ROCKOLLECTIONS - POST TURKEY LEFTOVERS PT.1
Thanksgiving has passed, and leftovers were something we either relished or got upchucking sick of. Here is Part One of a show unlike any I have ever done.
Due to the holiday, I was away. Returning, I realized I hadn’t put any thought into what I would do for the next radio show. So, LEFTOVERS!
I just grabbed a bunch of CD’s, records, tapes, etc. of songs I wanted to play and hadn’t ever found a time or a place for. I took a Personal Day- these were for me. Free-form radio at it’s true core.
When I headed to the station, the songs were all unrelated- with the exception of 2, two-song sets. But through some strange and wonderful radio coming together, there was a connecting flow that established itself in these next two episodes. See if you don’t agree.
We began with the way I was consciously risking the show could go- the commemorating of a Wreck, LOL! From there, a very Hip song by John Lee Hooker and some heavyweight friends. The BEST interpretation of Bob Dylan’s Farewell Angelina I have ever heard.
And a long and unforgettable song that had almost become forgettable- Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan with their Rock & Rollcall. It’ll take a few listens fully appreciate how good this song really is. And talk about your name-dropping…!

Yes, it’s hump day, or Pancake Day as I like to remember it. Blueberry stacks, butter and Log Cabin syrup. Not that pre-mix batter stuff, no-sir-ree-bob. All from scratch and baked on a griddle not a frying pan. Finding the right gal to cook these bad boys is a chore for some men. I have been blessed all my life withaccess to fine Southern women, experts at the Art of Flapjackerie. May it always be so, for me and thee.

I have been celebrating my birthday, or others have been, since Thanksgiving Day. My Mother will be 86 years old on the 29th of this month. I think if I have another 32 years ahead of me, I might as well go out on a limb and stage the first of three comebacks. I am planning a concert for mid March to bring back all that is “Shag”. It turned out to be a very sunny Thanksgiving Day in the South. Lots of cars lining the driveways of old folks homes today. I usually never see a soul or any kids playing in yards until Thanksgiving Day. Maybe everyday should be Thanksgiving? Nah, there wouldn’t be a rush to the malls for the “Early Bird” Chistmas shoppers. Probably best to have two days a year to see old friends and relatives. I can’t wait ’til Christmas to see ‘em all again. Hope everyone has plenty of turkey leftovers for sandwiches this weekend!

Forty three years since I took that bus ride home early from school, the leaves crackling under the wheels of the bus. Every thing moving in slow motion. Normal folks had their heads hung low, frowms and crying replaced the smiles and laughter. The President was shot, he’s dead! Suddenly the world was cold to a ten year old. A lonely place.Fast forward to independent artists on a cold bleak and bleary Wednesday and the music brightens the world view if only for thirty minutes. Join me, will you?

This is the start of a great new week full of folks, food,. fun, and festivs, lots of Guacamole salad?? What happened to that big turkey mighty and butter browned? I guess that passed with Grandma and the pressure cooker. Too bad, I still smell her in the kichen. Gone but not forgotten this day and every day of Thanksgiving week are all those who cannot be home or cannot go home. There are many reasons not to congregate and to keep maintaining walls from those we dearly love. Tear down those walls folks and say to one another. “I love you.”It’s the simplest thing to do and sometimes it’s the hardest, but the rewards are tremendous.Do it today. Show the love.
