peace.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL PT.7

As we begin the home stretch, I’ll open with a song I KNOW you know- by Barbara George.
In 2006, we lost Knack drummer Bruce Gary. Now the Knack are kinda teased and laughed at, but you will be amazed at the impressive list of artists this guy played with. He was a lot better than people thought!
Next, we have Prentiss Barnes, bass singer with the old Moonglows and responsible for one of the most memorable beginnings of a song in Rock & Roll history!
I’ll play that, and though the Moonglows are known for their classic ballads, I’ll also play an uptempo song I first heard around 1970-71, as it was already a moldy oldie, but I flipped over it. Also note the obligatory sax solo of that era.
Then it is on to Freddie Fender, a guy who went through an awful lot of transplants and illness for years, still performing until something, as it will for us all, got to him.
Next an instrumental that was a HUGE hit in the U.S. and around the world in 1968, right during the age of psychedelia and all sorts of wonderful musical experimentation and expansion.
A tribute to that time of openness to all kinds of music, that Paul Mauriat could have a # 1 SMASH!
Finally, and one helluva weird segue from Mauriat, we remember Sandy West, another drummer, and with Joan Jett a founding member of the pioneering all-girl rock group the Runaways.
Some great music here, and from all over the musical map!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2006 PT.6

Moving along the calendar for those we lost in 2006, and we now celebrate.

We open with a remembrance of a DOG- Eddie, from the TV show Frasier. And a song that just jumped out and BIT me when I heard about his death!
Then it is on to Johnny Jenkins, a guitarist who played behind Otis Redding and influenced Jimi Hendrix.
After that, a VERY interesting man named Willie Denson who wrote a number of hits for the Shirelles- but that is only part of the story.
Syd Barrett moved on last year, a founder of Pink Floyd, but only played on their earliest material. So we will hear some of that, as well a POSSIBLE recording with the Beatles!
Then the saxophonist, Danny Flores. He is the driving force for a Rock & Roll Classic I will not give away here. You’ll have to listen!
We will close this chapter with one my favorites- Arthur Lee- only 61 and the leader of one the very best and most underappreciated bands of the 60’s, Love.
Two more episodes to go.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2006 PT.5

This time the roster of those who departed in 2006 includes Desmond Dekker. His reggae hit The Israelites came in the late 60’s before anyone had ever heard of Bob Marley.
Vince Welnick of the Grateful Dead died at only 51- and Grateful Dead keyboardists have become the equivalent of drummers in Spinal Tap!
The great Billy Preston left us last June- the only man to receive billing on a Beatles’ single (Beatles top, Billy second billing, unlike with Tony Sheridan).
A couple of TV and radio newsmen will be noted- Bill Beutel and Christopher Glenn- with a song by a guy I am really getting into, Jack Johnson.
Then Claydes Charles Smith, lead guitarist and writer with Kool & The Gang. In fact, he wrote the song I’ll play.
Closing this chapter, a song produced by the legendary Arif Mardin- and a real good one.
