ROCKOLLECTIONS: TEACHERS PT.1

You know, Teachers have to go Back To School too.
I wonder how they feel about that?
Not as miserable as I was, I’ll bet, lol!
We will begin this musical look at Teachers with some words- funny words- from New York City’s own (the Bronx), and former NYC substitute teacher, Robert Klein.
Opening a very long set.
After that, well, there are Good Teachers and Bad Teachers- the ones we relate to are mostly fictional, we see them in movies or TV series.
The real GOOD ones toil anonymously, dedicated to their students, going well beyond the school day and their duties, and never getting much credit for it.
They should be celebrated.
As the true BAD teachers should be revealed.
How to do that, I leave to you.
I do music, and we begin our take on Good Teachers with a another comedian- whose standup routine was the idea for a television series.
To be continued…
Mike

Mike,
I’ve been humming “Welcome Back Kotter” to myself for a couple of days now. What a great theme song. I also have been remembering how much my friends and I loved that show in seventh grade. Each week the morning after Kotter aired, we’d more-or-less reenact the show at the bus stop and on the bus on the way to school.
Hey Guy, that humming may be because we are such big fans of woefully underappreciated John Sebastain.
The man could pull out a hook, couldn’t he?
What’s wrong with me?
I can’t remember ever reenacting any show, lol!
I must be strange.
Mike
What a great show. But I’m so disappointed in myself. Why did I guess Seinfeld? Only because you said stand-up that inspired a TV show. But if I had half a brain, I would have thought about the subject and certainly remembered a TV show named Welcome Back Kotter. I loved that show. I did not know that Kaplan’s stand-up routine inspired it. The bit with Horshack/Horse shit was hilarious. And the “up your nose” bit for the show was “up your nose with a rubber hose”. Great memories, and you’re correct, John Travolta (Vinnie Barbarino) was the only cast member who every really did anything else.
I loved the .38 Special and Jethro Tull songs. Those were great picks.
The big surprise for me was the Big Country song. The only song I remember by that band was actually called “Big Country” or “In A Big Country”, I’m not sure of the exact title. But “The Teacher” is a really good song that is totally new to me. Good call Mike.
Dear RJ,
Glad you liked it, Pt.2 will be here later.
Now don’t be too hard on yourself, Seinfeld was a good guess.
It’s only looking backwards where Welcome Back Kotter seems easy to get- don’t be a Monday Morning Quarterback, lol!
And I will testify that you do in fact HAVE half a brain…and more, lol!
Yeah not much happened with that cast, particularly Gabe Kaplan- where the hell IS he?
I was really proud of the Jethro Tull, as I said on the show I hadn’t heard it in ages.
And I can vividly remember finding it, I was looking through my vinyl albums, and there it was, the Benefit album.
But what I played was from the CD.
In A Big Country was their big hit here in the States, and I am happy to introduce you to The Teacher.
I make the occasional good call, lol!
Thanks as always for writing, listeners like you guys make the show worth doing,
Mike
