ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE SOUNDS OF PETS PT.1

Since I have been on vacation, a REAL traveling around vacation, not just one from radio like before, here’s an old show from 2006.
I did it for the 40th Anniversary of the Pet Sounds album, so add 4 years to everything I say, lol!
It was, and still is, a landmark album.
And it is commonly accepted as the challenge to the Beatles that resulted in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
That fact alone makes it worth a listen.
Plus, even before the Beatles, the Beach Boys (always underrated because of their Surf Music beginnings) had developed into a self-contained group- writing, producing, arranging, etc., their own music.
So, the first of two parts on a Classic Album.
An album you will hear me read about, comment on, and most importantly, play.
Frankly, I think I talked too much, lol!
Mike

Can anybody else hear this? I get nothing but static.
I can hear the show just fine, RJ.
Still static for you?
unc.
Dear RJ,
No problem for me either.
I can hear it fine.
Mike
G’mornin’ Mike!
It IS morning Unc.
I shall refrain from calling it good.
The results are not in yet, lol!
I have my doubts and think it will just remain morning until afternoon- an even more treacherous time- surpassed only by evening!
The bell can ring at any moment.
Mike
Still no luck for me. It says buffering, but I’m getting nothing. Must be a problem on my end. I’ll try again later here at work or I’ll try from home.
Dear RJ,
That happens to me sometimes…the buffering, and notrhing else.
Try logging off, or a restart.
That usually cleans things up and the show kicks in.
Mike
Okay, seems to be working now. I restarted, but we had a hiccup at work with a power surge, but it’s working now. Of course, it’s time for lunch, so I’ll listen after lunch.
Take me to lunch with you.
A side of Pell, lol!
Nice show Mike. Those are the first album cuts I’ve ever heard of The Beach Boys. I’m familiar with their hits, but nothing else. Of course that means “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” would be the only song that I’ve heard. The harmonies are exceptional, just like you pointed out.
I did read somewhere that Glen Campbell was in the band for a short time. Imagine how that may have changed his career as well as The Beach Boys career if he would have joined full time.
I also liked your little joke (head on shoulder).
And I really enjoyed the commentary on the replacement of the 45 single by the 33 LP as a work of art. By the time I was old enough to appreciate music, the album was the vehicle I used for exploration. Although my sister had a nice stack of 45’s (which I wish I still had today), I never gave them much attention.
Great show Mike.
Dear RJ,
No kidding.
That’s a shame.
Pet Sounds may be the best, but other great albums are:
Smiley Smile (1967)
Wild Honey (1967)
Friends (1968)
20/20 (1969)
Sunflower (1970)
Surf’s Up (1971)
Holland (1973)
15 Big Ones (1976)
Their harmonies are maybe…maybe…only second to the Mamas & Papas!
Glen Campbell did pretty well on his own, so as a member of the Beach Boys I don’t know.
Thank you my man, for getting that head on shoulder joke, lol!
Thank God for sharp people!
I have a huge stack of 45’s, and every now and then I dip into them.
Might even be playing one next week.
As always, thanks for listening & writing, and hope you enjoy the rest of the album,
Mike
