ROCKOLLECTIONS: A COUPLE OF SONGS OF THE SEASON & ERIC ANDERSEN (WHO?)

I will begin this episode with a song that for years has fallen through the cracks because of our preoccupation with Christmas & New Year’s.
It is definitely a Song Of The Season.
Then, since I had mentioned the music for What Child Is This is from Greensleeves, I thought I would prove it with a beautiful solo guitar instrumental from John Fahey.
Finally, we will get to the featured artist, Eric Andersen.
He is one of the true Poets of our music, dating back to the early 60’s. And in danger of being forgotten like so many others.
We will begin appropriately with the FIRST song I ever heard by him back in 1967- thanks to my musical muse, the legendary Scott Muni.
And end the chapter with a great kiss-off song. That’s all we guys have is kiss-off songs.
Other than that we get our hearts broken and our asses kicked.
I really hope you like this Eric Andersen fellow. There may be a lot more coming.
I am not sure when I will be able to put the next show up, as I am going away.
If I don’t get another chance- HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Thanks everybody, you have made 2006 a lot of fun for me.

Pancake Wednesday. Did you happen to see last Wednesday’s New York Times, internet version? It carried video of some old guy giving lessons on the art of flapjackerie. Only, he called it “making pancakes”. He did a great job, but it’s sad. When the world is going to hell in a peach basket, the Times is stealing my ideas for their internet’s front page.
Okay, it’s not a new idea but sheesh! Oh, well, if that’s my greatest gripe today, big deal! Eat more! You’re gonna need it! Enjoy the crisp bacon and the tunage!

Tuesday after Christmas Day. Ahhh. New pants and a hat. Hats are important in the podcast production. Oh, yes, props are essential to the attitude of the podcaster. I’d rather shower naked than podcast without a hat! Could it be too much eggnog or an OD of Dark Chocolate? We’ll see, meanwhile check out the great music and the long distance dedication of the closing song, to one in a dark, cold, snowy place in the sandbox. God be with all our men and women doing the hard work there. Home soon!

THE ROCKOLLECTIONS CHRISTMAS PARTY PT.3

This time I will open with Bach, Cantata 147- but made into In The Quiet Of Christmas Morning by the Moody Blues.
Then we’ll hear the combo of Barenaked Ladies and Sarah Mac Lachlan, as they, like Simon & Garfunkel, for some reason refuse to call God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by its actual name. But a real fine version nonetheless.
Then we deal with the matter of Christmas standards, and beyond that, DEFINITIVE versions of Christmas standards. And why would you want anything but the definitive one?
I’ll answer as best I can by demonstrating how an artist can insert his own particular personality into these songs, as well as regional and stylistic differences.
So I will play FIVE different, joyous versions of the same perennial- trust me, you will be entertained.
And we will close out this episode with the Beatles Christmas Message to their Fan Club member from 1966. This was an annual event for them, and this ‘66 one was the beginning of some real production values and acted out skits.
Hope your Holiday Season is going well- and please give a thought to those less fortunate, both financially or MOST important, with health problems.
Doesn’t matter how much is in your pocket if you are too sick to spend it!

THE ROCKOLLECTIONS CHRISTMAS PARTY PT.2

This episode begins with a not-knowing-the-mike-was-on cough and a case of the giggles.
We have a song by a New York State Congressman-elect and former lead singer of Orleans, John Hall. He’ll take us to A Quiet Place, where a needed child is born.
Leading into Bruce Cockburn’s wonderful Mary Had A Baby, with the angels all around him at the end. Those angels created a Thought Bubble.
Now, I have a former girlfriend named Angel, a sweet beautiful lady who isn’t feeling too well- so if anyone has an extra prayer, I would be grateful if they could shoot one her way.
So, dedicated to her, an ANGEL THEME set of music.
We’ll start with Johnny Cash, then hear from an angel who got his wings in the 1940’s, after that the OTHER hit from Bobby Helms that is NOT Jingle Bell Rock.
Continuing with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, after which we will come full circle with the ending of the delightful “Charlie Brown Christmas”.
The set was fun then, a little more meaningful now.
I do hope you enjoy this one.
Please click below to hear the show!

