ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2006 PT.4

Moving on with our non-morbid look back at those who departed in 2006, we have Daniel McKenna- the guitarist for what I always thought was a guy not a group, Toby Beau.

Then someone maybe not too well known here, Grant McLennan, from the Go-Betweens, and a song declared one of the 10 TEN BEST songs from Australia.

Lew Anderson died- the last Clarabell the Clown, and the one who spoke on the final Howdy Doody show.

And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, we’ll remember TWO people vitally important to the memorable Jaws.

Music for dead clowns and movies? YES!

We will end this episode with Johnny Wilder- late and late of the R&B band, Heatwave.

More to come.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2006 PT.3

As we continue our remembrance of those departed in 2006, this episode features the great Buck Owens- including a duet with Ringo Starr.
We’ll note Eugene Landy, the psychotherapist to Brian Wilson, and June Pointer of the Pointer Sisters- only 52 years old when she died.
And for Phil Walden, the founder of the esteemed Capricorn Records, we’ll hear a great song from a group he signed that hardly ever gets played anymore.
We are only into April of last year.
So we’ll have lots more.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2006 PT.2

Continuing with those we lost in 2006- and not only Rock & Rollers.
In fact, we will open with actors Anthony Franciosa and Chris Penn, and later also include Grandpa Al Lewis and actress Moira Shearer.
Even comedian Don Knotts will be remembered.
Plus singer Gene McFadden of McFadden & Whitehead.
Now just what will I play for these people?
Only one way to find out.

Mondays are all the same. Or, are they? Getting over or at the things you did or should have done then and you realize that there is no catching up. Better to prioritize and throw out that which you’ll never accomplish. That is approximately 95% of the items. That done, you have time to listen to 30 minutes and 45 seconds of great indie tunage!
Enjoy!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL 2006 PT.1

Well, I have returned to Brooklyn, and this Rockollections Podcast should get back to a state of normalcy after a sad couple of months that ended, maybe rightly so, on Valentine’s Day, with the loss of a loved one.
And ironically, here is the first in a long series, acknowledging those we lost- rockers and other pop/cultural figures- in 2006.
This is something I have been doing for the last 7 years, and see no reason to stop now. And there will be touches of humor.
This is a Tribute/Memorial, not a wake, celebrating those who have touched us and brought us joy. We owe them at least some recognition of that fact- for they can give no more than they have.
This episode will have 3 beginnings.
First, what has become a traditional playing of a song written by Graham Nash after hearing of George Harrison’s death on the radio. It works for all in this series.
Second, it occurred to me that Feb.3 was the 48th anniversary of rock & roll’s first tragedy, and day the music died, in which multiple losses resulted in the plane crash involving Richie Valens, the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly.
So, a remembrance of Buddy, not to slight the others, including a tape I’ve had of something you likely have never heard before- an appearance by Buddy on a local here TV show with DJ Alan Freed. An eery conversation in which they JOKE about the scary, rocky plane trips they had taken together on tours. Buddy even mentions a helicopter crash.
And finally, the beginning of our journey remembering those who passed on in 2006.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR VALENTINES - ALL HEART SONGS (EXCEPT ONE) PT.2

Continuing on with our Valentine “HEART” songs.
And the ‘EXCEPT ONE”! We will have lots more interesting trivia about the day, and answer the question: What group of people gets the MOST Valentine cards? We’ll hear one of my favorite songs EVER, and why, from Kate and Anna McGarrigle- Heart Like A Wheel. In fact, a lot of the ladies this time, with Stevie Nicks, Billie Holiday. Another appearance by Buddy Holly. And finally that song without “HEART” in the title from  Juliet Turner, but is VERY much about the heart! This one and the McGarrigle’s song really get to me. And as always, there was a ton of songs left off the show, leading me to believe there will be an equally good sequel down the road- probably in the Spring. I hope you get a kick out of my HEARTfelt effort to bring some taste and
unpredictability to the radio.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Monday’s here, no going back since we have come this far. The well is still dry no matter how many rocks are dropped trying to catch the sound of a water plop. What is that sound called exactly? Hmmm…Google time! Hey, if there is someone you can drop a line to, someone that may have done something or wrote something that didn’t sit right…that person could have been CLOWNING around and didn’t realize how their words impacted. Tell ‘em it’s okay. Take off the big, floppy shoes and sit a spell.

ROCKOLLECTIONS: FOR VALENTINE’S- ALL HEART SONGS (EXCEPT ONE) PT.1

This is a good one, I promise. From beginning to end, with all the surprises, songs you know, songs you have never heard, or haven’t heard in a long time, and scholarly yet fun approach I try to squeeze into slightly less than an hour. Including a set in Part Two that is intended to rip your OWN heart out!

With, in this episode, Herman’s Hermits, Buddy Holly, Lucy Kaplansky, a GREAT song from the McGarrigle Sisters, Jackson Browne and even Frankie Avalon.

But first, we must see if there is a heartbeat!
