My Tennessee Hills I had the chorus to this song for several years, but I just couldn’t write a verse that worked. One day I was looking at it and I thought, Oh, this is a George Jones song, why didn’t I see that before? So I wrote it like I imagined George Jones would have sung it - really truthful, from the heart, from my own life experience. And I fell in love with it, even though I’d only meant to write it for another singer. When I sang it for my partner, she said “Dolly would sound great on that!” So we contacted her, and management said — no way, she doesn’t have time. But Dolly told me she said to her business folks “Well, we’re going to have to make time, because this is a great song, and I want to sing on it!” I couldn’t have gotten a better compliment from a better writer or singer. I’ve lived in Tennessee longer than I’ve lived in any other state. I’ve lived in Nashville longer than I’ve lived in any other town. I’ve lived in this house longer than I’ve lived in any other house. Nashville’s been good to me. They took me in when no one wanted me. They didn’t mind that I hadn’t had a hit record in years. They welcomed me. I’m home here. And you can’t get more Tennessee than Dolly. She’s so intuitive and so smart. When we were in the studio, Dolly asked about the lines “When I’m down to my last witness, I’ll be going there”. To me, those are the key lines - when you’ve broken every vow you’ve made, and you’ve messed up everything you can possibly mess up, and you’re down to your last witness - that would be God in my book… that’s a powerful line. The next time Dolly sang it, she twisted the phrasing and it was just great. It brought the whole thing to life.
