Late suppers of Pancakes are common across the nation. Ask any IHOP employee! The syrup and hot coffee mix well with the bacon and sausage and hot grits. Especially if SNOW is in the forecast. Stay warm and full! Top that great supper off with the music in this Longtown Sound.
Wednesday waits for willin’ ears with waffleless tunage!

Well, sleep seems out of the question, so here is Part Two and conclusion of Gene Pitney.
We will start with a song that at the beginning always reminds me of Down In The Boondocks. See what you think.
We’ll talk about Pitney’s Rolling Stones connection, his influence on DAVID BOWIE (particularly on Changes) and play songs you may have forgot existed.
One that hits home for me on this unsettled night is I’m Gonna Be Strong.
Also one called Just One Smile, that I think I remember being done by someone else, but can’t put my finger on it. If you know, please write me here. It’s a real pretty sound that oddly co-existed with all the psychedelia of 1967. Probably why I love that year so much- anything was acceptable.
He died of natural causes at the age of 66. A little young for those natural causes if you ask me.
We will go out with an unreleased Rolling Stones track from 1964, where he purportedly plays the piano, and Phil Spector is in on the session too. Some real nice jamming!
And another Stones connection is he had a fling with Marianne Faithfull. Way to go my man Gene!!!

Well, I think I’ll keep you guessing on this one, although there is a huge clue in the title of the episode.
This time we will feature an artist who:
Was a master of teenage romantic angst;
Along with Roy Orbison brought orchestral pop into Rock & Roll;
Was one of the era’s best songwriters, with Hello Mary Lou, He’s A Rebel, Rubber Ball, etc.;
Was an early proponent of “countrypolitan” music;
Was among the first to introduce Eastern elements into pop, well before the Beatles;
Was one of the first to record Jagger/Richards & Randy Newman compositions;
Was an early protege of Phil Spector;
Produced and played all the instruments and voices on his debut hit single;
Played the maracas on the Rolling Stones version of Not Fade Away;
Sang the title song for two classic movies;
Was the first teen idol to perform at the Oscars;
Had a song he SANG prevented from reaching # 1 on charts by a song he WROTE;
Was deservedly inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002.
Figured it out?
PLAY the answer!
Oh, and I finally confused the radio with the podcast. Listen at the break, as I say “Rockollections” instead of “Rock Lives” (hate that name!)

To borrow from my pal Uncle Shag, this one comes from the shores of the Susquehanna River.
Going to start off with a couple from Eric Andersen’s 1968 Tin Can Alley LP- Honey (no, not that one) and Mary Sunshine (that sounds like a 60’s title, doesn’t it?).
We will discover that at the height of his career after the Blue River album, because of record company internal bickering, the next album was “lost”. Gotta love those record companies- although for the life of me, I can’t think of a reason WHY!
After something called 16 Year Grudge (well within my range), I will go out on a limb.
I will play my FAVORITE Eric Andersen song of all time, Violets Of Dawn. And it is true poetry.
I will also give, for at least the chorus, MY INTERPRETATION of this, one of the most beautiful songs I will ever play for you. Now there’s a way to make a fool of yourself- since it has been such a personal song to me for so many years!
Dedicated to that sweet lady I love in Pennsylvania.
At the end of the song, that dark cloud that hangs over everything lately will extend to a struggle to keep a quivering voice from breaking entirely. I try to bring a certain professionalism to this Rockollections. You’ll hear it, but I fought it and think I won.
We’ll then hear Hello Sun- a fitting song after Violets Of Dawn.
And go out with an unusual, acoustic version of That’s Alright Mama.
Although I say I will continue with more Eric, and did another show of him on the radio, I do believe this is the final part I will be uploading here.
I thank you for putting up with my indulging myself, and playing one of my favorites.
Hope you found some beauty in his music. For that was the key intent!

Sorry the Pods are coming so erratic, but I have hinted enough as to why.
We’ll George Harrison Ding Dong Ding Dong our way into this one.
Then return to the featured Eric Andersen.
Beginning with Tin Can Alley Pts. 1 & 2- one of the BEST songs you will ever hear on the subject of Poverty. From 1968, Eric is poetically in peak form here!
Then a few more from the classic Blue River album.
Faithful- with it’s odd reasoning, I wasn’t always faithful, but I was always true.
More Often Than Not- sad but dripping with sarcasm, here’s to all the ladies I am NOT with tonight (pass that damn bottle).
‘Round The Next Bend- a song containing such desperation, and with no one left to turn to, he cries out “Jesus help me, or send a friend who’s been there, and made it ’round the next bend…”
I know where he is coming from!
Meet you back here when I get around that next bend.

I asked my friend, Mike Pell, the other day about basic truths. Foundational stuff. Basic subjects: optimism, gratitude, hope and spirituality came to mind. Are these building blocks now being applied in a new way? Shoot, I could’ve told them that. My daddy and mama could have been professors in the subject. It’s almost like the academic world has caught on to something ‘new’ and they’re running with it. Hah!

Longtown Podcast - Vol. 330 Caitlin Cary Harry Chapin JCS Project Spanky and Our Gang Draz
The Longtown Sound
My favorite day of the week is Sunday. I remember, as a kid, if the weather was fair, walking a quarter mile to the country church with my siblings and my Mother. Right there on the side of the country road in the sometimes too-tall fescue, red clay, gravel and tar. If it rained, Mrs. Taylor, or another member going our way would carry us. My Dad was working and couldn’t come to Sunday School with us. He was always there for the sermon though. That was a guarantee. You see, he was the preacher. “Daddy” pastored two churches 13 miles apart and for 14 and a half years, I had two church homes. I was and still am what folks call “blessed”. I had two parents, one male and one female. We had a large family and were country folks, reared, certainly knowing about all aspects of the world, but no first hand taste of society or city life. All I knew was what my brain could absorb from books and where my legs carried me, I went. Where I went, I observed and learned. What I have seen and heard has shaped me to be the person I am today. Same as you, I suppose, dear reader. So these days, in the words of another preacher I know today, when asked the question, “How are you?” He always replies and I have begun answering, “Blessed and grateful!”. Today’s Sunday tunage is a hodgepodge of a few of my favorite Indie and Classic “Sunday” songs. Enjoy your Sunday!

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ERIC ANDERSEN & AULD LANG SYNE

Well, I am back for a while, but will be returning to my Angel, who is very ill.
Continuing with singer/songwriter poet Eric Andersen, who was discovered by Tom Paxton. So I guess that calls for him to do a Tom Paxton song- and we’ll hear one.
He became a member of that literate Greenwich Village circle that put out so many great songs.
From the 1966 ‘Bout Changes And Things we’ll hear I Shall Go Unbounded, as the idea of freedom was as much a part of the folk scene then as now.
Have you ever bought an album just on the strength of just ONE song you happened to like? Sure you have!
Well, here is why I bought his great 1972 LP Blue River. Over the years I have come to appreciate all the other songs, but Is It Really Love At All is, in my opinion, the FINEST song about the loneliness of the single’s bar life I have ever heard!
Please do listen to the lyrics.
We will be continuing I think with a lot more Eric Andersen, but will end this episode with a brand new version of Auld Lang Syne by a guy who has been around for a long time.
Under the circumstances, this one was a tough one for me- and you can hear my voice crack at the end. Again, I raise a toast To Your Health and a Happy New Year!
