ROCKOLLECTIONS: NEW YORK CITY SONGS PT.1

As we approach the 6th Anniversary of 9/11,
I will continue with a tradition I started on the first anniversary.
Playing songs about New York City- a celebration of my city, and mostly a sort of aural way of spitting in the eye of those responsible, and those fanatical nitwits who continue to love blowing things up!
For a far more serious musical look at 9/11, scroll down to last year’s 5th Anniversary four-part series.
I have to tell you, there are more songs about NYC than ANY other place on earth- nothing even comes close. And each year I find more and more.
Over the years, I have played some sets and songs I am really proud of.
This time, I will begin with a song that if you have spent any time in New York City in the last 25-30 years, was unavoidable.
Although I live in Brooklyn, I fully realize that when people think of New York, they visualize the borough of Manhattan.
A song for Manhattan, by the pairing of Rod Stewart & Bette Midler.
Then a great rocker for global tracking the location of our radio station.
While people come here from all over the world, there has always been a migration from the American South.
I’ll play two songs- one for a Southerner we made a good impression on, and the other a bad one.
We will close this first chapter out with a tune by Lucy Kaplansky, about what can make a girl feel like she is the prettiest in all of New York City- the guy she is with!
Coming up next, a march down the world’s most famous street.

Really enjoyed the program. What a great idea in recognition of 911. Great choice of songs ♥

    Gr8fulheart,
I am very glad you enjoyed the show.
As for the songs, I think back to all the ones I have played in the past 6 years and I am tempted to figure out a way to get them on here.
Part 2 coming very soon, with a theme within a theme.
Thank you for listening and especially for writing.
    I really appreciate it.
    Mike

Okay, so none of my songs made it on part 1…maybe part 2.

Mike, I’ve never heard a single song from that playlist, but I liked it. My favorite songs were:

Ian Hunter - Central Park and West (very catchy melody)

Buck Owens - Can’t remember the title, but I loved this song. Not because it was not favorable to New York, but because it’s Buck Owens. I’ve never owned any of his music, but that’s about to change. I remember watching him on Hee Haw with my Father. I think he has a song called “Act Naturally” that’s really killer, and I also dig the song he did with Dwight Yoakam called “The Streets Of Bakersfield”.

Lucy ? - Love Song New York (couldn’t manage to get her last name, but this is a great song.)

Nice idea and nice show Mike.

    Dear RJ,
Don’t be too hard on yourself, one of those songs you picked will be heard.
As for the other two, I have played them in the past- don’t forget, I have been doing the show for a long time but only on the internet since some time in 2006.
The Sinatra one is overplayed anyway.
As a musicologist, I try to bring people music they have never heard- although in a context where I try to grab their attention with a topic and mix it with songs they do know…maybe even with songs they forgot they knew, lol!
It doesn’t surprise me you hadn’t heard any in Part One.
I LOVE that solo Ian Hunter one- Central Park & West!
The Buck Owens one was called I Wouldn’t Live In New York City (If They Gave Me The Whole Dang Town).
As for Act Naturally, you should be ashamed of yourself, lol!
The BEATLES covered that song, sung by Ringo!
The one with Dwight Yoakum I am not sure I know.
It’s Lucy Kaplansky that did Love Song New York, and when she is not making her own albums, does backup vocals on just about every other folk artist’s albums.
Glad you liked it, and thanks for the listen.
Things didn’t work out tonight, and I was unable to get Part One of this year’s show up.
I am returning to the other job in the morning, after my vacation.
Really looking forward to that…yeah, LOL!
I’ll write more when I get time,
    Mike