THE ROCKOLLECTIONS CHRISTMAS PARTY PT.1

Say, when DID it become wrong to wish someone a Merry Christmas?  Well, Pell don’t play that!
You are invited to the Rockollections Christmas Party, and this is Part One of I am not sure how many episodes. It is a party open to members of all faiths or no faith, and will contain songs new, traditional, and Christmas Carols. ALL INVITED, as this is an ecumenical get-together. Proof is in beginning with a Christmas Carol sung by two nice Jewish boys from Queens, New York.
Then we will Meet at Mary’s Place for the party proper.
Last year, I opened it with Mary’s Place by Bruce Springsteen- well here is where he got his idea for that song from. On to the GREAT Jingle Bell Rock from Bobby Helms.
Then a couple from my man Tom Paxton- one about the true story of Christmas, the other a lighthearted ditty. In that spirit of ecumenism, we will play an authentic Hannukah song from Peter, Paul & Mary.
Then the subject of a DRUNKEN Santa!
Engineer Ken accidentally reversed the two-song set, so we will hear Santa get busted for a DWI BEFORE he even goes drinking. Followed by the intended opener, which if you listen, mentions drinks, and boozes, many that are no longer with us (i.e. White Horse, Four Roses, Three Rivers, Old Crow, Wilson’s, White Swan, etc.)
Cheers!

The Longtown Sound
Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006
The following is adapted from Cloth for the Cradle from the Iona Community in Scotland. In the beginning, there was chaos. There were troubled dreams, uncertain sounds, and fear in the darkness. Then, when the chaos was most threatening, when uncertainty seemed the only certain thing, the cup seemed perpetually half empty, and the light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be just our imagination, God said, “Let there be light.” And there was Hope. Hope lifts our eyes and calls us forward in Advent. To our uncertain and timid world, it proclaims brazenly that there is a tomorrow. Hope reminds us that there is something to cling to… that God is and that He will always be.
Christmas blessings to each of you,

ROCKOLLECTIONS - REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN PT.2

Mike Pell's Rockollections - Remembering George and John Part 2
Well, today is the anniversary of John Lennon’s death.
While most were watching Monday Night Football, I remember I was watching a hockey game (it’s a BETTER game!) on TV with a buddy when the phone rang and another friend told me John was shot.
I quickly put the stereo on to WNEW-FM, then the best rock station in the world, and Vin Scelsa was playing Springsteen’s “Jungleland”.
My heart sank, I knew instinctively we had lost him!
In this episode, I decided to play songs ABOUT John- as a little cottage industry has sprung up regarding that. And as it turned out, I didn’t have enough time to even play what I brought with me.
I remarked that there was a great shortage of songs about George Harrison or his death. None really. Maybe that is because it didn’t come so suddenly and in such a violent fashion.
But with intentional irony, I mentioned even George had written a song for John, and of course we will open with that.
I think you will hear some very interesting things here. George Martin’s comments on John’s death. A Letter To John written and read by Paul McCartney at Lennon’s induction ceremony to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, and of course the song he wrote for John. An underrated song by Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead, that has never gotten any airplay, and includes John Lennon and others.
And the other usual surprises I hope you have come to expect.
Rest in peace, George and John. We are diminished by your absence.

ROCKOLLECTIONS - REMEMBERING GEORGE & JOHN PT.1

Mike Pell's Roclollections - Remembering George and John Pt. 1
As I note in the opening, this is that odd time where we are between the deaths of George Harrison, November 29, 2001 and John Lennon, December 8, 1980- two former Beatles.
If you had the unparalleled joy of growing up with the Beatles, as they grew with us, and watching them develop into the what I will always call the Greatest Group That Ever Existed, then you know the sadness and mourning the loss of those 2 lads brought us.
And still exists to this day.
Thankfully, that negative can never approach the joy and pure fun their music contributed to our lives.
They were on Mt. Olympus, and we all were all happily looking up to them, eager for their next album and lesson therein. The Beatles spoke to us individually, yet we were unified in our reverence for them. They changed the music for the better, and made us better in the process.
That is why the loss of any of the Fab Four will always be personal.
I can honestly say- no Beatles, then I don’t love music the way I do!
In my constant effort to bring a different angle to these shows, in Part One we will concentrate on George and his legal problems, using music to do so.
Beginning with, in my opinion, the unfair lawsuit brought against him for plagiarism, and continuing with all the suing going on over the Beatles breakup.
You will find that George had a biting, sarcastic wit that could be dead on- and very much in evidence in some of these songs.

We will take an entirely different look at John in Part Two.

It’s a new Wednesday, Hump Day for some, Pancake Day here in Longtown. Whether you like ‘em plain, buckwheat, buttermilk, non-dairy or (Heaven forbid) soy based, have at it. The Longtown Buffet, filled, flowing forth flipping flapjacks for folks formulating forays featuring foreign fruits forever from Falk Farm’s Finest. All syrup is, as always, on the house! Happy Flapjackerie! Imagine! Enjoy the meal and the tunage.
